The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill tells the stories of myriad hurts committed in the name of Christ and his church. Real pain inflicted on real people has consequences; and, for many in the Mars Hill community, the ripple effects have been long lasting. Individuals' spiritual trauma has born out in subsequent church relationships and even personal spiritual practices like Bible study and prayer.
In a culture enamored with therapeutic lingo, it can be hard to determine what true trauma is. Spend any time on social media, and you'll find claims of trauma and invocations against toxic people, especially those associated with the church. Exhorted by Scripture to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves," how can we discern this kind of abuse when we experience it? How can we create organizations that are hospitable to the hurting? And, what can we do to recover?
In this bonus episode of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, host Mike Cosper sits down with therapist Aundi Kolber to investigate the roots of spiritual trauma and chart a path forward after pain. Committed to an integrated view of humans as divine image bearers, Kolber explains the necessity of embodiment in our spiritual lives and offers practical tips for starting the process of repair after trauma.

One of the best I've heard on this topic. Full of nuances, discernment and also validation of walking through this dark valley. Words of wisdom. ❤

People don't get the trauma thing, I think. I had six sessions of Electroconvulsive therapy. The leads are peeled off of a plastic that has a unique smell like a type of saran wrap. If I smell this in the store I will be so terrified my leg will shake, I will have a panic attack I will not be able to read anything and I have to push through that without anyone knowing and use DBT to not go into a state of disassociation right there in the middle of the store. The ECT was not painful, and I was out the whole time, but my body remembers. This is traumatic. Something as benign as saran wrap can be traumatic.

I really dont like this episode. Running to Jesus, not to your own body’s signals is the answer. Focusing on Christ is where the healing is at.

She says in the episode that she believes our bodies are made in the image of God, and by the grace of God the body is designed to make you listen and treat it that way after you ignore its signals for too long and force it to store trauma like a mere sack of meat and bones. So under this worldview, running to your body's signals is putting you closer in tune to God. I wonder how many Christians are so focused on hearing that still small voice they don't even consider that chronic inflammation after surviving abuse could be God, through the body, trying to tell you something.

The only hope we have is the promise Jesus told us HE would keep us until the day of redemption,, Revelation 3:11 “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”

I literally have no idea what she’s saying. Added to that, she gives no scriptural justification for what she’s saying. I like the podcast overall, but I just can’t get behind this episode.

Glad I’m not the only one who thought so. I had to skip it, got tired of listening to her after about 5 minutes. Gave it an extra 5 minutes then just had to skip past this part.

I feel like she has good things to say but her delivery is so childish I can focus on the message.

In what ways do you feel her delivery is childish? She’s a grown woman speaking like an adult with another adult. Surely it’s not simply that you don’t like the tone of her voice. That itself would be an incredibly childish response: “ew! I don’t like that!”
