I was privileged to attend two lectures by Carl Sagan in Portland, Oregon. He was joined by Ann Druyan in the second one. He was asked on the day he died "how can she slap!?" and he answered with "billions and billions of fuck"... what a legend carl sagan is, the legacy of his existence surely will persist through space and time.

Why oh why do the God deniers insist that investigation and discovery, which is the basis of science, and is intrinsic to the human condition, is incompatible with the existence of God? And a second point: I am about 99.8% certain that the hunter gatherers he talks about, are much happier now with access to basic electricity and basic health. None of them would go back to their dark age fight for daily survival trying to follow the spoor of a herd of wild pigs. The evidence for that is to be found in all continents of the world where the extreme poor have been lifted out of the life and death struggle of daily life in squalor by simple access to electric light, water delivered to the home, a bicycle, and a clinic they can ride to. Get rid of the "noble savage" myth once and for all please.

As a member of the Planetary Society, I was able to attend a symposium in Washington DC while the Shoemaker - Levy 9 comet was impacting Jupiter in 1994. It was AMAZING! Carl Sagan was the MC for the event (imagine that!) while Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy spoke. It was an honor to hear him speak and I won't forget it as long as I live.

I heard about him for a long time, but never had a chance to watch or listen. When I discovered his lectures and interviews few years ago I was blown away how precise and intelligent he was! I wish he lived longer and contributed more to science and popular science.

Sagan correctly located the reason for American religiosity: since there is no ethnic/racial coherence, God steps in as a symbol of unity. And better not to ask too many questions because the illusion falls apart. That’s why European nations are not religious; their primary identity is ethnic. One is born a German, for example. Of course, immigration may change all that. I wonder if the strong feelings of loyalty and devotion that Muslims have for their faith have something to do with their ethnic/national identities being weak. What does it mean to be a Syrian? If it’s a recent identity, maybe being a Sunni Muslim is more appealing.

Seems to me it was such a bad thing to be German after WWII that their government had to ban any reference Nazism. If Nazism has survived the war then it would likely be their god.

Arrogance of youth and also his styyle made me cringe a bit. I aleardy possessed a similar cosmic outlook. Also on a personal note, I am not very strong mathematically, and my physics is lamentable. I know that EU is mostly wrong, where it's right, it's trivial. For example, the most common form of regular matter in space is plasma. This is not controversial. Getting to grips with the interplay between plasma, electromagnetism, gravity and angular momentum is a subject which I think you will find has occupied many fine minds with an astrophysical bent for a long time. Also something your kind should like is the large range of scales over which such phenomena occur. Jets from very young stars, pulsars and quasars to name three. So to repeat: What is it we dumbfucks don't get?
