Bacon is best baked in the oven. It cooks evenly and the edges don't curl much. But, you should loosely cover it, so it doesn't splatter all over the inside of your oven. I'll see your butter (which is a given) and raise you ...bacon grease! Oil or butter is fine in the batter, but cook your pancakes in bacon grease. Soooo good! She should also use a measuring scoop to put batter into the frying pan with. You'll get more consistent amounts and pancake sizes without trying too hard. I do like thinner-but-fluffy pancakes, so I also use the bottom of the thing to spread the batter out slightly if it's still too thick.

The American tradition is to put a pat of butter between each pancake in the stack and eat them in stacks of three or four. In my experience, the maple syrup is poured on the pancakes only. This American female prefers the bacon cooked until stiff but still red. If the bacon is black, you have overcooked it.

@cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449
@cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449 9 днів тому
Alivia looks like her Auntie. I think you did well - it's such a simple meal but there are a lot of moving parts and it takes a bit of practice to get it all coordinated. I used to hate making this meal, though we love it, when our son was hitting his teens. He could eat at least half a dozen pancakes, although he didn't eat eggs at all. (He loved scrambled eggs when he was a baby/toddler, and then suddenly one morning when he was about 2.5 he told me he didn't like eggs anymore. He said when he got big he would eat eggs. When he hit 6ft I asked just how big he'd have to get before he'd like eggs again. ;-) Anyway, til I made a tall stack for him and a short stack for the rest of us, I'd be exhausted, and they'd be finished before I ever got to sit and eat. I suggest you fry your eggs in the cast iron skillet. Ideally, I use a combination of of butter and oil to fry eggs. Your skillet is seasoned so nicely, it will do a great job on a fried egg. The pancakes will cook well in either skillet, but fried eggs are wonderful in cast iron. I've never cooked bacon that thick, so I don't have any great words of wisdom. We get our bacon from Cracker Barrel. It fries so crisply and doesn't burn easily. And it's delicious. We had bacon and eggs yesterday morning. Yum. My husband has been the primary cook for nearly 8 years now, and he's just getting to be able to fry an egg and flip it without breaking the yolks. I'm a paper crafter and I order from Temu about once a month, all kinds of bits and bobs. Paper doilies, ribbons, patterned paper, double sided tape, stamps and dies for my die cutting machine - you name it. It's always exciting when an orange bag shows up in the mailbox! BTW, "Temu" sounds so much more exotic in your accent than it does it my Pennsylvania accent! ;-) TEEmoo from me and "teamew" from you.

Find another pancake recipe. In addition to the baking powder you also need baking soda. American pancakes are also made with buttermilk. I also don't use cast iron pans for pancakes. Use a good nonstick and use less heat. They should be golden not almost burnt. You also used too much oil in the pan. Fry your eggs in the cast iron pan.
@DogwafflDan
@DogwafflDan 9 днів тому
When you mix the pancake batter, don't overmix. It only needs to be integrated. A few lumps are fine. Too much mixing will make them rubbery. And that was the best advice to use a non-stick pan or even an electric griddle. You can get 5 or 10 of them done at once. And instead of pouring from the mixing bowl, you can use your measuring cup or a ladle or something similar.

Some people are suggesting butter instead of oil to make the pancakes but if you do, you can't have the skillet up high or the butter will burn QUICKLY. I will suggest less oil and still a lower temp as that looked a little too hot and to use a measuring cup to measure out your batter so that you get nice evenly shaped pancakes. Wait until bubbles form before flipping but they did look fabulous! My egg suggestion is to get one started before you crack another in the pan to give you the space you need for flipping because the one will be done and can be removed before the other is ready to flip. Well done, Mrs. H but don't forget to season those eggs with a bit of salt and pepper.

All of that and no sugar in the pancakes please. We also tend to put a layer of butter between each pancake and use the bacon grease to cook the eggs in. I'm not a runny egg (sunny side up) kind of person, but others in my family use toast to eat with the runny egg, much like you all do with the egg soldier things. All of that for breakfast must mean it's a weekend. That's a lot to eat during the week. Good-O, Mrs. H and crew! 5/10 Wow! You're moving up on the Little H rating scale!

@@frances4309 Definitely need a bit of sugar in the batter. They're a bit flavorless without it. And since some people don't use syrup, you need a bit of sweetness. Pancakes, bacon and eggs doesn't mean "weekend" breakfast for us. We have that any day of the week, including for dinner because sometimes you just want breakfast for dinner. When cooking pancakes, you don't want to shallow or deep fry them. You only want to use a thick glaze of oil on your griddle or pan. I use a paper towel (or kitchen paper for you, I believe [smile]) that I fold and pour some oil into evenly, then after maybe 5 pancakes, apply again. Also, the 1st one NEVER comes out right. Having been raised in SC, our breakfast traditions are slightly different. I can recall many a church breakfast where we had pancakes (or waffles), eggs, bacon, grits, ham (with a gravy made from the ham drippings for putting on the grits), Hash browns, orange juice, coffee, and muffins/toast. Granted you don't eat like that every day, but the special occasion, holiday, or whatever was usually a good indicator that we were going to get one of these big breakfasts. If we went to the beach on vacation you could guarantee we were going to get fresh caught shrimp for the grits as well.

Buttermilk pancakes are very popular in the US. Good idea to crack the eggs into a small bowl first, that way if you get a stray piece of shell, you don't have to try to get it out of the hot oil in the pan, plus you can slide the egg into the pan instead of plopping it into the pan, reducing the chance of the yolk breaking. When you put the fried egg on top of the stack of pancakes, it's called a "Schooner." A "Short Stack" is two pancakes, a regular order is three pancakes.

Use butter to fry the pancakes - way better than vegetable oil! Flipping the eggs - grab the pan handle after you have slid the spatula under the egg,and in one movement, quickly raise the pan a couple feet,then lower while flipping the egg over. Get the timing of the movement correct,and the eggs will flip perfectly every time. Real maple syrup lovers never put butter on their pancakes - just the syrup,and sometimes cinnamon. Buckwheat pancakes are also great.

Typically, you just brush the surface of the pan with a stick of butter or a very light coating of cooking spray. It should almost be dry. When you cook the pancake, bubbles should rise to the surface and pop. Once they pop and there's a few small divots, you know it's ready to flip. Should be golden brown and perfect (even on the first pancake) every single time. ❤👍

Something to think about - I make my fried eggs with about a teaspoon of water in the pan and cover them so that the steam cooks the top of the eggs, so you don't have to worry about turning them. I eat the eggs atop slices of toast, which soaks all the runny yolk, just like my grandfather would do over 60 years ago. I know some people like syrup on their bacon or sausage, but I prefer the meats by themselves. And with the pancakes, plenty of butter and a ridiculous amount of maple syrup.

We always called those "basted" eggs & that's my favorite way of cooking -and eating - them. But if I'm in a hurry, sometimes I'll cook my eggs on the first side only, then add a teaspoon or tablespoon of water (depending on how many eggs I'm cooking) and put a lid on the pan - effectively gently steaming the top.

a little American advice; 1) Too much oil in the skillet , use a piece of parchment wadded up, smear it onto your oil or lard and smear it onto the skillet just enough to prevent sticking, 2) if you're going to make the bacon crispy, cut it thin and you eat it with your fingers.(it should crumble when you bite it) 3) Cut a pat of butter abd spread it onto your pancake while it's hot so it melts into the pancake and then add your syrup. This particular breakfast was from when America was mostly agricultural, The farmer ate breakfast before the sun came up, and would be doing heavy labor, The syrup is for quick calories, the pancake for carbs, and the fatty meat and eggs was for longer lasting energy because lunch was a long ways away and it would be lighter so as not to slow him down. It's actually not good for modern living people (too many calories)

A couple minor pointers about cooking the pancakes and eggs, Don't use oil for cooking either one. For the pancakes use a dry nonstick pan and flip the pancakes when the top starts to bubble. As for the eggs use a tablespoon of butter in a non-stick pan and cover the pan with a glass lid after you put the eggs in, watch through the lid until the top of the yolk turns pink, no need to flip.

I think you may prefer to use an electric griddle. It will most likely make it easier for you to deal with eggs. They're great for cooking many things for many people at the same time. We prefer Canadian maple syrup. Now that you have the batter down pat, you can take the next step up :D It's common to mix fresh or frozen blueberries in the batter. Another great is to take granny apples and slice into thin slices, cook in pan with cinnamon, butter & brown sugar. Only cook long enough to soften apples (3-5 minutes) Add some of the apples to batter and use majority of it as a topping. Cover that with syrup If you have good tasting sweet butter, a slice of that goes with all pancakes. You'd put that on top before anything to let it soften and melt.
@jackgilchrist
@jackgilchrist 8 днів тому
That's a *lot* of oil in the pan for cooking pancakes. I just barely grease the pan, and I cook most things with butter. Everything tastes better cooked in butter. I just use oil for higher heat stuff. Most people also melt butter on the pancakes before adding syrup or whatever. Also usually have toast to soak up the runny yolks. And often hash browns, sometimes with onions and bell peppers in them. Or I like to use leftover baked potatoes, dice them up and fry in butter till golden brown. Sometimes will put the eggs on the potatoes and mix it all up. Yummy. My Dad used to put eggs on his pancakes. Flipping eggs is just a skill learned from doing it a lot, and even then yolks occasionally get broken. It helps if you tilt the pan toward the spatula to slide it on, make sure the yolk is completely over the spatula, then do a fairly quick flip, but don't lift the egg too high when you flip it, or it'll hit the pan too hard and break.

The trick with perfect pancakes is that you want to flip when bubbles start to form on the top of it before you flip. They will be cooked perfectly throughout then. Most people like to put the perfect and smooth side up, I like to flip them up ugly side up because the bubbly side holds more butter and syrup. For a good sunny side up egg I always use the grease from the bacon mixed with butter, and you want to have enough so that you can just splash it over the top of the yolk to turn the membrane around it white. Not quite deep frying it, but kind of how people do a basted pan-fried steak.
@brandondavis5249
@brandondavis5249 7 днів тому
Although I make pancakes from scratch, most people I know just buy a mix where you add water or milk and an egg. If you let the pancake cook till bubbles start popping on the surface and staying open, it will be closer to set and easier to flip. It also means that the pancake is cooked all the way through. Some butter spread over the pan cake like you would on toast help keep the syrup from soaking through and turning your cakes mushy. Hope that helps.

Regarding the breakfast. I believe the pancake batter needs to be a little thinner. The batter should pour out smoother. They will also brown evenly on a smooth pan. And don’t forget a pat of butter smoothed on top of the pancakes (each one), before you put on the syrup. And don’t put the Maple syrup on the Bacon. One last thing, you absolutely need to have Hash Browns with the bacon and eggs. Eggs can be cooked anyway you like, but I think the best is either Sunny side up, like you did, or over easy. The Yolk will be runny, which you can mix some with the hash browns. Enjoy!!

Mrs. H, Some US pancake recipes also add about 2.5ml to 5ml of vanilla extract to the wet ingredients. Also, sometimes fruit, like berries are added to the batter. On the eggs, eggs "over easy' is a quite popular way eggs are prepared, for the American palette, fried until the whites firm, then flipped, without breaking the yolk (takes some practice), and fried for 30 seconds more. For "over medium" (not as popular), fry 2 minutes after flipping. For over hard (Best for breakfast sandwiches, like egg and sausage patty (sometimes with a slice of cheese, as well) on an toasted English muffin (Egg McMuffin at a US Mc Donalds)) break the yolk before flipping and cook side 2 for 3 to 4 minutes.

Just to educate you, Americans eat all kinds of things for breakfast. Most are commuting to work and grab a coffee or tea with a muffin or breakfast sandwich on the commute or they eat what they made at home when they get to work. Actually there is no typical American breakfast. On weekends, someone might make pancakes or waffles with or without bacon or sausage and eggs, or biscuits and gravy or fried potatoes (hash browns) with eggs and some kind of meat because they have the time. My mom use to make a big breakfast on Sundays. Americans live a fast pace life style so like everyone else, we grab and go through the week.

As an American I can say with confidence that everyone in the USA has a different take on an all American breakfast. It really depends on the region you were raised in. Being from California, fresh fruit, bacon and eggs or an omelette with toast and if we ate out, hashbrowns or home fries was the norm. My husband is from New Jersey and ate Taylor ham and egg on a bagel growing up. I'd never heatd of that before I met him. We moved to the South and biscuits and gravy are the norm with or without eggs. Meat and toast are not usually served with biscuits and gravy because of the biscuit and the sausage in the gravy provides the starch and the meat. Chicken and waffles, or a chicken biscuit are also popular when eating out. Rarely do people have pancakes or french toast with anything more than an egg or two and/or just bacon or sausage. We don't usually add hashbrowns or regular toast if we have pancakes or french toast (too much starch), Its usually one or the other. Most kids eat cereal for breakfast. Maybe with toast or an english muffin. Perhaps oatmeal if its cold. Few parents have time to fix a hot breakfast while getting kids ready for school and themselves ready for work.

The staples for an all-American breakfast are eggs, some kind of bread, sausage and/or bacon. Often included are hashbrowns and pancakes. From those basics, you also get regional variations as well. When this Southern girl visited California, for instance, I noticed they were REALLY into their fruits, breads, and jams. Go to a restaurant in Texas, your bread choices are between (white) toast and biscuits. In Cali I felt like a deer in headlights when they asked me what kind of bread I wanted with my toast. Meantime I'm sure most Californians wouldn't be smothering their plate with sausage gravy or eating grits.

Typically, you'd crack the egg into a separate bowl in case you get shell in it or if there is a spot on the egg yolk. You then whisk the egg, milk, melted butter, etc., together, then incorporate into the dry ingredients. It's extremely important to not over-mix your batter (which you'd almost certainly do if you add the egg straight into the flour), because lumpy pancake batter is fluffy batter. Over-mixed batter makes tough pancakes!
