I would dig more then a foot for that drainage basin. Its really your only hope to stop from being flooded out after you take care of the run off from above. Filling with rocks is a great idea. Think about it as a storage area for the water to give it time to leach through the subsoil. This is a sick project hope will and jesse let you plan another trip out to finish it if you dont get it done in time

Im a landscaper. We call these french drains.. Dig them all the time. We dig about 3-4ft deep and 2-4" wide depending on the job. We line with soil fabric/ weed barrier and fill with cobble rock. Wrap the fabric around the rock at the top like a burrito then fill with a lil layer on top of that with cobble. It will prolong the life of the catch basin. Over time dirt will slowly fill up the areas between the rocks . it will still work without the fabric though just might not last as long

Good call!
@lukemarks9212 днів тому
For the steps just dig each one out individually. And place logs. Then use a smaller log attached to them going straight into the hill towards the next log. Then drill a hole and use a sledge hammer to pound one rebar pin into it. These are called deadmans. Even if you just laid logs and packed with rocks/dirt really well they should hold up for awhile. Cut the logs so you have to use a hammer or sledge to wedge them into the sides as you go up. Just some tips!
@lukemarks9212 днів тому
On second thought just laying the logs will be easiest and pack them in good. Then fill the step area with rock/mulch. Mulch might wash down over time but would still help absorb some moisture. Ideally getting gravel to fill the height of the log for each step with a lil gravel underneath the log as well. I feel like that would be ideal. Its hard getting gravel out there im sure so maybe a mixture of dirt/rocks/and mulch would do!

The steps shouldn’t be 12” tall a typical staircase has a rise of 7” per step. If its too tall you’ll trip going up and going down will be very uncomfortable as well. I would suggest cutting a log and jamming it into the side walls and then filling up to it instead of digging the steps out but thats just how i would do it. Good work so far!

Tomatoes and peppers will die if the temperature goes below 33°F. We love Will and we want his garden to succeed. We don’t want him to get discouraged when the tomatoes and peppers 🌶️ die.

Put the rabbit poop in the garden. Full of nitrogen great for tomatoes. Other note Im probably closer to your age (43). From one Dad to anotherjust want to say I’m sure you weren’t a perfect Dad but you must have done a great job with Will. He has such a good work ethic and head on his shoulders. Not common nowadays. Good Dads don’t get told they are very often so I just want you to know I can see and it shows to others. Have a great day ✌️

HOLES WILL WEAKEN THE WALLS. BE CAREFUL. Put more beams along the walls to reinforce. Things are going to change fast when a down pour happens. This cellar may actually flood and fill up.

I'd put a water collection barrel in the ground right at your entrance with a false floor, two drainage pipes for your trench/room. I'd add in a Grey water pit for the overflow. Dig it down so your room never floods
@jackjohn260212 днів тому
Put a roof and cellar door over that ramp. Try to make it water proof. I see that ramp flooding the room when it rains and snows
@cookedonion331511 днів тому
Just dig a cubicle out of the wall for a bed and put some planks down to make a barrier from the dirt !

Careful those back wheels on the bus could be coming down with that structure disturbance
@robertwalker148512 днів тому
You should've put the dirt around the bus. So you didn't have the windows up top, so it was all sealed And they need to get much finer. Fencing for their garden cause little animals can go through that fencing like quick and easy

This has been fun to watch . I dug a bunker like Will did in the side of a hill and once the wooden walls went up the rodents moved in big time . I would hear them scratching and chewing . At that point i was thinking next time I will build above ground after that or seal everything like a basement with concrete next time .. non the less it was a fun little hobbit hole for a couple of years. peace out and keep digging

What is the plan of action for sealing up the gaps between the bus and the ground? I've been curious about that since you got under the bus.
@specialkglass12 днів тому
I think each side will be different a mixture of natures Concrete logs some glass wine bottles, and possibly some recycled bong necks 👍
@ritomase8112 днів тому
@specialkglass that sounds pretty cool. Do the bong necks where the sun shines the best for a nice-looking kaleidoscope style art piece.
