00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:25 Casting the Runes
00:58:00 Credits, thanks and further listening
Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a medievalist and scholar, and is probably the best known and most celebrated English ghost story writer of the 20th century, although he actually began composing supernatural tales in the late Victorian era, beginning with 'Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book' (1893). He was born in Kent, but spent most of his childhood in Suffolk, a county which features prominently in many of his stories, including 'Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'. Several of James's protagonists also reflect his own antiquarian interests, with academics and historians featuring regularly. James published four volumes of ghost stories in his lifetime: 'Ghost Stories of an Antiquary' (1904), 'More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary' (1911), 'A Thin Ghost and Others' (1919) and 'A Warning to the Curious and Other Stories' (1925).
During a long academic career which encompassed several positions at King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College, M. R. James developed a tradition of reading his ghost stories aloud to a group of friends, most famously on Christmas eve, and the majority of his published stories were first heard in that setting.
'Casting the Runes' was first published in 1911 as the fourth story in 'More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary', James' second collection of supernatural tales. It has gone on to be one of his most anthologised stories, inspiring adaptations on television and radio, as well as a celebrated British horror film, 'Night of the Demon' (1957), the only cinematic presentation to date of a story adapted from the works of M. R. James.

One of my all time favourite stories from the entire "Ghost" and "Horror" genre. Without a shadow of doubt one of MR James's greatest stories. In my humble opinion one of his masterpieces. Unlike other MR James classics there is an an up tempo and quick pace to the tale. Simon has applied his usual top rate talents to the proceedings. By pure coincidence there was a very loose adaptation shown last night(30th October) on the TV channel "Talking Pictures". This loose adaptation stars Dana Andrews and is set in more contemporary times and is called "Night of the Demon". Worth watching and by it's own merit has become a cult classic in it's own right.

@@LisaCarso Totay agree Lisa.. No doubt you have seen the great late Sir Christopher Lee play MR James in a wonderful series by the BBC in the early 2000's. Sir Christopher Lee as MR James tells the stories to his audience which are his students. Great series and very atmospheric. "Casting The Runes" is one of MR James"s masterpieces. The BBC from the 1970's to just a few years ago have adapted many MR James stories. Mark Gatiss is an English actor and huge fan of MR James and he has adapted some.

@johnroche7541 Hello John, how lovely to hear from you, I hope you're keeping well? I remember this story was one of your requests, so I do hope you enjoyed it - apologies it's taken me a while, I was actually a little bit uncertain about doing it because it's such a well-known piece and there seem to be an awful lot of readings of it available already, but then I thought Halloween was a sufficient excuse for me to have my stab at it. It's many years since I saw 'Night of the Demon', but it's certainly a horror classic! Best wishes, Simon

@@BitesizedAudio Absolutely great as always to hear from you Simon. It is great to see that the channel is going from success to success and strength to strength.. So richly deserved. As a fellow MR James devotee I would highly recommend a series made in the early 2000's by the BBC. It stars the late great Sir Christopher Lee as MR James and he is telling students these tales. Great concept. From the 1970's to just a number of years ago the BBC have adapted some of the stories of MR James and they are very good. Mark Gatiss is an English actor and huge MR James fan and he has adapted some. Obviously reading them first time is the real treasure but listening to a top rate actor and narrator like Simon reading them is an audio treat and pleasure. Remember folks the origins of Halloween can be traced back to our Celtic cousins in the Emerald Isle.

Simon - I really enjoyed when you added details about the authors into the audio itself. I understand that might have been inconvenient for your channel but perhaps you would consider making videos specifically about individual authors like the history of M.R. James, and then link to all of your narrations of his works. I think it makes the stories we listen to much more interesting when we know a little bit about who wrote them. I know you put the details in the descriptions but I'd just love to listen to them
@BitesizedAudio
@BitesizedAudio 6 місяців тому
Thanks for your comment. I have thought about doing some more intros, not for every video but perhaps for a collection (e.g. an anthology of M. R. James or similar). I received mixed feedback about those intros, with some quite trenchant views expressed telling me I "ruined" the stories, "get on with it" etc etc. Only a minority, admittedly, but it was a bit annoying to be criticised for putting in the extra work... Also, I worried they would become repetitive, e.g. when doing multiple stories by the same author and featuring the same characters. Anyway, I do have it in mind and will try to incorporate some more notes in future recordings next year.

What a delight to be notified on All Hallows that one of the internet's finest audiobook narrators is reading one of Monty's finest stories again. I see that this year's BBC "Ghost Story for Christmas" is going to be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot No. 249". Do you know what I think you should do?

Thanks Simon. Ah yes, I was interested to see that too. I have had 'Lot No.249' on my to-do list for ages now, and in fact had it marked as a possible for this Christmas, but alas I've run out of time now... starting rehearsals for 'A Christmas Carol'. I have a few stories "in the can" which I'm hoping to find time to edit and upload over the coming weeks while I'm busy in the theatre, but didn't get around to that one. (I do have a Christmas-themed Doyle story recorded though...) Anyway I do hope to get around to 249 before too long, hopefully sometime in 2024!

I listened to Simon's excellent reading of Casting the Runes whilst eating custard and prunes. Spooky coincidence, eh? [Also a great big lie, but never mind...] 😁

Thanks Page Burner, appreciated. Yes, I concur - I can't stand AI recordings, and I deplore the increasing use of them!

How do I become a member of the channel to gain access to the members only content? I’ve subscribed but don’t have access. What am I doing wrong?

Hello @Matthbhhh, thanks for asking. It can be a bit confusing due to different terminology used on various different platforms, subscribing is free on UKposts, whereas the membership option is for those who want/are able to pay a contribution to help support me. Unlike on Bandcamp, for example, where "subscribing" is the paid option while "following" is free. Anyway, you can join as a channel member on UKposts via this link: ukposts.infojoin However, if membership doesn't suit you there are alternative platforms, e.g. Patreon, Bandcamp, and Buy Me A Coffee for ad-hoc or one off contributions. I'm not able to put external links in comments on YT, but links to all the above can be found in the video description of any video on the channel, and I try to ensure that all the same benefits (such as extra stories) are available to supporters across the different platforms. I hope that helps. Many thanks and best wishes
