Also to everyone being like "oh he's from Canada that's why he didn't understand how brutal we were to natives" I implore you to look into Canadian settlement history, we were significantly worse with the wars, our treatment, the way we took our landownership, how we integrated them after colonization and how long our wars went on time wise in comparison to how long America warred. It's insane, more native women dissappear and are murdered in Canada than black women in the US per capita to this day. We just hide it better, it's disgusting.

I also agree, whenever toast discusses about indigenous people, I realize that perhaps he doesn’t know that the same thing happened in Canada as well. Though, I think that it’s only “recently” that schools (elementary-highschool) began teaching indigenous perspectives in Canadian history and in general Canada acknowledging their mistakes in the past. But toast hasn’t been in school for a while and neither has he been in Canada. It kind of puts into perspective how many people in Canada don’t know the brutal history.

It's crazy to me that schools and people in general just ignore those parts of history on that continent. When I was in school in germany 10+ years ago we regularly learned about WW2, how it was wrong, why it became a thing, why we ought to never repeat the same mistakes our previous generations made. And it's a good thing that we learned about it. Meanwhile conservative american parents screech at the idea of teaching some subjects that handle racism.

Thank you for bringing up this topic about what is happening in the world rn. War is not something that media personalities are talking about now. Im your Russian subscriber and Im glad that you raised the topic about this. I was glad to hear your opinion upd: Toast asked what the Russian citizens thinks about what is happening now. Uhhh our government..... Recently, a law was passed that severely restricts our freedom. You can just get huge fines or a real prison term (recently a man was fined for making a comment on the Internet that does not support our troops, the fine is 40 thousand rubles. This is the whole salary of an average person. Some people, for example, get even less) People are beaten at peaceful rallies (girl who was detained recorded how she was beaten and mocked at the police station. Honestly, I couldnt even find the strength to listen to the full recording because it’s terrible) Almost the entire younger generation under the age of 25~ does not support the "military operation" that is happening now, but unfortunately there is also an adult generation that has grown up on propaganda (which is happening even now and I have seen many adults who simply DO NOT BELIEVE that people are dying in Ukraine). And those who try to tell the truth about what is happening are forcibly silenced. Personally, I feel completely depressed and I forgot how to live during these two weeks. People very dear to me live in Ukraine. I worry about each of them and their families. On February 24, we all woke up in a completely different world. Just imagine what its like to wake up from a shell explosion in your city or wake up and the first thing you see on the Internet its messenge from your friend "I heard three very loud explosions, Im scared" I want to believe that this whole nightmare will stop. I still can't accept that this is the reality I live in upd 2: Please dont write words of encouragement for me. If you have the time and energy, please support the Ukrainians (sorry, I will not write here how to support them, but you can go to twt and find information about it) I didnt write a comment to get support, I dont deserve it, because I was not affected in any way by what is happening It does not matter what nationality you are and where you live: be strong and healthy.

Michael has a great balance of being absolutely hilarious, with really silly humour and also being very knowledgeable about the war, cyber attacks, etc For a European perspective on the war, the way the media portrays it here in Scotland, is that the Russian government are placing extreme censors on Russian people, taking their phones to check messages, beating up peaceful protesters. The worst part I read so far about the attacks was the agreement between Russia and Ukraine to safely move civilians through a channel out of Ukraine cities, but then Russia reneged that and bombed the area! That story Brodin told of the media reporters being attacked is also shocking.

But also one sided, considering that you also have Ukrainian Militias killing civilians in fear of them being spies, news reporting about Russians bombing Schools and Hospitals but purposely left out information that Ukrainians were hiding military equipment in them. Man as a poli-sci and law grad I wish I could have talked on this podcast. I'll try not to type an essay here but I just wanted to address one point. Propaganda and Truth aren't mutually exclusive. The best propaganda is taking something true and just running with it. One thing to take into consideration is that one reason why there isn't as much of a "balanced" news is that Russia is intentionally trying to curb back information and news about the war. Remember, they are still presenting this as a "Special Military Operation" to the Russian population and large amounts of that population don't even know that there's a full-blown war going on. Ukrainian perspective news and content is rampant because they're trying to garner international aid.
@MrGykos
@MrGykos 2 роки тому
Isn't it also easier to create "propaganda" (read content if you wish) when it's actually true? I tried on purpose to search for the russian view and the r/russia subreddit was the best I could find. They rerun the same clips multiple times a day for days on end. They had a phase where they would create these crazy polls that all had the same response worded differently, for example there's no other choice but to agree to the war (special military operation). If they were right I feel it would be so much easier for them to put out content. The other side of propaganda I'm curious what people think is if ukraine is really winning or not. I mean sure, it's a win in itself that they lasted this long just with western equipment, no troops on ground. But are they really winning or will russia eventually capture their cities and this horrible story will end with a split ukraine?
@Cruxispal
@Cruxispal 2 роки тому
@@MrGykos I'm not a military expert but am a rather big fan of military history and content. From what I can gather: Russia still had the clear upper hand. Ukraine has been putting up stiffer resistance than anticipated and Russian blunders have slowed them down. But in the big picture, Russia still has overwhelming military firepower and numbers. All those destroyed Russian tanks and armored vehicles amount to something like 5% of what they have. Signficiant to be sure, but no where close to Ukrainian victory. To be clear, i think Russia will lose. But is it going to be a 10 year drawn out occupation dealing with insurgents type of loss or a quick negotiated loss is the big question.
@kiro9257
@kiro9257 2 роки тому
@@CruxispalI genuinely think Russia already lost on so many fronts. Like, their economy is clearly non-existent anymore, they've already lost more than 3,000+ troops (Dead, Injured, Defected, Captured, etc.) in just a span of a week, and EVEN IF they made a regime change (because that's what they're clearly aiming for) how can they maintain that regime? They need money, which they clearly don't have, and a full-blown Western-supported insurgency is not a thing the Russian Government wants to face. But, as you said, it's still to early to say, "Russia is losing" as they're clearly gaining ground. Overall, Russia may be successful in invading Ukraine but maintaining it is another factor.

@ReijoRitari
@ReijoRitari 2 роки тому
@@Cruxispal Russian military inventory is like 5-15% new stuff, rest are more likely made during Soviet Union and mainitance of those is shit as corruption runs rampant. So many trucks have problem with tyres as their walls break and lose air etc. Also they don't have airsuperiority and Ukranian steppes are now muddy mess that makes it near impossible to move around them with vehicles (tanks, acp's and trucks) as they sink in it and get stuck. As big fan of military history you should know this why it's bad for attacking. Also they are not able to suppily their troops because spreading too thin. Yet again one thing that happened in the past. Also their brave and extremely stupid usage of VDV troops dropping into Hostomel Airport, was quite similar to Operation Market Garden where troops in both endpoints (Hostomel and Arnheim) faced same fate.

Just an addition on Roanoke: When they came back they did indeed find the colony in ruins. The ship left the starter group there with enough supplies for like a year or so and that ship was suppose to return to an established colony with actual colonists and more supplies. The colony ship, however, was delayed several times. Twice by a storm and once by a government. So, the establishment colony ran out of supplies as it's backup was now like three years late. When the colony ship finally made it back to Roanoke, they did find the place in ruins. It's possible that the Spanish raided it. The colonists were thought lost so the colony ship went somewhere else because of the bad juju with regard to their original site. The first native population those colonists found (remember Roanoke was one of the first) had native american children with light brown hair and blue and green eyes. So, what happened to the colonists? It appears that it was raided most likely by Spain and possibly by a tribe of natives. The natives either took the females by force or the retreating colony willingly joined a native group. Since both of these scenarios happened multiple times during this period, it's super hard to know which happened in this instance. Fun fact: Columbus was imprisoned for a time for the atrocities he committed upon his return to Spain. One more fun fact: when the pilgrims landed at what we now call Plymouth Rock, the puritans met their first natives. That group of natives, much to the chagrin of the puritans, asked in perfect english: "Have you any beer or alcohol for trade?" (They also asked for coffee and tea.) EDIT AFTER WATCHING MORE: A person, with adequate housing, would survive on Mars for about 4-6 months. Without adequate shielding from radiation from the sun (Mars lacks an ozone layer and a magnetosphere) nothing we have right now would be thick enough or lite enough to send to the planet and give adequate shielding. Right now, the thought of sending something to mars to make oxygen isn't for people to breath. I mean it could be, yeah, but it wouldn't be. Right now, the idea is to send a machine to one of the areas with frozen CO2 and other gases defused into the surface, and pulling the O2 from that to create a fuel source to recharge the rocket for the return trip. No, Toast: the amount of hydrogen (and any gas for that matter) doesn't remain constant on the earth. Earth sloshes hundred of tones of oxygen, nitrogen, water, and hydrogen to space EVERY DAY. And because Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere, it doesn't hold much of an atmosphere. The water would be gone and the planet dry by days end.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) seems to be much more common in babies that lie on their stomachs for sleep. Once babies are consistently able to roll around from front to back and back to front on their own, they're no longer at increased risk and can sleep in any position.

@@cngotham4111 ngl if Earth is a tv show, the 21st century would be the most chaotic sequel, for example, the 19th century in a nutshell is just napoleonic wars, a bit of peace, two new countries unified, the Meiji reformation in Japan, European expansion in Asia and Africa and done. Then there's the 20th century, boom ww1, boom ww2, a long stalemate btwn two blocs, and a bit of peace at the end. But then here comes the 21st season of the show, boom SARS in Asia, boom the 2008 financial crisis, a ton of wildfires, the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, oh its 2014, russia first invaded crimea, then the 2018 Donbass wars, and late 2019 COVID, then now, 3 years later, Russia invaded Ukraine again, all these happened within 22 years

One of the funniest things I've seen during a guided tour was when the guide was talking about a building mentioning it was over 300 years old, and an American tourist asking what company it was built for back then. The guide looked confused at first and then with a wide grin told him that it's still the same company. Watching his mind get blown in real time was so much fun 😂
