This video looks at a variety of ideas for how to make prototypes for playtesting your Board Game idea, and for pitching to publishers.

I'm a woodworker with a bunch of scrap wood so I went all out on the prototype. I'll make a lower quality prototype if I have to send one out, but it's really nice to test a more finished product.

_"I put this back on my shelf ─ I_ might _get back to it someday."_ This whole iterative process is something I find a lot of beginner designers struggle with: so many of my favourite designs have come from cannibalising other projects!

I've made mine using blank cards and blank tokens and printing with my regular home printer on label paper from office depot (like for your dice), that way I wouldn't have to have professional print or hand drawn. I really like the sleeves idea, because mine didn't work for backs (they would become distinguishable)

Thanks for letting me know. I was surprised to see that Zee hasn’t played it! Feels like something he might enjoy. But I think they gave it a fair representation. They are right that it’s very different to traditional trick-takers, and familiar trick taking players might need to adjust a little to get in the right headspace for it. I’m enjoying their list - but it’s a long video! - so I’ll have to watch the second half later! :)

First - I love the chandelier you can see in the mirror. Second - I really appreciate the perspective of "don't get attached to your art while you're still developing." I think my game is pretty well set, tonally, and I'm thinking about a second prototype to bring out the theme more, but I'm really trying to balance "express the theme of this theme-first game" with "don't get stuck making art assets when you know they're not going to last." Looking forward to exploring more of your videos!

Very interesting video! I'm working on a school project where I'm trying to create my first board game prototype. Since the project exposition will be online, would you recommend building a prototype in the Tabletop simulator? How long does it approximately take to build a prototype in the Tabletop simulator compared to a physical prototype?
@AdaminWales
@AdaminWales 3 роки тому
I’d say it takes about the same amount of time. Tabletop Simulator is a clunky programme - there are a lot of needlessly difficult aspects. Even laying out cards and producing them isn’t user-friendly. So it takes a while. But of course, you don’t have to cut anything out, or print anything - so you gain time there. And it is easier to make revisions to a digital boardgame than it is on cardboard/paper. But if you will be showing it digitally, TTS is a great solution for that.

Thanks Adam. How do you cut that mounting board? Guillotine Paper Cutter, some kind of knife, or something else?

I use a craft knife, with a metal ruler, on a cutting mat. All easy to purchase from a hobby/craft store.

@@AdaminWales Excellent. I just ordered a set with all of those, like a minute before seeing your reply :) I suppose one might consider a more expensive rotary cutter if the prototype involves large numbers of tiles, or you need to make multiple prototypes? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Adam. What's the name of the project shown on the table top simulator? It looks very vibrant. Did it ever get to market?
@AdaminWales
@AdaminWales 2 роки тому
Still working on it (and name is undecided). I haven't done much with it since the video, but I've picked it up again over the last couple of weeks. It's a co-design with Rob Fisher, and certainly the biggest game we've made. So we're taking our time to make sure it's really special before we pitch it around. Not sure if it will be ready to pitch this year or next :)

Do publishers normally do the art for you? I've heard of people hiring artists. Would someone still publish your game and keep good art?
@AdaminWales
@AdaminWales 3 роки тому
Publishers do the art in almost every case. If a designer commissions art in advance, that is most likely to put publishers off, because they want to put their own stamp on the game - and they know their market well. The game has to fit well with their brand, and their catalogue of games. That said, I do know of instances where designers have commissioned art - and publishers have kept that original art. So it can happen. But I would never risk it - the expense of hiring artists is high - and the rewards from game-design royalties are low. I wouldn't risk wasting my money on artwork which the publisher is likely to discard.

You mention you use CC art from the web. Do you have recommendations for specific website to find CC art/clipart?

Pexels, Unsplash, Pixabay, PikWizard game-icons.net/ Not sure if these all still exist. You can also filter a Google Image search to only show public domain art.

Random question, are those blank dice weighted or quite light? They look kind of ideal for a project I'm working on thanks

These videos have been so incredibly helpful. I have a question pertaining to prototyping: I am currently building the prototype for a board game and it has a deck component to it. I was wondering, how do you decide the number of cards to use and the ratios of each kind of card to integrate into the deck? I know it isn’t the same for every project, but I’m just having trouble figuring it out. Do you just create each card type and then divide the deck’s total number of cards by that number? Thank you!
@AdaminWales
@AdaminWales 3 роки тому
The approach I take is to think about the size of game I’m making, and compare to other published games. Decks of cards are a surprisingly expensive component for a publisher, so shouldn’t be massive if you can get away with less. It used to be said that you should go for a set number of cards because they were printed in sheets of certain quantities - but those days have largely gone. So I wouldn’t worry about specifics. For a small card game, I aim for fewer than 120 cards. For a big box game, I might include double that number - but only if genuinely required. It is nice to include some variety in a game, to increase replay value - so I like it if not every card is seen in every game. It’s also great if cards can be multi-use, but that doesn’t work for every game. For example, can the card backs be functional in some way? Repeated cards in a deck is fine (and reduces costs since artwork will be repeated too). But generally, it’s trial and error. I put together a deck, then test it. If it needs altering, I make the changes... and repeat that process over and over until I’m happy.
