If you’ve ever wanted to build an ultra-realistic high rise apartment building then this video is for you! I can’t imagine there’d be many people with such a desire… unless of course you’re a real estate mogul or a model railroader!
For more photos and information on this model as well as links to a lot of the 3D items used on this model you will find them here:
www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/...
I purchased this model from Custom Model Railroads in the US and I spent a good month putting it together.
It’s laser cut acrylic so all the part fit very precisely and there was very minimal sanding or gap filling required. The model is HO scale but the techniques I used to construct the model could easily be applied to just about any other scale.
A model building like this would look awesome on a model railroad although it will need a few friends beside it to make it blend in a little better and not look so lonely 😉 It’s only a 20 story building but in person it looks surprisingly big! Just imagine what a 90 or 100 story building would look like in HO scale!
The kit isn’t cheap but it sure looks good once it has been assembled and adding extra details just takes it to a whole new level. If you’re wanting to try building with acrylic and do know where to start I can definitely recommend the CMR kits.

Model New York City skyline coming soon? Imo, the mix between the ambient led's and detailed room led's looks alot more realistic from a modern standpoint. Not everyone buys the same type of lightbulb so it makes it seem as if there's a mix between incandecent and cfl bulbs in each unit. Mixed with your tape idea it would be very believable.
@LukeTowan
@LukeTowan 4 роки тому
yeah that is very true, I did think about leaving it as it was but in the end I made them to be a similar color. But yeah for a more modern building the variation would probably be good... heck, I've got two different colored bulbs in our lounge room! One in each light fixture...

Thoughts include: - Glass lookout box like the Sears Tower - Blinking red lights at the tip of the communications antennas which will inevitably be put on top - Helicopter landing pad, with appropriate blinking lights and helicopter with spinning rotors - Plaza at entrance of building, with manicured trees, flower boxes, a water feature/splash pad (with dog playing in water jets), flicks of pigeons, street musician, food truck? - Window washer platform dangling off the side You could cram so much stuff into this one!

Wow. I can see the time and effort taken to complete this building in the details. The number of pieces of furniture, wall decor, etc. plus all of the exterior detailing is incredible. You must be so satisfied with the result. :)

Here’s a quick tip: when using the applicator bottle, fill it 3/4 full and squeeze the bottle to remove the air. Then, tip the bottle over and slowly unsqueeze the bottle as you run it along the glue joint. This prevents the glue from flowing out too quickly and getting everywhere!

Thanks so much! 😊 Keeping it all organized certainly helps the build come together, there have been times where I've accidentally glued the wrong part in the wrong position, this helps avoid that 😃

Mind boggling stuff, at least for me anyway. The planning, the details, the precision.This is a great eduction in itself. Plus setting up the filming and the channel. (And flogging merchandise into the bargain!) An amazing range of skills. Very inspiring. Many thanks, Luke.

A good tip when working with WeldOn #3 and a needle tip bottle is, when upright, squeeze some air out of the bottle. That way when applying the solvent, when you release the bottle you draw in air. It helps to avoid little squirts, like what happens at 3:10 This is helpful to 1) avoid spills and 2) because if you're gluing clear acrylic, those random splashes will cause white spots.
