@nvgboiyes63864 місяці тому
Actually in the wild they can live to be 100+
@blahfasel20003 місяці тому
@@nvgboiyes6386 That would be an extreme outlier. Generally they're believed to live about 45-50 years. What's interesting though is that they don't really age like other animals do. The limiting factor to their lifespan is the moulting process. The bigger they get the more energy it takes, so eventually they reach a point where they die from exhaustion during a moult.

As an invertebrate owner, I am shockingly surprised at how similar Leon's molting process is to my tarantulas and scorpions. It's incredible to watch. I felt quite emotional watching this, too. The entire molting experience is just so incredible. It is truly remarkable that he had legs, claws, a body inside his body, like he is two lobsters in one (even more than two as he molted before and likely will molt again). Makes one wonder, how many Leons are in Leon? One of the most striking parts of the video to me was the comparison of the claws. It is incredible how the second claw "grew" but was a different claw. The teeth look exactly the same, as though it was the same claw growing. But it was an entirely different claw.

He seems to know that's why he becomes more aggressive. He knows he's very vulnerable. As to whether or not he feels fear like we do is unknown. He seems to be attached to his old self as well. Very interesting and fascinating to watch. I really love these videos.

It's definitely a relief when all is said and done. He molts because his insides are literally getting too big for his old exoskeleton. But at the same time, he knows he's vulnerable until his new carapace hardens.

Leon is The King of Coolness. Appeared to me, that in the minutes following the shedding of his old armor, he kept returning to it, as if he was paying it homage for it's time in service. This ol' gal is in awe, seeing such gratitude from a Lobster named Leon. He is a fine example to us lowly humans. Brady, the content of your videos is a topnotch, fascinating education. Thank You and Leon. I can’t bear to think about what it feels like for them being boiled alive 😢 I love to see Leon living a better life than the one he was destined for, on a plate. It’s been a great informative and close up look on a lobster so far and looking forward to many more. 😊

I've always been vegetarian (well since my mom read me Charlotte's Web around 6 and then took me to Austria to her farming village!!). As a child growing up in New Orleans I remember when my family or neighbors would have "crawfish boils", I would always steel one or two and bring them to the levee and set them free. I think, without being preachy, Brady and Leon have probably saved many lobsters and maybe even other animals. Maybe even crueler then being boiled alive is being starved with claws tied together (imagine being starved with handcuffs) for weeks? months? Leon was probably broken and wishing for death when he was chosen from the tank and voila, he's a star of the internet, living the life, given treats regularly and getting better and better digs.

On a cooking show, they killed the lobster by inserting a knife in the opening behind its head just before putting it in the water, so it would appear that there's no real reason for throwing them in alive. There's also a theory that you have to put the lobster in headfirst because that'll destroy the brain before any pain sensation can actually reach the brain. Personally, I'll just pass and cheer for Leon.
