@@WalkwYah “Huh” what? There would be NO Harvey Weinstein without Charlie Chaplin. Not in terms of cinema, but in terms of RAPE. Chaplin invented the casting couch. It was well-known, even at the time. Chaplin’s “rival”, Buster Keaton, even once said that because of the size of Charlie’s member, the casting couch was Chaplin’s only way to actually lay a woman. Keaton, during the culture of the time, was known to NOT have that problem. Furthermore, Chaplin liked them YOUNG. Chaplin initially met his second wife when she was TWELVE YEARS OLD, before impregnating and marrying her at 15/16. Learning from that mistake, Chaplin married his 4th and final wife, Oona, mere weeks after she turned 18. They’d been acquainted for a year prior. He was 54 at the time. Chaplin was the OG Hollywood predator. This is a statement of fact. But, much like Michael Jackson, his influence and prolificacy were so outsized that nobody ACTUALLY cared that much. Minimal impact on legacy. Plus, for Chaplin, he’s got the added advantage of having done all of this nearly 100 years ago. Do I need to explain further?

That doesn’t fully take away from the squick factor, but at the time child marriage was still extremely prevalent around the world and 16 was probably not considered as bad as it is today. Calvin Edwin "Cal" Ripken Jr. (born August 24, 1960), nicknamed "The Iron Man", is an American former baseball shortstop and third baseman who played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles (1981-2001). His season highlight came on September 6, 1995, when Ripken surpased Lou Gehrig's 56-year-old record for consecutive games played (2,130 games). The crowd in the stands, the opposing players and all four umpires gave Ripken a standing ovation lasting more than 22 minutes, one of the longest standing ovations for any athlete. During the ovation, Ripken did a lap around the entire Camden Yards warning track to shake hands and give high-fives to the fans.

Charlie didnt want to initially come back to the US to accept the Oscar as he feared the reception towards him would be negative. It was his wife Oona, who convinced him to accept this honour. He was fearful that people would have forgotten him after all the years away from the screen and that his return to the US would be greeted with hostility. You only have to watch this video to see how humble and emotional he was by the audience's reaction to him. Charlie Chaplin was a genius and a true legend.

The fact that he only ever revived an honorary Oscar gives hope to all film makers today, espetially comedic, that don't have the best reputation with critics. I honestly think that of modern comedic film makers the one most likely to be remembered as the Chaplin of our era is Seth Rogen. If you're a film geek you'll probably disagree whole heartedly, but terms of modern comedic cinema, he parallels Chaplin.

Abby Phillips Birdman won best Picture tho, so did Annie Hall and It Happened One Night. The Oscars like comedies too.

Abby Phillips uhh no... first you have to understand that mr chaplin was given a special honorary award by the academy for "the circus" it preceded the "honorary oscar" in 72' by 40+ years. rather then take all 4 categories for best actor/director/writer/comedy picture, the academy removed him from the running and distinguised him as in a category all his own. "for versatility and genius in acting/writing/directing/producing" say that word again..."genius" sinkin in yet? the achievement of "the circus" in the annals of films at that time was inimitable and deserving of more prestige than his competition could compete with. likewise, the special honorary award in 29' is paramount to the honorary oscar 72' chaplin still received an accolade from the academy for a singular piece of work and a dubious oscar ONE year after the honorary in 1972 for his score in limelight. count 2 oscars. an honorary in 1972 and one in 73' for music plus the special honorary award given for the circus in 29'. "the circus" special award acknowledgement by the academy that ultimately surpassed his competiton was a validation of his genius and work. lets not forget it also was the very 1st academy awards. writer/director/actor/producer... things like this are rare for filmmakers and award ceremonies. not to mention it was unheard of at that time to receive multiple category nominations. and no, seth rogen compared to the master that was chaplin diminishes the wonderment/charm/mastery that that man was. you dont have to be a "film geek" and pass on more diminishment with that callous approach to this artform. the comparitive diminishment of one of the founding fathers of cinema by saying rogen parallels anything that man accomplished is laughable at best, and unmeritable at least. let me know when rogen composes/directs/produces/acts/writes his pictures and does it per film. every film. reinvents vaudeville to do stage work and has a silent film body of work in the mid 70's. starts a collaborative film company. all of this and add 50+ years in the industry, then... maybe... rogen can be held in the same breathe that was this man. you effectively compared a master to an apprentice. and p.s. the closest comparison to a "chaplin of our era" is woody allen. mr allen has "eras" under his belt. eras! aaaaand last but certainly not least, critics have NO say who wins the oscar. its peers who do the voting and "reputation with critics" means absolutely nothing. this isnt some golden globes foreign press voting structure. its peers. NOT critics/press/media who do the voting. TL:DR 1. chaplin has 3 awards from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. 3! 2. rogen has yet to be proven as anything nearing chaplins genius. 3. "reputation with critics" means less than nothing concerning the academy awards or the AMPAS voting structure, let alone the honorary awards they bestow. its peers who cast the votes. know your history or youll be doomed to repeat it.

***** Without Him Comedy for sure would have been completely different. Just because there isn't sound, doesn't mean there isn't talent.

One must understand Charlie's life when watching this video! Betrayed by a country he loved, he was kicked out of the country. After thirty years, the US finally opened its doors back to him, and offered him this honorary award. If we go back farther, we can see his hopes and dreams as a young child enslaved to an orphanage. His mother in an asylum, his father an alcoholic. Charlie, against all the odds, rose up to become one of the Greats. I can't help but see Charlie's entire life swelling up in the form of tears... He did swell

“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me crying.”- Charlie Chaplin. This quote was from the greatest comedian. I can definitely relate the reason behind this saying.

You sure he loved America? This is a quote from him about the US:- Whether I re-entered that unhappy country or not was of little consequence to me. I would like to have told them that the sooner I was rid of that hate-beleaguered atmosphere the better, that I was fed up of America's insults and moral pomposity ... Don’t think he thought that highly of America dude. The US might have treated him better if he wasn’t English, which of course he was.
