Can a beginner climb the tallest mountain in Zwift?
In celebration of reaching 100 subscribers, I attempt to climb the legendary Alpe Du Zwift, modelled after the famous Alpe Du Huez climb in France. 1144m of elevation gain, 12km, can I do it?
Thank you to all my subscribers! Let me know in the comments if there's any other Zwift challenges you want to see me attempt. Contact me: JMowerEnquiries@pm.me

Awesome job man. You inspired me to go do this ride today. It’s relentless but a great challenge. I have the Wahoo Kickr and added the Climb grade simulator recently. Not really worth the money but the change in geometry is at least a good distraction and reminds you when the gradient is changing.

Also good for changing position on saddle a bit to keep the butt a little less sore!

Solid effort mate. As a heavier rider myself who's done a few Alpine climbs irl, Alpe Du Zwift is a wall. Maybe a goal-time effort up Ven-Top? (A longer climb with even more elevation)

My goodness!!!! Bravo. This is without a doubt my new favorite cycling channel. Congrats on 100 subs. Mark my words. It’ll be 1k by end of the month. The fact that you set a goal an hit it is inspiring. ✊🏾✊🏾 As for setup it really depends on your budget. A decent used road bike and used Wahoo Kickr would be my recommendation. MOST IMPORTANT: Riding with a front suspension fork is eating up watts and efficiency. A lot… In all actuality, you completed that climb in about 87min.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm looking forward to making many more videos! I'll check the front suspension and see if I can lock it out.

Well done mate. I missed out on climbing the Alpe in my target of 1hr by 32secs one week, was gutted!! But did it again the next week and got under my target time, you've just got to be super consistent on your watt numbers all the way up. I did a negative split, half just under what I needed and then half just over. In terms of kit. I started with a wheel on trainer which was okay, but then upgraded to a direct drive (wheel off) trainer - Wahoo Kickr. It's so so much better. Way better feel and way quieter than wheel on. I also splashed out a bit and got the Kickr over the Kickr Core as you don't have to do a spin down as it auto-calibrates as you ride which is a really nice feature. I would also reccomend getting a 2nd hand road bike for your trainer as you asked (but not over an upgraded trainer first). It will put you in a better position for racing especially. Enjoy your Zwift journey, it's addictive! Been going 1 year now and still enjoying it.

Nice video and I love the fight and determination at the end. That said, on next go, don't make such a drastic shift in gearing when you want to push harder. Maybe move one or two gears but keep your rpm right in that same 80 - 90 range. You'll end up getting to the same higher wattage but it will feel far less like you are trying to push a mountain up the mountain. I honestly think you would've comfortably made it up under 90 minutes if you were less aggressive on the gear change in the final stretch. As to trainers, it comes down to budget really. I just started doing Zwift in December and went with the Stages SB20 - it's very nice and super quiet which would solve your neighbor problem but as a full integrated smart bike, its not light on the pocket book. If you're just looking for a quieter / better trainer, something like the Wahoo Kickr would be a solid get.

Great progress - keep it up 👍🏿 I hope you base your training on a polarized model to ensure you’re not burning out. Switching to a road bike will increase your watts drastically because of the different energy transfer in a more forward-leaning position.

Nice work there mate, impressive determination. Can't remember the last time I did the AdZ, but as a 100kg guy, like you it kicks my arse! Look forwards to seeing you smash it soon. Almost tempted to jump on and see what I can do now lol. As for trainers, I have gone from a Tacx Flux, to a Neo, to a NeoBike, and would recommend any of them. The Flux and Neo are both wheel off, and pretty damn quiet.

great job! Especially that sprint at the end. Don't know if I would ever have the power of doing that after cycling up the climb. Am a 108kg rider, my only ascent up the Alp de Zwift is just over 87 minutes. Never dipped below 195 watts, was riding the majority of it at just around 235 to 255 watts and sometimes standing and putting out 350-380 for shorter segments to vary it up a bit. A sufferfest I am not too keen on repeating. That being said I am planning on the Ven-Top...but not at any serious pace, just utilizing all my gears and pacing it up the climb. My setup is a Trek Domane SL5 2020 model on a direct drive trainer, Tacxs Neo S.

Great job! Congratulations! I haven't done that climb yet ... But over 30 years of cycling experience (including racing), and since november on zwift, too, I think I can see how efforts of other fellow cyclists are. You definitely need a different set-up. I'm using elite's direto xr combined with my vintage cannondale caad4 (about 1998) road bike (updated it with some tiagra 10 gears last year). The direto is not the most expensive, here in Switzerland about GBP 730 - it's a medium priced direct trainer. However, very accurate and well built (Italy!). If you only want to use a bike on the direto, try to get an "older" road bike and perhaps refurbish it (like I did), then you have actually a state of the art set-up at a reasonable price (and you of course could still ride it outdoors). Have fun and ride on! Oh, almost forgot: having a road bike, you of course can switch cassettes to your liking (i.e. I just swapped my 11-28 out , for a 11-34 because I'm going to be taking on those Pretzels on watopia which in the end include all major climbs ... just as in reality.)

Nice effort! Alpe du zwift is such a climb! The first time I did it I finished in 63 mins and was stoked to get so close to sub 60. (I’m a 17y/o, about 62kg) Two months later I went for it again and crushed my previous time finishing in 57:35. It’s funny because I’m very inexperienced to riding, the second time was practically balls out, but I credit my cardio from running as a high school runner for the success. I generally run 30-40mi week and use biking as cross training. But vice versa can be done too!

It’s nice to see a cycling UKpostsr who isn’t built like a pro racer. I’m slightly heavier than you and have just started riding on Zwift. Kudos to you! That was a great effort! As for the smarttrainer I can recomment the Wahoo kickr core. It has almost all the great elements of the high end version but it costs significantly less. In any case I would recommend a trainer, where you have direct contact to the chain via an installed cassette. It's just so much less noisy. Have fun and ride on!

Great Effort! Trainer: Wahoo Kickr Core and as for the bike: that kind of depends what riding you like to do when you are not riding indoors. A gravel bike might give your the most flexibility, but of course that depends on what kind of riding you like. Canyon Grizl, Van Rysel RCX or something similar comes to mind. Generally your can pick up solid bikes in 1k-2k budget region with Shimano 105 or equivalent groupsets.

Seeing you trying to get the finish and the seconds ticking away brought back some pretty intense memories of my first sub 1h ADZ, finished 59min58s and had to lay down for 5 mins. Would have been totally devasted missing it by such a small margin. A+ for effort. Keep at it and your next one will be a lot easier. If that can motivate you to keep those cranks turning, I started cycling 2y ago at 100kg, was a 2w/kg, now riding at 3.4w/kg at 81kg (44y old). Invest in a good smart trainer it's well worth it i think. Tacx Neo2T is awesome.

That last ramp (.6km) to the finish line seems to get longer and steeper every time for me too. Great video, great effort, well done. Regarding equipment, I use a Wahoo Kickr Core which replaces the rear wheel of my bike (Cervelo Aspero). The Kickr Core is very quiet, normal derailleur/chain noise is louder than the trainer itself. You'll need to check compatibility between your bike and the trainer whichever smart trainer option you choose though. Couple of other top-tips, I have three fans all plugged in to smart plugs (cheap on Amazon) so that I can quickly turn the fans on/off from my phone while riding. I always have a few headbands spare within reach from the bike so that I can switch out the soaked one mid ride rather than have sweat dripping on bike/floor. Ride on 👍
