Britain's Cheapest Boxster Project Part 2 - Fixing my First Porsche. In this episode Jonny Smith finally collects his bargain 2002 2.7 Boxster that cost £1900, takes it for an MoT and drives it over 200 miles home in biblical wind and rain. After that we document changing the troublesome (water damaged) body control module for a good used item on eBay, followed by a service and inspection. This 986 Boxster hasn't been crashed, stolen and painted, although it was owned by Alex Kerston, previously from @CarThrottle and now @AutoAlex.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
Hopefully this video goes to show that you can buy, diagnose and maintain/repair a real Porsche modern classic on a sensible budget.
Huge thanks to:
Birmingham Car Keys (birminghamcarkeys.co.uk/) for the alarm module fix
LaRose Porsche of Kent (laroseporsche.co.uk/) for servicing and inspection

Great to see you being able to enjoy the car properly without having to stress about all the previous issues. Out of interest for those considering a Boxster project, in part 3 you should give us a grand total spent on the car including the purchase price.

Yes but lets be honest, its such a stupid placement of a vital eletric component by Porsche in a place where water can get in and cant get out. Its a soft top convertible, it should be designed with an idea that water could get in. This module should absolutely be somewhere hidden under dash. I feel like if this was italian car and not a Porsche, people would meme the stupid design

Jonny, as an ex-Porsche technician, I have some valuable advice… if you have no proof that the IMS has been changed for an updated item, GET IT DONE YESTERDAY. There is no indication of it failing, it just goes, destroying the engine & therefore scrapping the car. You can do the clutch at the same time and the RMS (crankshaft seal) With frequent (max 5000 km) oil changes using 5W40 and with the cooling system up to scratch, I’ve seen many engines do more than 300.000km, if the IMS has been changed The M534 locking module gets soaked if the cowl drains are blocked, remove the covers in front of the windscreen, two minute job, clean out all the crap and unblock the drain holes on either side If you don’t do this the locking module will get drenched again, at the same time clean out the drains under the convertible flap, one on either side

There’s also an argument for not yanking it out though. Inspect it and if ok, flip the oil seal off to let fresh oil in and it should be good. That’s the route I’ve gone down before. Different strokes for different folks but yes, either way, the bearing should be looked at.
@arthurdardalis

Ive had my 987 3.2 S for about 3 years and it is a beautiful car. Ive had to do a couple of the common fixes (luckily no water ingress as the car was garaged most of its life and i regularly check the drain holes). The amount of 'look mummy a Porsche' comments i get when driving it is quite funny as that child was once me and I've always aspired to own something a bit nice but not bankrupting to buy or own. It fits that brief perfectly. There are always the naysayers, 'its not a 911', but frankly go and drive one and tell me its the poor relation. They are incredible.

The saga continues in a realistic tempo! This may be one of the few Porsches in my "somewhat fiscally responsible" range, and time and again I do think about doing exactly what you're doing. Hey Johnny, great vid! I ran a 997 for 9 years so I went through a few corroded parts. I'm sure none of this is news now but... Just in case: check your tandem oil pump cover, ignition coil heat shields, front condensers/radiators (shown in the vid), battery tray, bodywork behind front wheel. Also check your engine mounts (don't exactly corrode but go saggy), earth strap/power distribution/starter motor (if your starting is slow/weak when hot). Suspension components were duly eaten away every few years (I did 40k miles...), check your clutch life too. OEM exhaust boxes eventually crack and generally corrode as they are mild steel. It was a 997 and not a boxter but a lot of the drivetrain is built very similarly, most OEM suppliers are the same.

Great to see one come back to life. Been restoring my 996 which had water ingress in the same place (sunroof drains). Took 2 months to dry that carpet and sound proofing fully! Found the only way to do it fully was to remove it and dry in the house in the end. (First step was placing it on a folded towel and standing repeatedly on the carpet to drain the sound proofing, which holds on to water far too well!)

I love this series. Looks a great car and all the faults are the usual things that affect them. Looking forward to part 3. 😎 The rattle at start up was just the camchains flapping about until the tensioners pressurised. Sounds worse than it is and probably won’t do it when used regularly. If using it irregularly and bothered by it at cold starts, simply pull fuse C4 (fuel pump), crank engine until you see oil pressure on the gauge, reinsert fuse and start it. That’s what I do in my GT3, but only when it has stood for months over winter. 👍🏻

Hi Jonny, Great Video, I had a similar issue with my 2002 Boxter 3.2 S 20,000 miles. The rear clam shell drains were blocked (the shelf under the folding hood area) it has drain tubes which come out in the rear wheel arches, I had to blow them out with an air line as they were packed with dirt. If this problem is not fixed the water rises and goes over the clam shell and into the back of the floor area behind the seats and into the compartment under the passenger seat and trashes the alarm control module like what you have. Another Boxter tip of the day.

Great vid Jonny. As the owner of one of the 'half decent' 6-7k cars you mentioned, these are one of the most underrated cars around, great value now. Straightforward to work on, galvanised body, and engine noise over 4k has to be experienced. Party trick luggage space means road trips for two are a breeze (Black Forest next month). Only downside is its too lowbrow for Porsche owners club , too new for the older classics community, so sits in no-mans land somewhere in the middle....

A very entertaining video and look forward to Part 3. In so many cases I have found the placement of the ECU within the 'modern vehicle' to be less than optimal (an understatment) - and consider that in the Boxster's case the ECU location was a very poor decision effected by the Porsche engineers. In any case, the 'water-proof bagging' of the ECU is a solution that I would definitely adopt if I'm tempted to purchase a Boxster.

I want to say if you're using the shop vac for wet, you need to remove the filter because now the filter is going to degrade/mold haha.

Really enoyed that. I picked up a cheap 2.5 boxster not long ago and im enjoying going over it one small job at a time. I used to despise these boxsters never understood the attraction, but now I get it even the baby 2.5. They are just fun cars and so cheap now. I have a whine from the aux belt pulleys to sort next then its time for coilovers and bushings all round and getting the "new" wheels refurbished and on. Shouod probably do a starter motor too. I had a laugh when i heard yours make the same squeal as mine 😅

Had exactly the same leak in my wife’s Boxster. The seal material under the hood is very flimsy. It takes forever to dry out the carpet underlay, best taking the seats out so you can lift the carpet properly and get some air underneath. Ours took several weeks. Good luck, enjoy your show.

Hi Jonny, great video, Dean is a top guy, I buy loads of parts from Spyder Performance, great quality and value. You will probably need to do more than just wet vac the water out though, the foam insulation on the back of the carpet will hold literally litres of water, and probably in the front section of the carpet as well. Only solution is to remove the carpet section from the passenger side entirely and hang it up vertically to let all the water drain out (a greenhouse or polytunnel will speed this up). @@TheLateBrakeShow The carpet is one big piece in the cabin, but you can just remove the passenger side if you take out the centre console, the two halves can then be separated with some sneaky razor blade action on the join under the cubby box

Those aftermarket lower control arms on 986 / 996 usually suck. Often start causing that awful knocking / clunk over small bumps. One of the parts where OEM is likely best, can also use 997 components.
