Djokovic missed various tournaments as a consequence of his own choices, something he has always acknowledged and hasn't complained about (unlike his fans). Not really different than if he had been injured during those times. And, if nothing else, Carlos backed up the 'legitimacy' of his ranking with his Wimbledon victory.
