I think the dichotomy of CoD is a fascinating one. It's mechanics are centered around you being a lone soldier on the battlefield. A single cog in the largest of machines, fighting to stop a tyrannical leader. CoD's 1-3 reflected this, but 4 was the tipping point of the series. The reason 4 is beloved by all is because it straddled the line. It depicted spec-ops warfare in a brilliant package, but was also enjoyable as a power trip. You can either feel disturbed by how disconnected you are from shooting up the soldiers during the AC-130 gunship mission, or you can turn your brain off and shoot at the bad men. For all I love CoD 1 and 2 (never was a big fan of 3), they were doomed from the start to never be mainstream. They depicted suppression on the battlefield in what I think is the most realistic way possible to do in a video game (realistic in the sense it still has to be fun), but the pacing never relented. It's so oppressive, it's genuinely exhausting, but I still love it for it's portrayal of war. CoD: MW2 was when the shit hit the fan, and CoD changed. Instead of walking the fine line that CoD4 did, it just ran over it, and when it fell down, grabbed the rope by their hands. You can enjoy it for what it is, but you truly have to turn your brain off. It became a power trip, not a depiction of war that honored those who served. The problem is, to those who served, it can be seen as an insult only at face value. Why do I say this? Because the game mechanics are still centered about being a lone soldier on the battlefield being suppressed, but making a valiant push now and then. They may have tacked on advanced movement and tried to do all they can to distance themselves from the WW2 games, but the fact of the matter is that the portrayal of a brutal battlefield is still there, it's just masked in glow-sticks and prosthetics.
