A bit late, sorry. But in terms of running games, no, all the keys used for contents encryption and the RSA public & private signing keys are different on retail and debug. Popping in a cart will either do absolutely nothing or give an error (unsure which one, I know on 3ds nothing happens). And opening the eshop will bring you to a dummy eshop used for developing addon contents or a dev portal thing depending on your setting System feature wise, pretty much everything is there. Things like receiving news in the news thing and signing into a Nintendo Account may not work (both don’t work on 3ds dev units, I wouldn’t be surprised if Switch is the same).

Personally, I use GameMaker and love it but given your history I think Unity might be better for you. I guess it is something you can easily try out though as Unity is free and the trial of GM should be enough to see if you want to continue with it.
@orangepixelgames
@orangepixelgames 5 років тому
Did you also try Unity? or just GM and stuck with it?
@BradleyChick
@BradleyChick 5 років тому
@@orangepixelgames I worked with Unity in an art production capacity very briefly but when I decided to try to make a game on my own GameMaker was more attractive as I wasn't a programmer. Moving from the Drag N Drop interface and migrating to the programming (or GML) was much easier for me than just diving in to Unity. As it stands now, I could see myself learning C# and adapting to Unity but I am very comfortable where I am with GameMaker. I mentioned it might be better for you just because it is more like normal programming whereas GameMaker GML requires you to learn things a bit differently.

Curious if you have thought about Monogame as a porting option. I don't know a ton about libGDX but Java -> C# is not that huge of a switch and you may be able to mostly just port the code over since libgdx and monogame are both sort of frameworks. idk just throwing it out there!

@orangepixelgames
@orangepixelgames 5 років тому
Some of them are still looking at "streaming" games as an option.. I don't really believe that will ever make it, but if it does, that probably keeps those markets more locked for smaller devs and games.
@artmanstudios7037
@artmanstudios7037 4 місяці тому
And well if they don't then you have the next best step and that is to create your own hardware and that's what we need the most at this point create your own hardware and or a company that dedicates itself to creating the hardware of your dream with all the features you want that are the same people who create the hardware for these big companies if we can get them to make our hardware then we can put our own games to those hardware and not have to rely on these companies and or big companies to do it for us or even give us a chance at least which is a mission impossible type of thing instead of just letting Them just upload it there we're just going to create a market for them it's no brainer! But they realize that doing so will create competition for them so this is why they don't let everybody in so easily only those that are really pushing it that already committed and won't give up until they actually which are the serious developers that they have.

*sigh* the simple answer is: Develop your game in Unity. Read more about it here. insights.dice.com/2017/01/16/develop-nintendo-switch/ This video doesn't answer the question, it's another one of many videos that I call "vent" videos - they purport to give you the answer to a problem that they themselves only just encountered, and are really just making the video to make themselves feel better, not because they actually have experience solving the issue.
@orangepixelgames
@orangepixelgames 3 роки тому
sigh.. the video is about a question people often ask ME (personally).. as in "hey pascal, can you release your games on the switch?" which is LITERALLY what I'm talking about in the video :) A little over a year later, my first Switch game is coming in September (without using Unity) and the next 3 games are already on the way to release in the months after. I've done videos on this process also on the channel, as I'm fairly open and direct about all the aspects of creating and releasing games on any platform.
@Domarius64

@@orangepixelgames *sigh* very well :) the title sounds like it's "you" as in, the viewer, as in, how to release your own game on the switch. But I see what you mean now. Congratulations on porting and releasing to the switch. I assume it's more work to cross platform from desktop to Nintendo Switch without Unity.
@orangepixelgames
@orangepixelgames 3 роки тому
@@Domarius64 ha :) well I guess that some read the topic and think about it in that way (never meant it like that tho) but in the first 2 or 3 minutes it IS explained .. oh well! and yeah porting wise it might be more work.. and at some point I should just stop using Java and move to monogame myself, but for now, this is a good solution (and we're porting games and submitting to nintendo at "1 game every 3 weeks" rate - so it's not slow)
@Domarius64
@Domarius64 3 роки тому
@@orangepixelgames I definitely missed that part of the intro, jumping the timeline around when sifting through multiple videos for the answer. Only way to address the issue is to re-word the title, if you get multiple people misinterpreting the meaning of the video, otherwise no big deal. Hi, I am also a passionate LibGDX dev. It is really fun / down to earth and I have to say that what kept me from moving to Unity beside that LibGDX does what I want very well is that Unity really abstracts you from the code. This kinds of remind me of what dreamweaver used to be to HTML code, or maybe this is the equivalent to becoming a Flash developer in 2010. Sounds good while it is surfing the popular trend and suddenly you find yourself locked into a proprietary platform. That said, have you made up your mind about making the jump? Do you think there is a future in LibGDX or is it bound to die so it is just a matter of time before you jump off the ship in your opinion? For example I saw that Apple is soon going to give up OpenGL support for its hardware in support of Metal. Would be great to have you thoughts on the library itself...
@orangepixelgames
@orangepixelgames 5 років тому
Haven't made up my mind yet.. for now LibGDX still works and will continue to work on at least 2 of my 3 main platforms (PC and Android) and I don't think Apple will kill OpenGL that quickly, since 99% of the apps on the app-store probably would need a rewrite.. so it might take 1 or 2 years to phase out opengl support, or not happen at all. Or perhaps some smart cookies will make Libgdx/MobiVM run on Metal instead of Opengl. At the worst case, I'm confident I could write another 3-4 games on this tech in the next couple of years.
