im not sure if Derren is the first person to invent that, but I have heard of the exact question from different magicians/mentalists before. It's because an average person usually only thinks about three shapes which are square, circle, and triangle. He tells us not to think of a square and we end up disregarding squares and rectangles cuz they're four sided which leaves the triangle and circle left. As for the colors, it's just based on statistics of which colors people usually go for.

@@t.jdavids4491 i think he does, he's pretty open about his techniques and although i can't say i've cheecked but i'd be surprised if he's not written books. if you do a lot of research into psychology, and magic and the paranormal in general (avoid books confirming the supernatural though, look for spoiler books) you can learn for yourself, i've been involved with psychology in one way or the other since the 70's and most psychology books explain how people can "cold read" - appear to read minds but just read body language etc.

i always recommend "games people play" by eric berne, it's a psychology book but it gives great insight into people's behaviour and why they choose to do the things they do, it's a basic and easy way to get to understand psychology of human nature.

i haven't got as far in the video to know what the "thing" is but when i was at school we had callouses on the palms of our hands from swinging on the "monkey bars" in the playground and i could easily drive pins through them with no pain. i rarely get ill (i joke i take a placebo everyday) but when i stub my toe or get headaches i try to picture exactly where the pain originates, and exactly where in my brain it the hurt is, pain is totally imaginary, just electrical signals telling our brain we need to take action, so the more you try to work out where and what the pain is, the less it hurts. when we bark our shin we rub the shin because the nerves that carry pain signals to the brain work slower than the pleasure nerves, so we get pleasure from rubbing the shin before the messege "that hurt" gets to the brain. the universe is grey by the way, colour is ENTIRELY invented by the brain, as is sound.....

You know, I can't remember if it was the exact same, but yeah, circle in a square, perhaps mine was green circle inside a yellow square. And it was the "the first thing that comes to mind" thought too. I guess he's refined his methods and understanding over time though. Or perhaps he was just eluding to some kind of "majority principle". Maybe the majority of people think of that combination he mentioned and some of us are weird, lol
