Your set-up looks so much more comfortable than mine! I have a relatively small vehicle and I like to move around, so I don't typically have any issues just staying at a pull-over. I still find it quite tricky to find good places though. Free Campsites has been my go-to, but I'm excited to try some of the others you mentioned now.

Hi, I use a cpap and got a battery set up from Jackery in California that includes a large battery and 2 solar panels. The battery can power my Air Curve for 3 nights. The battery takes 8 hours to recharge in full sun...it is not cheap, but in my opinion better than a generator...which I have but prefer not to use because of the noise.

After camping with a popup camper for years, I can be pretty frugal with my 22ft travel trailer. Part of any boon docking experience requires you to use resources sparingly. Personally, a generator is the best way to camp in the rough. You can charge your batteries in the day time and run on battery power at night. As far as snow camping, I pass on that. I require heat and plenty of it.
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 17 днів тому
We carry a generator as backup, but we hate the noise they make. The best investment we ever made was putting in solar and lithium batteries. We could go for days, if not weeks, without having to use the generator with those systems.

Hi just found your videos find them interesting especially since they are made in Canada. However, I did notice something I should warn you about. You were talking about tools you need and mentioned a bottle jack. They are good jacks but laying them on their side is bad. When that is done the fluid inside the jack gets at the seals it eats them away and causes the fluid to leak out making the jack useless especially when you need it. I know from experience. I had 2 from CT. and they both did the same thing So now I am careful and stand it up securely on its base , Just a heads up for you.
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam Рік тому
Thanks, I had no idea! Thankfully I have been storing our bottle jack upright in our truck utility box, but I'll be sure to check it every so often to make sure it's always up against something so it doesn't fall over. Appreciate the tip!

No issues with pipes freezing in the winter?
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 7 місяців тому
Great question. Our trailer is a four season camper with an enclosed underbelly. If temperatures are hovering around freezing we have not had the pipes freeze so long as we keep the heat on inside. We have been a bit nervous to try leaving water in the pipes when it's well below freezing, so we drain the system and use water from our jugs in those cases.

When you go to boondock on BLM, how do you make sure you actually land on BLM land with your phone mapping stuff? I'm not used to using a celll phone so I don't know how to do this... But when you go out of a cell coverage area, does your phone still be able to tell where you are on GPS so you don't go into a wrong area and get trespassed? How does this part work out? Thanks.
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 2 місяці тому
Honestly, it's best to map things out before you leave and then set points in your mapping app. For instance, I will scope things out on iOverlander.com, then use the Google Maps link to bring it up and investigate the area using satellite view. Then I set a star on Google Maps and download offline maps. iOverlander also has an app, and I'll use that sometimes, but I prefer having offline Google Maps that shows everything.

We've also found that we get a lot of sloshing with a full fresh water tank when taking S curves at speed. Do you find you have a similar issue or are we just doing it wrong?

How big is your fresh water tank?
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 2 роки тому
Hi, we have a 48 gallon fresh water tank, and then 30 gallon grey and 30 gallon black. With moderate usage, that lasts us 5 days, and if we're really conservative, we can stretch it out to a full week. Usually the grey capacity is what limits us since it's easy to carry more fresh water, but harder to find sani-stations near remote areas.
@raymondclark1785
@raymondclark1785 2 роки тому
We've got our fresh water conservation down pat. it's the black tank that limits our stays. What I need is a composting toilet with the pee going into the black tank

Explain to me how a large-displacement truck engine "leaves no trace." If you want to drag a small hotel everywhere, that's fine, but please don't pretend to care about the environment while doing it.
@HomeARoam
@HomeARoam 4 місяці тому
We do care a lot about the environment! 🌳 Leave no trace just means not leaving any garbage or disrupting the natural setting. But it's all relative, of course. In terms of our impact, we use _a lot_ less water and energy while we're on the road than just staying home. I imagine that helps offset the impact of the travel itself. And we're already planning to switch from a truck and trailer to a van, which will further reduce the travel impact.

Self righteous much? If you choose to Greta Thunburg your way through life using your electronic device to spout negative comments made from mined materials used for batteries and plastics made in chemical plants we will pretend to not laugh at your hypocrisy. They’re doing nothing wrong other than enjoying life and advocating the leave no trace philosophy which means they are responsible and care about the environment. Not everyone rides a bicycle and wears clothes they made from fig leaves and eats only tofu. Have the day you deserve.
