I made a mistake and damaged the customer’s vehicle

Do you ever have one of those days where you’re off your game and just can’t get back on it?? Well that was me on this day and my attempt to push through it led to a series of mistakes and poor decisions that ended with me damaging a customer’s vehicle for the first time in the history of Cascade Heavy Rescue. This Ford F-250 slid off the road in the snow and landed in the exact same trees as the Honda I pulled out a week earlier. I took the @NRCIndustries rollback even though I didn’t have the proper equipment for such a job yet, because it was the better choice if the truck needed towed afterwards.
As you’ll see in the video, this whole job was amateur hour at best, and is definitely not the type of work I want to be know for. I most definitely considered not even making this video, but they would be very hypocritical seeing as I have no problem holding other companies and manufacturers accountable when they fall short of their claims or have inferior products, so it’s only fair that I don’t hold back when I’m the one not meeting my standards.

Well as the owner of the truck and father of the driver, I feel I owe it to all of you to chime in! I spent the majority of my life in a career that constantly reminded me that bad stuff happens! Really tragic, life ending/altering things happen in the blink of an eye, and we're beyond fortunate that our kids were uninjured and all that was damaged was a truck. This could have turned out very different and I feel truly blessed. Casey, you are awesome and I cannot thank you enough for helping us out. I consider the little bit of damage that occurred as a result of the removal the cost of doing business, and it's truly all good! I also need to thank the DCSO for watching all of our backs that night! I appreciate that you were there for us and I'll never forget it! Thank you!

You have a great attitude, sir! Most important thing here is that nobody got hurt. If those trees weren't there, it would have been much worse! If that were me, I would just be overjoyed that he got it out of there, and it was fully drivable. Just call all those dents 'battle scars' and now you have a story to tell!

I'm a 20 + year career law enforcement officer. I've worked with alot of tow truck drivers. You are still one of the best I've seen. We all make mistakes once in awhile. How we learn from our mistakes makes us better at what we do. I've seen many vehicles that are way off the road and into the trees where it's impossible not to cause more damage to the vehicle during recovery. Great job! I'll be waiting for your next video.

Casey, I am recent new subscriber to your channel. I have browsed many other channels, looked at a few videos and moved on because I wasn’t impressed with the content. Then I found yours….looked at a couple videos, then another and another and another. I am now hooked on what you do and have seen enough already to get to know you as best one can though your channel. You have the character, honesty and integrity that is rarely seen anymore. After seeing this video, please don’t beat yourself up on this. You are human and a true professional at what you do. I was very pleased to see the comment from the owner of the truck and the understanding he had. The damage can be repaired like it never happened. The ordeal could’ve been much worse before you ever arrived with injuries. And don’t forget, you came out when another tow company refused. In Magnum Force, Dirty Harry said, "A man's gotta know his limitations." It is refreshing to hear someone admit he had some limitations that resulted in damage to a customer's vehicle and to see him hold himself accountable. BTW, I don't think it would be very realistic of any of us to expect perfection of you or of anyone else and those of us who have learned your work ethic and your kindness toward others, are not surprised to hear you admit when you fall short of that perfection. Well said and I agree with your assessment. None of us gets it right every single time. Mistake made, mistake examined and debriefed and task corrections discussed new equipment arrived.. The biggest lesson to be shared here wasn’t a procedural recovery error… it was 100% ownership of error and damage. As you said “I didn’t need to show you this video.” Casey you did… your moral package is so profound that you couldn’t not show us. Ownership of our own mistakes is something none of us is in love with. We do it because we feel we have too. We wouldn’t be us if we didn’t. Well done man. Maybe not the perfect recovery resulted in an exemplary example of “ownership” of one’s mistakes.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to just load the wrecker on the rollback and take it with. If you don’t need it, no big; but in a scenario like this, it’s there! If you need the rollback to transport the recovery, Grumpy might can drive it back or tow it on the stinger?

Casey, in a much earlier video you remarked that you always try to be as honest as you possibly can, and this situation is a prime example of it. The bad thing about doing videos is that you can look back and see the mistakes you made - but here's the kicker - you are human. In the end, the truck was recovered, and metal can be straightened, so please, don't beat yourself up with this. If I was in the owners situation, considering what the alternatives would have been, I'll take the small amount of damage that was done to my vehicle and just consider it an "oops". Also, much like the owner, I wouldn't tell you how much the repair was!

Everything can't go as planned....the fact you owned it and the customer handled the way they did is a testament to you! Also no one else was going to get the truck out the other tow service had already been out and said no to the job. You take the impossible jobs shit will happen. Casey, at your request, I purchased one of your “I never said I was good at this” shirts. It seems to be a very good quality shirt. As providence would have it, the shirt arrived on the same day as the workshop manual for my daughter’s vehicle. I proudly wore the shirt while showing her the workshop manual and emphasizing the statement from the shirt, “I never said I was good at this.” I think she made the connection. Quit beating yourself up, Casey. You are very conscientious with everything you do, but sometimes things don't go as planned. The reason your job is so interesting to you and us is that every recovery is a new unique challenge, but that means it's difficult if not impossible to know what the specific issues will be beforehand. With multiple recovery vehicles, it's difficult to have every tool you need in every truck every time (unless of course you have unlimited funds, which most of us don't). Always appreciate your integrity and honesty in your vids whether it's a review of a product or one of your recoveries. You're a good man!!!!

What I saw was, you had a truck down a steep snowy slope and you winched it back onto the road without any “serious “ damage to it. Yes there was a dent added to it, but you’re taking it way too hard. And you did the right thing in the end. And the owner wasn’t upset about the outcome.

The comment by the owner of the truck, that Casey pinned, says that the owner considers the damage to be "the cost of doing business, and it's truly all good." That's a cool owner who's willing to accept the damage and not charge Casey for it. Very upstanding folks all around in this rough situation. An upstanding owner who's not worried about charging Casey for it, and an upstanding tow truck company owner who's willing to cover the cost. It looks like it's going to be a wash. The owner gets his children back safe and sound, with a truck that's fully operational, even if it does have a little extra damage. Casey gets conformation that things happen and that no matter how many times you do something, unforeseen occurrences can cause even the best of us to make a wrong turn, that we think is a correct turn at that moment, and end up having a bad day. 2 good people who both had a bad day, but with the best day mixed in. The truck didn't roll, which was the best day that parent, and the kids, could have ever had.

Well done Casey you not only admit you make a mistake and often say you not very good at doing this stuff however you learn and teach so many others how to think things through and often do thing that are not the convention but in recovery if it works it makes it ok. The only problem i see is you do your best and if the light had been the same as it was when you pull that other car out you would have made different choices and had a different result. Don't beat yourself up to hard it happens and remember as every rescue you do without incident to the vehicle is a bonus as some of them are in situation where you do amazing work not to further damage the vehicle bening recoverd. also you admit when your wrong unlike some that say it was X Y and Z that caused it not me. The best is that the customer still commended you on doing it at all.

It was also in cold, rainy weather, as we can see in the video. The customer commented that it's just the cost of doing business for getting his children back safe and getting a truck back that's completely operational. The other companies weren't even going to touch it. Who knows how long it would have sat there, or if bad weather would have broken the tree and rolled the truck down the hill. The customer realizes that without Casey's help, he may have gotten back a totaled truck, instead of a dented one.

Great job Casey and most all of us applaud you for your honesty. Conditions out there were horrible, with ice, rain, snow, cliffs and danger. You did an excellent job overall, and the dents you added were pretty minor. Typically I wait to comment until I finish the entire video. This is just another reason I have mad respect for you Casey. 💩happens and how we deal with it sets us apart from others. Every profession has certain short cuts or work around methods they do. You being so honest and explaining what took place and what could have been done differently just goes to show what an honest man you are. And you dissected the entire recovery step by step and very honestly took ownership. Like the Dad said, at the end of the day it is just bent in metal and the people all were okay. the truck can be fixed. Like my Dad used to say: anyone can make a mistake. As long as you learn from it and don't make them again you learned your lesson. Keep your head up Casey!

Casey, this video proves a few things to me. You, sir, are a class act. Even though “I never said I’m good at this” is your mantra, you are excellent at your work, but since you are human, you are not perfect. You probably learned more from this recovery than you usually do from a dozen that go well. This recovery will result in your being even better in the future. This may be your first vehicle you damage and the fact that you say ( I never said I was good at this ) and the fact that showed us all on UKposts only makes you human and I have even more respect for you don't be hard on yourself as many recoveries that you do it was bound to happen and if your lucky enough it won't happen again but I think you would have a better chance at playing the lottery lol I'm willing to bet that guy isn't going to fix the truck. I think this is a case where focus on the job is paramount, talking to grumpy, telling the camera what’s going on , it’s dark and wet all add bumps into your train of thought. If you were just pulling out the truck and nothing else you would probably not compound your mistakes. We call it task loading when scuba diving and it almost always ends up a teaching moment. No one got hurt , trucks can be fixed. Good on you for putting it out there.

He said that the channel pretty much tanked his business. That creates a tight budget, yet he's still spending the time and money to do these recoveries for free. You don't get many decent people like that, in this day and age.

i would say many of your viewers can't call on you when they go off the road. They may be stuck with non-standard options for getting out. Your detailing of the way to fix your mistakes will be of great value to them. I know that just watching you detail your reasoning in hitch points, pull angles, etc. on a good tow have already saved me great costs. I appreciate the way you do this. Thanks Casey. The most important thing is that the owner got his kids back. A second bonus is that, since no other tow company was willing to even attempt it, Casey's work may have saved the truck from being totaled. Who knows how long it would have sat there until someone tried to get it out. Bad weather may have broken the tree and sent the truck tumbling down the hill. A couple of dents saved the truck. Well worth the cost, in my book.

Casey please don't beat yourself up, you work in very difficult conditions. I've seen trucks on normal dry roads do much more damage than that, driven away and not looking back. Casey pinned the owner's comment. The owner considers the dents to be "the cost of doing business, and it's truly all good." Sounds to me like Casey found a like-minded person as a customer and it doesn't sound like the owner is going to bother Casey with damage costs.

I had a guy come pick up a scrap pontiac with a new to him rollback. His "snatch block" was a random pipe he found in the cab that he shoved into the bed and held there until it bent, then he got another. I had a snatch block. I offered it... You still made their day way better!

Casey, I'm a HazMat truck driver. Got my CDL in Fairbanks Alaska in 2005. Last winter I was utterly exhausted and called in on my day off. I get to the end of my day and I have to deliver to College Way Chevron. Newport Ave was closed for construction and a detour was set up, it was uphill. I forgot to stop and chain up. I slid backwards down the hill and bent my fender. It took almost 20 years of extreme winter driving before I made a mistake causing damage. It happens to the best of us, don't beat yourself up to much, and I'm sure you learned from your mistake just as I did. Keep up the good work brother and keep helping.

I love this video. It's been a horrible year for me and your videos have helped lift the mood. Even if you are disapointed with yourself for simple mistakes here, posting this and sharing your thoughts at the time and at the posting as well as their reactions, just wraps this up into a special kind of video that shows how decent others can be. We all know shit happens, but he took it in stride and understood where some might have just flipped out. You always say you never claimed to be good at this, which I love on the shirts btw, but this shows why you actually are good at this. Good at admitting to and learning from mistakes. Good at dealing with a bit of adversity in what was going on. Just a good all around feel to this vid. After 20 years in volunteer fire and EMS, learning from mistakes is one of the most important things one can do, but owning up to mistakes also needs to happen. You got both covered. No one was hurt and sheet metal can be repaired or replaced. Wes, from the Watch Wes Work YT channel, had a more serious accident from a mistake and had the courage to post his video about it like you did so that others can learn from it. I learned from your video to be aware of the load and the anchor being sucked together and to leave 'escape routes' in and with the rigging. Thank you.

Honesty is why we like the videos. We all learn something new every day even if about ourselves. Thanks for keeping it real. Your videos inspire others. I have had recovery equipment for decades. Because you, Matt, Paul, Rory and Merlin make me miss the days of doing this stuff so much even though I am in and out of a chair and do not walk well I am going to go a head and build me one more truck. I have a 78 w200 big block 4 speed I will build my own hyd boom in the bed and upgrade the suspension to handle it. I am in a rural area with snow next to the mountains and I can help one more person in need it is all worth the work. I hope others feel the same and think about helping others. SSG.Bo.Retired.

That was hard to watch! Unfortunately this is the first video of yours I have ever watched. You can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles himself when he makes a mistake. As a fellow towing operator, specifically heavy wrecker I was screaming in my head as soon as you started. I have put my self in more than 1 dumb spot. Hindsight is always 20-20. Good job owning your mistakes and sharing them with us all. We all have shortcuts that we take sometimes and we forget how big the consequence can be. I can't wait to watch some of your other videos.

Don't beat yourself up too much Casey, it was a difficult recovery and yes your new rigging would have been nice to have. But you made it work with what you had. The customer didn't seem to upset about the additional dent and was grateful to have his family out of harms way.

No one is perfect and you saved that truck. Way to own your mistakes but you saved their vehicle when the other company wouldn’t do it. Then when you add those conditions and the fact you don’t charge people it just speaks to the type of person you are. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

Matt from Matt's Off Road Recovery also admitted to making a mistake, and he said what he should do before the issue and still forgot to do it. Recovery never always goes as planned and we all have to adapt to the challenges. We see it alot on Highway Through Hell and Rescue 401. I enjoy your content and your lessons, keep up your good work and be safe.
