Today we're doing part two of our dissolving resin in acetone series, this time with epoxy resin. Will it dissolve in 24 hours, 7 days, a month?

You could try a high molar weight of acetic acid, we use that where I work to dissolve the resin used in manufacturing.

I keep my acetone and denatured alcohol in quart size cans with a pin hole poked through the lid. The hole is too small to allow much evaporation but you can always cover the hole with tape if that's a concern.

Good info Zac. I have been doing tumblers and believe me I have messed a few up. I would put some acetone and cover it up. Next day take the tumbler out and scrape the resin off. Turn the tumbler over and place it back and do the same thing. Didn’t dissolve it but made it workable to get off

It's amazing how much time you can squeeze into 7ish minutes. Heat and a scraper or wire brush works well for cleaning tools and such. Soaking is okay for recovering pen tubes, but turning the material off is much simpler. It does make epoxy easier to chew for, say, someone with bad teeth. I often cast both epoxy hard candies and chewables in a single batch just by soaking half of them overnight. 🍬🍭

Does anyone know if acetone will work on the hardened black crap they put on jewelry from stores like Michael's? The help is greatly appreciated!! 💚 Update: I just got acetone yesterday and let the jewelry pieces sit in it for a few hours and most of the epoxy immediately came right off! I'm so glad it actually is just epoxy and nothing else, saves me the hassle of trying to figure out what it is. 😅 Not all of it came off though so I'm letting it sit for a bit longer and later today the rest should come off.

Used this for potted electronics back in the 80's. One should take note of the container. Don't want it to dissolve or melt it during the process. A seal-able glass or metal container may be a better choice.

I did this test with a similar sized strip of polyester resin/fiberglass laminate a long time ago, in a glass jar of acetone in my garage. Checked on it daily, then weekly. Eventually forgot about it and found it maybe 15 years later during a move. As far as I could tell, the acetone didn't have any effect on the piece - wasn't even rubbery.

@@ZacHiggins I always love to see videos on the science behind the craft. Last weekend I had to remove the brass tube from a too-short resin blank without messing up the mother of pearl glued to the brass and encapsulated in resin, so I could glue in a longer brass tube for a full length pen. Pulled some knowledge from my years of DIY electronic PCB fabricating to etch the brass out of the blank, leaving everything else intact and stable. I'm still a little surprised it worked.. lol
