Full story: www.ucd.ie/news/2013/04APR13/030413-Noam-Chomsky-awarded-UCD-Ulysses-Medal.html
One of the world's leading intellectuals and political activists, Professor Noam Chomsky has been awarded the UCD Ulysses Medal, the highest honour that University College Dublin can bestow.
The award was inaugurated in 2005, as part of the university's sesquicentennial celebrations, to highlight the 'creative brilliance' of UCD alumnus James Joyce. It is awarded to individuals whose work has made an outstanding global contribution.
Professor Chomsky was presented with the UCD Ulysses Medal by the President of UCD, Dr Hugh Brady, following a public lecture hosted by the UCD Philosophy Society and the UCD School of Philosophy at University College Dublin on Tuesday 02 April 2013.

The more you realize he manipulates people the more you realize he's a Marxist telling lies. Chomsky has always hidden in university, spouted anti-American, Anti-capitalism, subliminal-marxism lies. He's a linguist, but he's developed a cult following for kids who have yet to support themselves. His pablum sounds good for people who rather blame others for their situation that work to better theirs.

4:22 "Creativity and innovation.. largely in the public system.. ". aaaaalright. So public == god. Private == evil. And cherry picking at it. And yes.. for the "victim" way of viewing the world, which Chomsky advocates, advertising is the culprit. People is not capacitated to make their own choices given the widely available information they can compare any time they want.. No.. we need to create a system were "lying" is forbidden. Everything we say has to be 100% "scientifically accurate", and with the seal of approval of the government.

@inmundo6927 Рік тому
@@stretch8390 define "the truth". Yes. Im worried about that, because the truth (with imperfect information) depends largely on your point of view, experience, perspective, cultural background, chemical, biological background etc. So, putting restrictions to speech based on its level of "truthfulness"; is akin to denying freedom of speech altogether, and looks precisely like a tyranny. And, as science tells us, truth should not be determined beforehand by some outside authoritarian source of "rightfulness", but rather by the open discussion of all ideas.
@inmundo6927
@inmundo6927 Рік тому
@@stretch8390 _Freedom is indivisible. As soon as one starts to restrict it, one enters upon a decline on which it is difficult to stop_ _If one assigns to the government the task of making truth prevail in the advertising of perfumes and toothpaste, one cannot contest at the right to look after truth in the more important matters of religion, philosophy and social ideology_ _The idea that business propaganda can force the consumer to submit to the will of the advertisers is spurious, advertising can never succeed in supplanting better or cheaper goods, available and offered for sale_ advertising is part of the costs of production (no difference between production and sales costs, all costs of production are expended with the intention of increasing demand). If it really were devoted to undermining markets, it would defeat its own purpose. But, from a linguistic point of view, it sounds better to place a label on a word such as "Advertisement" and relate it to some apocalyptic, prophetic description of a cataclysmic event, as in "the end of capitalism", which is the kinda speech Chomsky excels at (remember guys, Trump was gonna drop the bomb... no more bomb talk since Biden in office.. Chavez was good, now he is a State Capitalist since Venezuela took a turn for the worse, etc. .).
@inmundo6927
@inmundo6927 Рік тому
@@stretch8390 lastly. Is is well known consumers can be irrational, which is why there are certain things where there should be a social consensus on how we deal with things, such as externalities like pollution, etc. But it does not give an entity beyond yourself, the right to decide for you what is "right", or "truthful" or "well intended", beyond what people around you can decide, when it comes to "portray an image" however way you choose, of whatever it is you want to advertise. Deciding for others how the advertising of your own property is supposed to be carried out, is not only insulting to the producer, but to the consumer. As though they couldn't know better what is best for themselves and the ones they care for. (Zappa puts it brilliantly in that court case, if you've ever seen it) . And if you care, those are the principles of democracy.

And how is Cuba doing now? Stagnation, human suppression, constant reliance on donations from Western countries. Chomsky is one of the main reasons why I still feel confident identifying as “left,” because the last few years haven’t made it easy- the world in general seems to have lost its mind, but the almost pathological obsession with Trump is one of the most disheartening things, because there’s so much else to focus on. Chomsky has the right idea, he more or less ignores him, rightly so since the real decisions are always made behind the scenes. On the other hand it’s impossible to identify with the “right,” since the issues championed by the left - racism, social justice, etc. - are still very much alive, despite how the debate has been hijacked. You could almost suspect certain forces are interested in associating leftist issues with as much venom and ugliness as possible in order to discredit them, while subtly moving it away from the rational and humanitarian position of a Chomsky or Zinn (not to mention MLK and others). There may not be any easy answers, and the likelihood of things getting less contentious in the near future may seem pretty distant. But it might be useful to remember Chomsky’s underlying optimism that he always emphasizes after his sometimes dire projections, and hold on to the principles we know to be true, however they may be challenged or misappropriated.

Capitalism is defined as being an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, especially as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth. That is exactly what we have. Capitalism doesn't need to be free-market or laissez-faire. Corporatism is compatible with Capitalism. There is something exceptionally wrong when Noam Chomsky says that economists couldn't predict the housing bubble thanks to their belief in market fundamentalism. Several economists (and even politicians) did predict the housing bubble and subprime mortgage crisis: Jim Rogers, Frank Shostak, Marc Faber, Gary North, Ron Paul and - perhaps the most famous - Peter Schiff. And those were Austrian School economists, which is perhaps the school of Economics that advocates most in favor of free market and economic freedom. Manipulation of interest rates by FED, the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae... Several government policies were actively encouraging over-investment in housing market. That is not free market by any standard.
@luiz918
@luiz918 4 роки тому
@skutch Blobaum Lobbying is just one of the aspects of corporativism. It only means that the State is using its power to favor a group of individuals at the expense of others. It is a problem stated both by left wing people like Noam Chomsky and by right wing people, especially libertarians. But the solution to that is vastly different: left wing believe that the powers of the State should be used to address these problems - more regulations and legislations, while some right wing believe that the State being too powerful is the very source of them. For instance, several policies adopted by banks are only possible by the existence of a Central Bank, like fractional reserve banking and its role as a lender of last resort. And several choices made by the state also backfire critically, like forcing banks to give loans to people with poor credit history or adopting negative interest rates - which is leading European banks to the brink of collapse. Bankruptcy is a natural part of Capitalism and it only means that production factors in an enterprise should be rearranged in another way. When the State doesn't allow that to happen, it only reinforces bad decision making and encourages more risk.

@syndoodlefs4791
@syndoodlefs4791 5 років тому
@@carlosfdz7807 It is typically written in their constitution, that there is a sort of crack down and prosecution of people who seek to use authority to oppress people in which ever form. Whether they hire workers or act racist or rob someone. Although historically the movements never became authoritarian but rather more anti-authoritarian as they continued to grow. Like in the CNT, there was a progressive push for womens equality, abolishion of money is some parts, and many other liberation movements that were able to sprout, increased worker control. The same could also be said for Rojava, which also is very different from the rest of the middle east, in which it is secular, treats people much better than other nations, no taxes, womens movement and participation. These genrally libertarian socialist societies tend to have a major flaw which is that they are always sprouted within war zones and power vaccums and tend to be crushed from the outside. But internally they function well.

As a student of society, I admire Noam for his open policy toward political intrigue and critical review. It is absolutely imperative that society begins to demand greater transparency regarding the political process itself. Capitalism works because it is very simple, and does not require special conditions, such as a higher education, or holding a particular policy toward "morality" and "ethical" concerns. The liability of profiteering entities is usually assuaged by sponsored groups especially being of, but not limited to, "big government". As an experimental physicist, It seems to me that society has been kept ignorant of "new energy technology" that would tend to free the working class from the total and complete "stranglehold" on the energy market being kept by the "central banking cartels" and the "military congressional industrial complex". This is not the proper venue to discuss technical details, however, please accept the possibility that greater science than society has been exposed to does indeed exist. And accept the possibility that banking industry and cooperative government has indeed operated highly successful programs of suppression.

Some interesting points. The economy as it exists today is not a free market based capitalist economy. Many products that we use today were created under the direction of the government for military use or for pure scientific research with no immediate expectation for a profit. Bell labs created hundreds of products like the transistor and UNIX under contract. Our economy is essentially is cartel driven, fascist type. In almost every area, 5 companies or less control 90 percent of the markets they sell products with government backing and subsidies. Through the tax code, subsidies and the military-industrial complex, the government has had a significant impact on the means of production since WWII on every sector of the economy. One salient point about the current state of affairs is that we are willingly ignoring the mistakes of the past a going full steam ahead for another disaster like an alcoholic who just got a new liver and goes right back to the bottle.

Since you "prefer" some over others.. this is along way off. First step is to coming to terms with the fact you dislike some people, and some people dislike you. Are you force to loving them? Well, taht is what you propose here.. despite all proofs to the contrary. How are you going to raise the problem when someone did not "reciprocate" your love as expected?? Ill tell you how, its called "Free association".. and its the system which currently imperates. Money is only a medium of exchange for all that love. But it makes it "accountable", so we dont run into such problems of ambiguity (when it comes to the "sharing of love".. a unit devoid of any means of measurement).

A lot of theory has been put through peer review, but if you think that anybody agrees on future impacts and degrees of warming we have caused or will cause, then you aren't reading much literature. The questions you have to ask about global warming are: 1.) How much warming will we cause? 2.) What are the impacts of such warming? 3.) What is the cost of these impacts? 4.) What is the cost of mitigation? There are very few scientists who say that global warming will be catastrophic (c)

With a poison, we know that it will be harmful and without benefit. The cost of not putting the poison in the water source is also legative because it requires less effort on your part. That is not so clear with CO2, and that is why those are the important questions. You put blanks for all of those questions which means you do not know the impacts. If you do not know the impacts, you can't say if they will be positive or negative. Therefore, there's no reason to say "stop emitting CO2."

I don't like our history but I love the fact that we study it. Etc. And to some extend we all do. Building a better life and assuring the survival of what we have build with our hard work will always be the preoccupation of people. One cannot change this. So the question is not if it should survive : fact is e want it to survive and we'll try to do it, so the question CAN IT SURVIVE is certainly interesting us. @Blue Traveller What has humour got to do with this! I have no wish to make an argument with you or be rude to you but your words show your ignorance! Please, do your research before what you consider to be humour! Have a nice day!

The free enterprise system that we currently enjoy is peppered with anomalies and problems. But there is no impediment to anyone setting up cooperatives or any other mutually beneficial business or other organization if that is your desire. If socialism becomes established freedom to operate in any other manner will disappear. Please be very wary of any revolutionary change. The simplest thing in the world is to 'mend it worse'.

How about a just Tax system? A real existing just tax system? Use the pot of money to foster innovation and enterprise, aswell as social safety net.

"Privilege implies exclusion from privilege, profit implies loss. If you and I exchange equal goods that is trade: neither of us profits and neither of us loses. But if we exchange unequal goods, one of us profits and the other loses. The determining function: Privilege. When 'A' meets 'B' in the marketplace, 'A' bargains from a position of privilege; hence, 'A' always profits and 'B' always loses. It is this that is threatened by…the repressed anarchist in each of us." -Robert Anton Wilson

"This is the classic hubris of the intellectual..." You're disagreement with him on multiple subjects, for which you are very likely far less well read than he is, combined with unsubstantiated sweeping statements reveals your ideological indoctrination and fanatical certainty. Maybe talk less and Learn more. Just a thought.

Agree. Humans have two ears & one mouth... We learn & understand more about this world we live in when we *Listen* twice as much as we talk. Read twice as much as we type & learn twice as much as we teach. #DemocratizeTheEnterprise #PowerToAllThePeople #KnowledgeIsPoweful

Perhaps torpedos hired by corporate big shots? Like those damn coughers sabotaging the audio the whole lecture through. Some paid to regurarily look down, mimic a lack of interest, and flash and beep their mobiles to draw the attention from the podium. And some to just cough out loud every now and then to distract people from fully taking in what's said...

Problem is the financial issue is fact happening past & present, if we can sort this then we can address the "end of days" problem after all the UN gave us 11 years before we cross the point of no return in 1989 but we danced through that 🤔

Chomsky is the developer, or co-developer, of the first computer language. The reason you are typing and we can read it is due to him. He has also developed many theories regarding the origin and evolution of language and grammar.

Every major problem is always someones Clever Solution that its founder is very excited about and very enthusiastic about executing! Each time someone finds a new very clever way of making very good money for themselves it always turns out to be a disaster when it becomes publicly accepted way of earning, which it always does.

"and the burden of highly dangerous and strenuous jobs to be shared among the populace" You are talking about central planning--such as using price controls in an attempt to bring about a certain desired outcome. Price controls have never worked. Miners get paid according to supply and demand. In order to attract workers to a dangerous job you need to offer them enough money. But something else also happens--as a society improves it develops better safety measures.

"Chomsky’s formula is straightforward: 1) quote a critic saying something supportive of one little piece of an argument you wish to make; 2) needle other critics with it; and 3) repeat ad infinitum until you weave an entire tapestry with this flimsy thread. It is a game that only a linguist of Chomsky’s calibre can master." -Sophal Ear, "Chomsky and the Khmer Rouge"
