totally agree. another one of my audition songs. underrated song and singer. it resonates for me much more than I'm Every Woman. This is the heart of blues under a pop song with an incredible singer, phenomenal range. total respect. still. listened to this song on a freaking record player over and over. i couldn't stop listening.

Toni Smith who sang for Tom Browne on Jamaica Funk comes the closest to Chaka. Even on some of Tom's other she sounds like Chaka.

prenticeone Maybe you're right. Those who took time to listen to her, do appreciate her, but in my opinion that circle is far too small. Maybe I should say that she should have been more popular for the qualities she has shown. This song is one of her best products, Yet relatively few peaple know it. Everybody knows the -to me- far lesser "I'm every woman" (and then mostely Whitney Houstons version, most people even don't remember it being sung by Chaka first). This lady has more soul than Whitney Houston (who is a completer - but not better - singer). Compare Whitney's fame to Chaka's. But then again, this world is seldom fair or just. Same story with Anita Baker. THAT LADY HAS SOUL. She can sing a phonebook and get you to tears. How popular did she become? Not popular enough (or too short) for her qualities. Her best songs ("No one in the world" and "Been so long" aren't even her most well-known (especially the latter). And yes, tastes differ, but everyone should recognise quality. Mahalia Jackson is a great singer, wether you like her music or not.

LCG2210 Her very artistry, like Sarah Vaughan, automatically places her as one of the greatest in a very short list, and means she won’t be understood or accepted by the average radio listening and record buying public. Genius is usually discovered by the masses long after the artist has come and gone, leaving their body of work. You obviously have exceptional, great taste. However, the general public takes whatever crap radio and the like put before them. Compromise? CK was on Warner Bros. for so long ...do you really want to say she could’ve done more to be accepted by people who think she only made one or two songs?!! You might want to read up on it. It’s the labels Promotional Dept, A&R who are responsible for pushing new music from the artist roster. The sure thing usually gets the $ backing not the true creative artist who’s doing something a bit more cerebral, a bit more challenging. Chaka has a lot of Grammys but she should have way more based on her albums. She sings giving 160% on every recorded song! The music biz is a Business and what goes on behind closed doors isn’t fair a lot of the time, and the people being favoured, household names are not spilling the beans, as it makes them the Stars 💵💵💵 @SoulKirk
