Yes, but this actually is unsafer. Because the metal cant work and absorb energy. Also, the speeds of those cars were much lower. Cars nowadays are so expensive and fragile because they are designed to save lifes and also becaus eof all the stuff we want in cars today. Sensors, electronics etc.

It takes about 70 meters for breaks to stop a car at a cruising speed. I don't think the force of those 70 meters can be significantly reduced by 1 meter of crushed metal. That is if the crash is frontal. If it's sideways... where does your logic go?

Here we can see the initial approach passive safety in cars. At the begining they tried to make cars strong, but all the kinetic energy transmited to occupant. Today, the idea is that cars deform and no residual energy transmit to occupant, because people's safety is more important than car's integrity

@@garikm24 Seat belts wont do much. A durable car only shifts all the energy of the impact to you, a seat belt would either break, cut you in half or severily injure in a car accident (depending on some factors of course)
