12:26 Limitations, Recommendations & Conclusions
Polar just released a new heart rate tracking algorithm as part of the new sensor in the Grit X2 Pro & Vantage V3. This should provide better performance, especially for weight lifting and different types of interval training. By testing it systematically we will see if this new algorithm actually shows promise, so get ready for my initial testing of the hardware and firmware in these Polar Watches.
Okay, so for weight lifting I don’t see a substantial improvement in terms of heart rate tracking, and all the Polar Watches I tested are in more or less the same area. Even with the updated algorithm, many of the peaks in my heart rate are not detected by the Grid X2 Pro and Vantage V3. My overall testing of the new sensor and algorithm of Polar seems to indicate that, at least on me, there hasn’t been a major improvement. Again, Polar said that the sensor performed atypically bad on me compared to most people, so my results might be a fluke. So again, check out more reviews, but I still hope and expect this kind of data driven analysis is useful for you. Also, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do a test for running because of an injury, but I’ll add that in a future video. If you like the design and functionality of the Polar Grid X2 Pro or Vantage V3, I would recommend getting the Polar H10 ECG chest strap to go with it. That way you get very reliable heart rate tracking, and you don’t have to worry about the performance of the optical heart rate sensor in the watch. If you do decide to get a Polar Watch, a Whoop Strap, an Oura Ring, an Eight Sleep Pod 3, another device or anything at all on Amazon for that matter, even something as small as toilet paper, want to potentially save some money and at the same time support the channel, there are different affiliate and non-affiliate links in the description below that do not cost you any extra and some even provide discounts. Given that you watched this whole video on these Polar Watches, check out this video on the Garmin Forerunner 165, a watch I really liked, or this video on my top recommendations for sport and health tracking. Thank you so much for watching, and catch you in the next video!

Not specifically related to this video but great content! It is really intereating to see all the data! I've gone through some of your videos and it is interesting that Apple manages to get proper readings on all different categories and at the same time you have to put that data into different 3rd party apps. They should do something advanced like the Garmin connect so you have one place to manage all. Side question, by any chance do you know a good recommendation for how to measure heart rate during Jiu Jitsu training? I saw on google a lot of people use chest straps but at the same time with this kind of physical activity where you use your body weight and need to be as tight on the opponent as possible, I wonder won't that be really uncomfortable..

We need to make a decision to either buy or not the new Huawei Band 9. Now. It makes no sense to make a review of old bands as most bands are bought new.

same here, the new Polar's 'exilir' sensor is very bad. When you increase the running activity and push yourself to more than 160-165 beats, the hearts beats are all over the place. Really i cannot trust it. I think Polar is not listening to us. The problems is not only you, but is me, is the other guy, then the next one, and so on. They just have this new sensor, which maybe somehow, is more difficult to program, or it is not as good as the previous ones.

I tested the gps accuracy a few days ago for a week and it is really disappointing for a dual band frequency watch.. way off sometimes and it takes sometimes 5 minutes to have a fix 😮 and when he found satellites it is just more then 100m off from the place i am standing. And heart rate is definitely not their best. So i send it back to polar. Happy with my garmin epix pro 2nd gen ❤️ okay garmins optical heart rate is not the best too but apple watch has but their battery sucks just 1 or 2 days is too worse. So looked for something in between and garmin has just a little good of everything battery gps accuracy and pretty good heart rate ❤

Polar's suggestion that your wrist is the problem is nonsense. Especially when so many competing watches have no problem at all with your wrist. The problem is with Polar! Hey Rob! I've been following you for a while now and would like to use this comment to express my gratitude for your reviews. Really informative and fun to watch. (Personally, I would describe myself as a data geek). I am currently looking for a new chest strap and since I own a Garmin watch, I would like to purchase the chest strap from them (HRM Pro Plus). Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a dedicated review of this chest strap on your channel or a mention of it in one of your top picks ... Is there a specific reason for this? Personally, I would be very happy if you could test this chest strap and compare it against the H10 from Polar in the near future. It would also be great to evaluate the accuracy of the „manual lactate test“ that comes with the Garmin strap. Is there any way to reward you for your work? I've heard that when donating via superchat not that much of the money sent goes to the creator, so I'd like to "donate“ in another way. Have a nice evening and stay healthy! @nrgyu4508
@nrgyu4508 17 днів тому
@@TheQuantifiedScientist The SAME idea has popped up in my mind yesterday and I've being testing ;-) Inside of the wrist trying to position it on 3 ways to test : closer to the radial artery inside/up, closer to the ulnar artery inside/down, or in the middle between radial and ulnar (of course not reading those but just to visualise the position). You have to tighten more, and it's not comfortable when you work with the hand 'except if you type on your keyboard ;-) ) The accuracy is still not good, I've done some tests when I'm in rest, sitting, standing up, some steps etc....Something is really wrong with their FW/SW...when I'm sitting down at 58bmp...h10/v3 are at the same; standing up, h10 goes on 74bpm; the V3 goes down to 48bpm?! It makes me CRAZY. I sit down H10, goes immediately , of course, down to 67bpm; V3 goes up to 90bpm, while I'm already in my chair for 1min, needing 2-3min more to catch the real 67bpm as the h10 is...The WALKING is even worst, sometimes you can have H10 at 70bpm and the V3 at 110bpm; So changing Upside DOWN WILL NOT improve. On the right wrist position the problem is the algorithme. They gave to fire the product Manger! It really sucks as the FW/SW issue...try to walk up and down some stairs?! the sensor itself is able to found the real HR when it "locks" on it. But for example if it shows 60bmp, you want to start the session, and somehow it starts from 90bpm (instead of 60bpm that has been there 1s ago), yes it's possible that I don't know how, it will use the 90 as the reference, going up to 120 for the simple walk, so you'll be wrong for a while as you're on going...if you stop and it "locks" back on 60bpm as real (or as ecg shows), it will use 60 as the reference point and goes up to 70/80/90 max walking, not crazy 120 even 125bpm simple low pace walking...bravo Polar. they believe more IT engineer vs the sensor itself I suppose...

Hi Rob, I'm chronically ill and am looking for a device to accurately track my heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and sleep quality. The most important being heart rate. I am not active, but because of my condition almost anything can lead to an increase in heart rate and I need to be aware of it so I can take measures to calm down. I know you normally test the heart rate features based on some kind of activity like weight lifting and cycling, but what about just being at rest and then something like a video, movie, or conversation leading to increased heart rate? Would most of the devices you've reviewed be accurate in that way? I need it to be accurate in detecting spikes and rapid increases. I've watched all your Oura ring reviews but it seemed one of its weaknesses was heart rate tracking while taking part in activities. Do you know if it's accurate at tracking fluctuations for the circumstances I stated above? I don't want to wear a chest strap if possible, but I need accurate readings. I do not have an IPhone so those products won't work for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've been using Polar since forever. That "signal from my wrist is weak for this type of sensor" statement from Polar seems like, well, cope. You're basically a standard European male, in good fitness. Polar is a European corporation too. Who are they testing products on? Whose wrist are the watches made for? It doesn't make any sense. They are just further and further losing ground, and they also refuse to compensate with pricing. They sell products with a huge brand tax, basically, and riding on the eternal popularity of their cheststraps. Which, truth be told, are also quite deficient when it comes to longevity, are also overpriced (especially the softstrap for the H10). The rubber rings that are supposed to prevent sweat reaching the two contacts seem to be shrinking due to washing, soap, detergent, and some straps fail in 4-6 months. I wish Polar would just do the right thing and either properly innovate, or sell cheap. They belong below Coros IMO in pricing. I am not going to buy anything from them until they change, if I can help it.

Hi ! Good question. I actually don't know since I didn't check the sleep tracking yet, but that is a good point. For some trackers this is needed, but others (e.g. Oura) don't have this. I also think it is more often scores that need to be calibrated (e.g. sleep score) and not the actual staging. It might matter if the age and sex are put in correctly

@@TheQuantifiedScientist Hi, I've been asking myself the same question when I've see so poor results, willing to believe that they have anticipated this kind of scenarion, but sadly it's not the case. My V3 is as bad as the first hour...after 1 month now. The idea is so logical but I think that there are no many capable engineers in Polar anymore, if any...Nokia scenario. I know it from many companies cases...like in the life cycle. But for sure it will be done one day in some brands that invest in this research...Apple or Google might be in the future, or some start up with the young "genius" guy, enthusiasm engineer, before he moves to California...

I'm sorry Polar. Vantage 3 is very nice and with interesting features but it's also too expensive for this performance. I choose/prefer Garmin FR 255 or FR 165/265 with the amoled display. Low reliability of "European" sportwatches (even Amazfit Balance seems better).

Why so much focus on accuracy when everyone knows wrist HR simply cannot be that accurate? Polar has tonnes of articles on it and it’s there for reading. If you want reliable HR get a Polar H10 and any watch you like.

Um. So how do we know that Polar doesn't suck as much at chest straps as much as they suck at wrist watches? (Thereby, invalidating all the videos on this channel)?

Hello @TheQuantifiedScientist Can you please make a review on Forerunner 265 or 265s preferrably I saw your review of 965 and 165 and saw a good deviation between the two Wondering how 265s would perform as it is in my bucket list Thank you!

So Polar said its the customers fault and their product is perfect. Man I dont know how these companies can lie like that ? Every company says the same thing: our product is superb, premium and perfect and its your fault.

So I had them for 5 days and when every day it rose the number of steps by 600-700 just in the time I am drove 20 minutes in the car...or sat at the computer in the office (where the competition won't take a step at me, so with Polar it jumps by hundreds)...that's it completely outside .... Polar really disappointed me!!!!

Polar needs to get their sh!t together and, stop blaming bad algorithms on you, I guess apple Garmin and all the others in the top bracket could get it right on you but Polar couldn't, I am not buying that answer nor buying their product. I really wanted this grid x 2 Titan but I will NOT wear a watch plus chest strap, if Polar can't get the algorithm right on you when most others did, I don't want part till it's at least in the .9 range of accuracy or higher for all.
