Chamath Palihapitiya: I Am A Buffett 'Disciple' But He's Wrong About Bitcoin | CNBC
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett is wrong about bitcoin, tech venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya said Wednesday.
"Not everybody is right all the time," the former Facebook executive told CNBC's "Squawk Box." He said knowledge about technology is not in the Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO's "circle of competence."
Buffett bashed bitcoin Monday in an interview with CNBC's Becky Quick, saying the world's largest cryptocurrency doesn't produce anything except more buyers looking to make money by selling to new buyers. Berkshire Vice Chairman Charlie Munger and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, a Berkshire board member, slammed bitcoin as well.
Palihapitiya, who called himself a Buffett "disciple," said he sees the cryptocurrency as a replacement to gold. "Something like bitcoin is really important," Palihapitiya said, "because it is not correlated to the rest of the market."
Palihapitiya added that he feels he is "in two different universes. I need a passport to go between the bitcoin world and the regular world."
He said people like him who have owned the cryptocurrency since 2012 view it as a hedge to the "traditional financial infrastructure." Whether that's true or not is unclear, he added, "but that's how we've all viewed it."
It's important to remember what happened during the financial crisis, Palihapitiya said. "Everything broke down" and "things that we thought were hedges went away."
The cryptocurrency, which has faced heavy skepticism, was around $9,275 on Wednesday morning, according to industry site CoinDesk.
Over his four-year tenure at Facebook, which started in 2007, Palihapitiya served in various management roles, including vice president of user growth.
In December, Palihapitiya bashed social media, and by extension Facebook, for creating a society that confuses "popularity" with "truth." He argued, "The tools that we have created today are starting to erode the social fabric of how society works."
Facebook took issue with Palihapitiya's remarks, saying in a statement that he hasn't worked for the company for six years, and insisting that the company has undergone changes since then.

Stefan Larsen just because Gates made billions from archaic PC architecture in the 80s and 90s absolutely doesn’t make him correct about cryptocurrency. That is utterly idiotic, shortsighted and ignorant. @Pseudonemonics
@Pseudonemonics 6 років тому
Stefan Larsen That’s fine, but I hope you also see the satire in a bunch of geriatrics rather rudely dismissing a nascent transformative technology they know very little about. Gates cared little to learn about the Internet in the 90s, hence he dismissed it to Microsoft’s detriment (see: Google). It’s a pattern that repeats ad infinitum. History would suggest these wise but ignorant to bitcoin individuals are no different.
@crispinsday
@crispinsday 6 років тому
History would suggest that it's possible that they will be wrong about bitcoin, or that they will be right to avoid bitcoin as they did MBSs and stocks like Cisco in the 2000s. So basically, what opportunities these men did or did not take, to their benefit or to their detriment, is totally irrelevant in anticipating Bitcoin's success or failure. What is relevant are the facts about Bitcoin, and the facts about the history of securitised assets and market mania, which make a compelling case against bitcoin.

Bitcoin could go to $100k. Who knows. The problem with Bitcoin is that it doesn’t have any store of value. You can’t use it for anything, you can’t even physically hold it. It’s based solely on speculation. It’s not backed by anything. It’s a decent thing to gamble on with good odds that you’ll make money on it. But I wouldn’t hold it long-term. Obviously, if you could go back in time, you buy it like crazy, as would I. But no one can predict exactly where the ceiling is. And there is a risk of significant collapse with it. I think it’ll eventually hit $75k at least, but I think it’s possible in 2 years or whatever that it’s under $10k. But hey, I’m just some guy on UKposts.
@codedirtytome7178
@codedirtytome7178 3 роки тому
@@metallifreak100 I'm neither a proponent or opponent to crypto currencies. I agree that it's very difficult to purchase anything with it because very few businesses accept it, for now. Even if they did, it would be pretty dumb to use it for grocery shopping. If 1 bitcoin can get you 1 gallon of milk today, but potentially 2 gallons tomorrow, why not just buy your groceries with the USD that is much more stable? It's the same reason no one buys groceries with gold. In a weird way, I don't agree about not being able to hold it. It can be stored on a physical wallet. And even though cash can be held, at the end of the day it's just a piece of paper that only has value because we all believe it does. Hell, even the USD isn't backed by anything either. In that sense, it is very similar to crypto currency. Also, most people don't carry their entire life savings around with them in their wallet or keep it in their own safe at home. They keep it in a bank which allows purchases through a debit card. Purchases made with a debit card update a ledger of digital transactions that will eventually be resolved by the bank. Sounds almost like a blockchain, doesn't it? Slower, for sure, but the same affect. It seems like there's more similarities than there are differences. I also agree that what we're seeing now is temporary. Although I don't think we'll see 75k any time soon. The last spike in 2017 took approximately 140 days before it turned down. We're right around 140 days into this current spike. It then took almost a year exactly before it leveled off around $3.5k. But hey, I'm also just some guy on UKposts.

@Albundy423
@Albundy423 4 роки тому
@Cristo39 Because his words/thoughts were bad. Depending on the macroeconomic event, everything can be correlated with everything over a short timeframe. Since it was/is a liquidity-crisis, every single asset that can be sold fast is going to tank. We also saw this in gold. However, bitcoin has recovered way faster than most other assets that did tank except gold, the reason for this simply being that you see a real lack in supply for gold because refineries were shutting down hence a spike in price. In the greater picture, I think it is fair to state that bitcoin is less correlated with traditional markets than most other assets are. Of course, if you pick one single event over a 1-month time span, well you will find that everything correlates with everything at some point. In order to measure a correlation between assets one has to look at a full cycle of economic boom and downturn which is not fully available right now but as bitcoin is almost back to pre-crisis levels while e.g. stocks are still -20% around the board gives you a good idea how "correlated" they really are.
@kronusx3484
@kronusx3484 4 роки тому
@Cristo39 You are correct, his hedge did not work for now, but I could see in a couple of years bitcoin becoming more traditional and gaining a lot more value compared to the regular currency. True, but it could've literally been a correction from the fact it's a new asset class, making it volatile. It's gaining the stability over time, but clearly still not a 100% safe hedge against the markets. Nobody puts 100% of savings into bitcoin, it's mostly a small percentage in portfolios. However, as it grows it eats up more and more monetary energy. And with it comes price stability. If bitcoin every gets to $1 million a coin, it will be much less volatile and behave more like gold does. Interestingly, bitcoin bounced back from that March sell off quite quickly and fervently. Kind of like what gold did. Except gold didn't suffer the drop, but bitcoin made out of that scenario unscathed and prepped for the bull run we're in, out performing most assets out the pandemic gate. Which means to me that bitcoin is finding a home somewhere between being a safe haven and a risk asset, but as time goes on, seemingly more safe and less risk. But who knows. Something big could be stirring...

Stick with XRP and BTC as much as you can guys. If everyone sells when it starts to fall, which at one point it will, the dream may be lost because of it being too volatile for companies to get behind. just remember where it's going and don't be put off by short term fluctuations and don't facilitate this dream into becoming a nightmare. The coinbase thing will undoubtedly be replaced by another incident but it will always correct to higher until it's mooned naturally. Don't give up on it and start day trading it, it will take too much time and concentration. Remember XRP is probably bitcoin part 2. It is quite unfortunate that the most popular word lately amongst crypto enthusiasts and traders alike is “hodl.” This concept of “holding on for dear life” in itself may not be a bad idea but why hold on to an investment instrument which could make you some money, or make you very miserable tomorrow? Making a good profit off crypto is easy if and only if you can find the right entry point and exit point in your day trading. Someone I discovered that has tremendously helped me with this is Mr. Kaniel Nolasco. He has a system which is so effective it amazes me. I have been using his signals and strategies and have turned out a very impressive profit over the last two months. I would suggest him for beginners and even more experienced traders who have a problem turning in a consistent profit. It’s not about being right or wrong on bitcoin. Chamath is right. Why not have something in your portfolio completely uncorrelated to the rest of your investments? It won’t hurt you. As for people that bet their houses on bitcoin, there is no context where that is a good idea, regardless of whatever asset class you’re talking about. There will be another market correction, and when that happens, people will see the true value of owning something decentralized from the rest of the market.

"It won't hurt you" LOLOLOL ask the people who bought at 19k if it hurts .... bitcoin is NOT an investment as much as the cheerleaders want it to be. currencies, by definition, are not investments folks (the same reason you would never allocate into the pound or the yen longterm, makes very little sense) ..... but of course, most folks will never listen. at least you were warned

Scott Belton In terms of currencies not being an investment,that is factually incorrect- there are plenty of derivatives used daily by the largest financial players in the world, JP Morgan Chase and the rest. It would be better to say currencies are not your personal favorite investment, which is fair. In terms of buying at 19k, if you actually do trade derivatives you would know that buying due to herd mentality or because the price keeps going up is not the way to go- that was never going to be a good idea, even if the price continued to rise. There’s no analysis on that idea. The people that did that had absolutely no idea what they were doing, which is why Chamath, if you watch this full interview, refers to people who bought Bitcoin in 2012. Those are the people that actually did critical analysis on Bitcoin and Blockchain and really understand its value. Those people are completely not worried about price fluctuations, because they are looking at the long term value, not a few months. The point in all of this is that it won’t hurt you to have a small part of your holdings in something uncorrelated to the market. Don’t bet your house on it. Don’t buy it on credit. Never bet your house on any investment, which is what a lot of speculators did when the price was at 19k- it is never a good idea to bet your house on any investment, does not matter how good it looks.

Maybe in another country or language. Maybe you don’t understand. For the folks that bought at 19K congrats for not listening when it was 2K. This is the nature of how markets correct. If you bought at 19K you better have the balls to sit through the correction until it reaches 50K.

The same happened with e-mail when it arrived during the fax era. So many did not believe in it, so it was not regulated (not legally accepted) for a long time despite its advantages (digital letters, speed, multiple recipients). But those who understood the advantages, invested early and later became the tycoons of a new industry: email services, etc. The established generations fear the word digital. They have a "need" to touch things. Now it's the other way around: digital means better than concrete. It means speed, ubiquity, accessibility, globality, updatable, moveable, accessible from anywhere. This is evident for young people.

@@ionsoroceanu76 yes, because smart contracts can be done on many different systems and platforms, and you don't need Ethereum tokens to do it. @ionsoroceanu76
@ionsoroceanu76 3 роки тому
Well, if people behavior will be to gravitate on Bitcoin, its price will increase, because many people will want to buy it. But it will work until the first buyers will start to sell to make real money. So i don't think that Bitcoin is a storage asset. Is a speculative one. A bubble. The point of any kind of money is to be spend. But no one will never spend money if their value increse. For common money this trap is solved by inflation. And here bitcoin has a problem. Thank you for explanetion of difference between bit and eth. It dosent change my mind about the value of Cryprocurrencies.
@SAL-fs1mr

@@ionsoroceanu76 Bitcoin is still in a growth phase where there are people who use it as a store of value AND those who speculate on it. There are plenty of examples of first buyers of bitcoin who already sold out, but bitcoin continues to work just fine, so you should try to dig deeper to get a better understanding of what makes bitcoin truly valuable. money is supposed to be a means of accepting payment, storing value, and spending (so no, not just spending). People will have to spend their saved up bitcoin at some point because there are always expenses that can't be delayed (food, rent, medical costs, etc etc). Recently, Microstrategy bought over $400 million worth of bitcoin because it is clear that "cash is trash" as billionaire Ray Dalio teaches. even warren buffet is having to acknowledge that cash is going to inflate at a much faster rate in the coming few years, so be prepared.
