I was with you all the way through this impressive build... until the drywall screws. T-nuts and machine screws are generally a much better way to go. Cap head machine screws have a very square shoulder that can prevent distortions of the basket. This will also allow for higher clamping pressure of the drive to the cabinet. Overall beautifully done!

I like these. Husband approved. Love the veneer. The looks are all business. I'm more inclined for a harder red stain. That's me, though. Automotive finish just doesn't look good in a living room. In the game room/theater room/man cave, automotive finish. Been really digging the DYI videos. I've been building speakers for a few decades. Automobile subs and door pods mostly. A few house speakers too. Dropped off the custom. Getting back into it, since newer technologies are getting cheaper. Thank you and all of the DYI content creators for reigniting the fires.

It looks like you did a fantastic job with the veneer. However, I would have opted to spray them with paint. Personally, I would like the look better and, in the future, if you wanted to change the color it would be easy enough to respray. Veneer on a rectangle enclosure that big looks vintage and some may prefer that. Good job and thanks for the video.

Yes go for it! I am running them with no center channel, as I'm running them on a 2.1 amp. If I were to run one, I would build this, oriented on its side, and split the vents. The horn is equal 90° coverage, so it would work out great.

Great video, and beautiful job on the speakers!! What made you go with these over the BTS15? Just curious as I'm going to be building some of toids speakers but strictly for home theater use. I haven't been able to listen to either model so i love hearing opinions of why people go with one over the other. Keep to the great videos!!
@DIYhyfy

The BTS15 are likely a great, if not better option. I have not heard them to compare however. I built these mostly for appearance reasons. I wanted a large horn speaker. The BTS may perform even better than these. He really likes the CD in the BTS. With that said, these sound great, so any improvement would mean an amazing sounding speaker.

Great video. Speakers look great. I too would have veneered, good call. I’m confused by the “port”. There is no “tube” or “chimney” behind the rectangular opening? How is that a tuning port and not just a hole in the baffle?
@DIYhyfy
@DIYhyfy Місяць тому
Hi, thanks for watching! So for the port question, yes it is a port on this case. Because it is tuned rather high, it so happens that the width of the baffle is the length of the port. In most cases where you see a "hole in a box" it is indeed a mistake by someone without an understanding of what a port is/does.

@DIYhyfy
@DIYhyfy 5 місяців тому
Veneer is really pretty simple. Yes it is intimidating, given the price of material. With that said, take your time. If you are nervous, try using the cold press method. Simply use wood glue spead evenly on both surface & clamp. Then take a blade, and cut leaving about 16th-32nd inch, and sand that off by hand. If you have any questions I didn't answer, just let me know.

Hey diyhyfy. Nice to meet you. Herd about you from toids channel, so everyone makes these jtr style speakers. Yes they will work great in a large room but i am thinking as a beginner speaker building what about a 7 inch or 8 inch version with a horn? I just recently had to cell my klipsch rf5’s and i had the beloved klipsch rc7 which i want to make myself which has a 1.75 compression driver and 4:57 duel 7” subs and its a 2.5 way crossover. I know i can make them better but i am having trouble choosing drivers and still learning. I was wondering what you or toids might recommend for drivers and how to match a 7” or 8” driver with a high output compression driver that says its about 105 spl 1 watt 1 meter. Thanks if you see this question and would love to see you guys build the klipsch rc7 and make it both a center then match vertical. I have a 15 x 12 room and the klipsch rp 160’s are just not doing the output like my rf’s and rc7 was.

Just curious... did you have (or have access to) any speakers that were "good" or at least in the same category as that $14K speaker? If you have any way to do so, how would you compare these to say the JBL L100 or the Klipsch Heresy IV? Really nice job! :) But in the last minutes of the video (it's really hard to see) it looks like one of the H250 horns is turned with the 60deg direction mounted sideways. The H250's are 60x90 horns, and for almost all applications except really complex beamsteering in systems 10-20x larger than this, you really want the 90deg spread sideways and the 60deg spread vertically... This does of course depend on exactly what you're trying to achieve with room interaction and so on, and I also might be totally wrong about what I see :) !!
@DIYhyfy

Nice build... A little constructive critique.. you shouldn't use water based sealers or paints on MDF ever... It causes the MDF to swell. You will get much better results using shellac. it also dries completely in minutes allowing for multiple coats to be applied very quickly. it seals the MDF and hardens the surface. Two coats of shellac with a light sanding in between..
