The new film "Maestro" tells the complicated love story between composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Bradley Cooper, the movie's star, co-writer, producer and director, about playing one of the most charismatic and controversial musical figures of the 20th century. He also talks with Bernstein's children (Jamie Bernstein, Nina Bernstein Simmons, and Alexander Bernstein) about the life and legacy of their father being brought to the screen.

Bradley's quote about it took him 6 1/2 years of working on it for 6 minutes is priceless when they talk about if he conducted it in the movie. If people would only understand what all goes into creating art such as he has done.

Would you believe I met LB when I was a kid? My father was an IRS agent, assigned to review the taxes of soprano Eileen Farrell. We drove across the new Verrazano Bridge to Staten Island, and my father got down to business with Farrell’s policeman husband. She offered me a lemonade. My father was a classical/opera buff, so he was already thrilled. He heard someone tinkling on the piano in a nearby room. Miss Farrell noticed his interest and said, “Wanna meet Lenny? He’s in the music room.” My father almost fainted, and I get to brag that I met Farrell and Bernstein on the same day!

Clearly, you're a Wagner fan guessing & going by your handle. Thank you so much for sharing this fantastic story. I had the extremely good fortune to have had a few encounters with Bernstein. At the time, I had no idea how they would impact my life in ways I could never have predicted. My 1st encounter was as a scholarship student at Tanglewood, the summer home of The Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a soprano, I had no classes with Bernstein, who taught conducting. However, one day, in the middle of a masterclass with Phyllis Curtain, our teacher, in wafted LB with a cloud of men trailing behind him. At some point, he walked upbto the piano, asked the pianist to move over, and he began coaching me on a Mozart lieder (of which there are very few). I was mortified, shaking in my boots but within seconds, he not only put me at ease, removing all fear and self consciousness, he coaxed a sound out of me that I had never heard mysrlf make, which I actually didn't have yet. It would take years before that sound would be mine. The downside of that and many other mind-blowing experiences I had the two summers I spent training there is that it would take years before I would grow into the status of working with great conductors. After Bernstein, the conductors on the level at which I made my career entry paled and horribly disappointed, not only lacking talent but also lacking zest and enthusiasm for music. After a 40 year career, unfortunately, I can count on one hand the conductors I worked with who came close to the magic and genius I experienced that one summer afternoon with LB ( although we students sang in the choir at Tanglewood so we got to see many great conductors in action). Th second encounter happened after moving to NYC from Boston to begin my career. A friend & colleague invited me to go with her to Jessye Norman's dressing room at Carnegie Hall after a performance. She welcomed us as young singers and invited us into her dressing room. At some point, a knock on an adjoining door and in walked LB. There he was with a serious tan and silver gleaming hair dressed in a beautiful multicolored dressing gown. Ms. Norman towering over him turned to us to introduce us, and to my utter astonishment, he remembered me and inquired into my career progress. I met many other world famous artists as a student the two summers and was crestfallen to realize that very few reach the pentacle of the business where true magic is made. Although, I became a solid, working international opera/oratorio/concert singer with a respectable and for some, enviable career singing on many international opera and concert stages, nothing ever quite topped those formidable years walking the halls (or rather grounds) with and learning from the giants of my profession. From what I've seen from the trailer snippets, Cooper has channeled this giant of a man to near perfection.

I am a huge fan of LB. I love his genius, his range is jaw dropping from the hardest to interpret classic orchestral scores crossing over to popular Broadway - though Broadway with an intellectual and very profound twist. Candide, which I’ve seen 5 productions of, was an imperfectly structured piece until Scottish Opera revived it in the 1980s, LB went to Glasgow and worked on it yet again and it finally blossomed into a marvel. I saw it immediately it transferred to London’s Old Vic. You can hear the musical shadow of both Mozart and West Side Story in it. Make Our Garden Grow is the most thrilling anthem. All true geniuses are hard to live with, but here his children effortlessly project their admiration, appreciation and pure love for their father (and mother).

I was privileged to have worked with Bernstein as a young person in the mid 1980s. Both of Bernstein's orchestral concerts in which I performed were formative events for me, yet I went on to perform with other great orchestras and soloists for 30 years, and although I was grateful for those Bernstein experiences, I didn't think much about them as the decades flew by. However, the Bradley Cooper film bits I've seen in various trailers and here in this feature segment have affected me deeply and have helped me realize now that my personal musical experiences as a young musician with Bernstein were only a part of what "Lenny" gave to me. With waves of emotion crashing over me, having seen these few moments of Bradley Cooper's uncanny performance, I now understand that Bernstein's influence on me began much earlier, with my mother's LP collection, and with all the televised performances and interviews I saw on PBS growing up. His Harvard Lectures, broadcast in the early 1970s---far too early for me to have understood 1/100th of what he was communicating when I was 10 or 12 years old---did finally seep in as I watched and re-watched them. I now realize that Bernstein gave me a great part of my musical identity as a performing "American" musician. I can't wait to see this film. I thank Bradley Cooper from the bottom of my heart for awakening my latent appreciation of Leonard Bernstein.

Can't wait to see this movie. Went to his anniversary conducting concert at Carnegie and as we provided the 9' Baldwin and I managed the NYC stores - my mom and I attended and went back stage afterwards and my mom told Lenny - "I was exhausted watching you conduct" (he did so much direction with his shoulders) - Lenny replied to my mom that No - you should feel energized! A treat of a night, especially when who should sit next to us for the performance was but Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger. As vivid as if it happened last night!

Leonard Bernstein was a camp counselor at my camp in the 1940's, Camp Onota in the Berkshires.

The A Star Is Born remake was unnecessary but this looks great (I went to Leonard's public memorial Xmas '90). This might get Cooper his Oscar (Mulligan overdue). Can't wait!

If “90 percent of people” we meet on the street have never heard of Leonard Bernstein, then shame on them, and shame on our society that they don’t know who he was. Really. Can’t wait to see the movie!

We used to have a Cincinnati talk show host with a 90 minute live show,Ruth Lyons. Ruth would be so proud when Leonard Bernstein and Carol Channing came to town. Ruth would always have them stay at her home. She love the both of them. Now I grant you they never stayed at the same time, Ruth always made them feel welcome.
