Building a Hydraulic Lego Excavator

Building and testing a remote controlled hydraulic excavator with Lego. The excavator includes 6 motors controlled by a BuWizz 3.0 (a remote control and battery unit).
An electrical slip ring is used to connect the 2 track motors through the rotating turntable with the battery box. 2x CADA micro Motors are used to power the tracks. They are small, providing high torque, and having low RPM.
The turntable is moved by a Lego small angular motor for space reasons and because of the low RPM, which provides better control of the superstructure.
3x Lego Technic Powered Up Large motors drive one pump each. To make the small Peristaltic pumps, a Lego part had to be modified by drilling holes. The pump works with Regular Lego pneumatic hoses. It builds up a lot of pressure/vacuum, enough to operate hydraulic systems, and it works in both directions.
The Hydraulic cylinders are actually Lego pneumatic cylinders. They are not intended to be used with water as the metal parts could corrode. To avoid this, I used a mixture of windscreen wiper fluid and water. The system requires some air, as the 2 cylinder chambers are different in size and therefore require a different amount of water. Each pump powers its own independent circuit and, respectively, 1 excavator arm joint.
The PS4 Gamepad is connected to the BuWizz 3.0 Bluetooth Unit with an App called Brickcontroller2. The app allows the user to assign buttons of the gamepad to individual motors. The analog sticks of the gamepad resemble the 2 joysticks of a real excavator, adding more realism.
The design and proportions of my Lego digger resemble the CAT 390L, which is why it is in Lego minifigure scale.
The hydraulic system works without fluid by pumping air. However, the movement is not accurate and lacks power.
I made 3 custom parts that are 3D printed: a slip ring mount, a pump housing insert, and an excavator bucket. However, the excavator would function without these parts. The slip ring does not need to be mounted; the pump insert could be attached with sticky tape, and the Lego Bucket would still work despite being big. However, I greatly prefer using a custom shovel.

Hey just a recommendation from someone who works on this type of hydraulics everyday. The rod side of a cylinder has less volume than the piston side because when the cylinder is all the way open obviously the rod isnt inside of the cylinder so you may want to add a water tank with a breather to avoid excess pressure build up when all of the cylinders are sucked in or to avoid the pumps running dry when the cylinders are all the way out. Otherwise great job love to see it.

That pump is an ingenious construction, really compact for an RC function. You show that it works somewhat on air as well. Have you tried running this with compressed air? Could that possibly enhance its working without relying on water? I am thinking of adding an air pump that connects to all cycles through T splitters, and allows you to preload the system with compression. Wonder if that could work?

I've always wanted to know if LEGO pneumatics could be used with water! I've not only showed me they can but also showed how! Very impressive

It's just a glorified spoon. I love it. And seriously, using water makes perfect sense. air can be compressed, but water cannot. Good call, and good execution.

This reminds me of my first complex LEGO set which i got for myself cause i was bored out of my mind in Uni. I forget the specific number, but it was a dump truck. Spent months upgrading the air fittings with hydraulic mods using the peristaltic pumps from HP printers from back in the day. Fun! I think i might get another set to fabricobble, back then there was no 3D printing and the sky's the limit when you print stuff for your LEGO. \ That ramble aside, nice work, especially the slip ring mod, brilliant!

The pump design directly connected to the cylinder shouldn't work but it does due to small leaks i assume, because when the rod is moving into the cylinder, the volume of water leaving the bottom of the cylinder is greater than the volume available in the top because the rod takes away some volume.

Im telling you. its juat a matter of time before this man has an entire collection of these things, and starta actually building miniature stuff with them. like imagine if he actually excavated a portion of his backyard, dropped some water pipes in with a crane. covered it up and tamped it all down, and then began paving a road

Hi, and congratulations to that fantastic build! The only thing, that interests me most: how did you manage the difference in the available cylinder spaces? (because the "push-side" has more space than the "pull-side", due to the rod, that is going in and out...) - that means: if you fill the push-side first and reverse the pump for the pull in the cylinder, the water should be too much for the available space there, because one cylinder means here a closed system... The real excavators compensate that difference with an oil tank.
