Building In Nature

День тому

In this series I build an off grid treehouse cabin in the forest. I build in a sustainable and ecological way in the wilderness and nature.
I’m Ruud. I am a designer and filmmaker from The Netherlands. I build and make things. This is the first episode of The Treehouse Experiment on my channel Building in Nature.
The treehouse is built in a big beautiful oak tree. In this episode I also make the tree connection. I feel the available solutions are expensive so I designed an affordable solution for a DIY treehouse TAB (Treehouse Attachment Bolt) and install it in the tree. This design has no negative impact on the health of the tree.
I hope you enjoy the building process! Have a nice day!

Outstanding 👏 I am so happy I stumbled upon your videos and channel, instant subscribe from me, I'm finishing my bachelor's in interior design and my final course work is on a third floor recording studio and a tree house platform that will connect to it for a nice view of Sofia, Bulgaria at the house of some very close friends, he's a musician and we built him a small stage for tiny concerts in his back yard, I really dream to actually build the tree house platform in the upcoming years but we'll most likely have to do it on a shoestring budget and I've been searching endlessly for diy attachment bolts, as the ready made ones are too expensive 😅 I'll keep watching the rest of your build and hopefully find more tips and inspiration, thank you for sharing your experience, it's very well filmed and presented ❤️

Ruud! This has been the best, most intriguing, fascinating, informative, descriptive, invigorating, motavating, exciting, detailed (and a few other adjectives) video on treehouses I have ever seen! Well done, super great job, looking forward to the end product but excellent work! Only one thing, you detailed your camera equipment, lol, but please add to the video the detail of the bolts, nuts, washers and other material you used. Thank You! p.s. you need to see about making a book on this, blows most of the Treehouse books away!

Too much compliments for me to handle haha. Thank you! A book also crossed my mind. Would be very cool! I did not add the specific bolts and nuts and metal info, because it is an experiment. So people can copy the idea if they like it, but should figure out/calculate/estimate the dimensions and strength of the connection points themselves. In the future I probably will make an more in depth video with more technical details and lessons learned. Thanks for the comment!

Impressive! Here's somebody who knows how to build *and* to film, equally educational and entertaining. UKposts at its best! I really like your bolt design and might use it myself. The only thing that's a bit dodgy are the pipe couplings made from cast metal. The material is probably brittle and the flanges are quite narrow compared to the beefy bolts. It will be easy to swap them out if they develop a crack at some point but maybe look into building something from flat bar?
@BuildingInNature
@BuildingInNature 4 місяці тому
Thank you for the kind words! :) It would be cool if you would try something similar! I think your are spot on. This is the weakest part of the design. This is also part of the experiment. I am keeping a close eye on it. But I think i am fine. To be safe I made the design in a way I can relatively easy reinforce or replace this part. There are a lot of factors at play. In my situation the tree is very thick and the bolts are installed not very high up in the tree so the movement of the tree is minimal (reduces also the change on metal fatigue). All the bolts are installed in one tree. Several trees moving around in high winds would create additional challenges/forces. And of course the load it needs to carry. Maybe these kind of technical details make a nice video for the future and also an update how the design holds up over time. Thanks for pointing this out!

Where did you find the threaded bolts of the size you used? It looks like maybe one and a quarter and one in a 3/8 in or? Also are your triangulated turnbuckle parts are they chain link fence couplings or what are they? Where did you find them? For my treehouse, I used commercial TABs, but I found adjustable form supports with 1-in threaded expansion rods. I think they will be strong enough, but like you, I can replace them if necessary. Mine cost 30 bucks a piece whereas the commercial ones are about 200 a piece.
@BuildingInNature
@BuildingInNature 3 місяці тому
Here in The Netherlands there are some shops you can buy them, also as a consumer. The size of the threaded bolt is m36. We have the metric system. The outside diameter is 36mm. 1.42 inches. For the turnbuckle part I used scaffolding tube clamps (with a swivel). They are also widely available here. 30 bucks is a nice find! It all depends on the total design, but as you say, 1 inch of steel is very strong. Great to hear you built a treehouse!!!Good job :)

@@BuildingInNature scaffold joints! Excellent. When I looked, the closest I could find was these: georgeroberts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/173-single-swivel.jpg If you wouldn't mind sending me a link to the ones you bought I'd be very grateful. Evidently you were able to find them in the same diameter as your threaded rod. Thanks so much! Mark
@BuildingInNature
@BuildingInNature 3 місяці тому
Mine are from the brand kee klamp. I could not find a link, your image looks precisely the same. But I think the brand is not that important. I put a piece of pipe (that matches the scaffold joint) over the threaded rod. So the diameter matches. The threaded rod I used has a diameter of 36 mm and the pipe has a diameter of 42,4mm (standard size) with a wall thickness of 3.2mm . So the inner diameter fits the threaded rod exactly. If you decide for such an approach check the inside of the pipe, mine had some thick welding spots that I had to remove first...but not a big deal. :)

Thank you for watching! The method I use does not harm the tree. It is a researched and proven method. The tree grows around the big treehouse bolts like it does with its own branches. The design also has room for the tree to grow and expand. I hope I answered your question.
