Is a cheap gaming monitor enough or should you rather buy a premium monitor instead? How do they compare for gaming and are there any differences in picture quality?

Whenever I need to check out what monitor is worth in the price range of myself or anyone around me I check this channel. It's done incredibly well. Very informative and I really like that he actually tests a lot of different things others don't. I got the MSI OPTIX G241 because it had a very high contrast with decent ghosting for an IPS monitor that runs on 144hz which I can use with Nvidia G-Sync. My GTX 1080 pairs well with 1080p and a high refreshrate and I'm really happy with the screen quality.

I have one question since I'm trying to gather info especially for 27'' 144Hz monitors. Does the speed of the monitor actually affects the contrast ratio ? Right now I'm sitting on a Dell S2721DGFA which has wonderful colors but poor blacks/whites (I'm using your ICC profile as well) but from what I can see most of these monitors on this category have similar results in terms of contrast ratio.

Another interesting budget monitor to compare this Msi Optix G273QF to would be the VIOTEK GFI27DBXA. The VIOTEK GFI27DBXA is 27 inches, resolution of 2560x1440, 180hz that you can unofficially overclock to 240hz, 101% DCI-P3 coverage, 141% sRGB coverage, a BGR subpixel layout, 600 nits HDR (without local dimming), and runs for a shocking price range of $370 U.S. to $330 U.S. when on sale. I know a monitor with this high of specs at the sub $400 U.S. price range sounds like garbage, however “Tom’s Hardware” gave it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

6:00 it blows my mind that manufacturers can't get back light strobing (aka black frame insertion) right. It's their own circuitry that controls when one frame ends & the other begins, yet it seems none get it quite right. 6yrs ago, I bought an Asus monitor for $250 that could do 3D. A friggin' 3rd party app was made that effectively tricked it into doing BFI & it did it perfectly. I recently bought Gigabyte's M32U for $750 & am very disappointed in its bfi. very strong red ghost image. When I dart my eyes from one spot to another, I notice a slight redness wherever there's white out of the corner of my eye. I'm on the fence if it's even worth turning on bfi.

The price difference is mainly due to the Predator having a 10 bit panel and not 8 bit like the Msi. I suspect you tested a defective Acer panel as mine could reach 88% Dci-p3 gamma volume color by only changing gamma to 2.4 with peak brightness 429 nits. Im sure user experience is different from panel to panel though. Either way, really nice review. Im sure the MSI is still a steal at that price of $289. I personally only paid $430 for my Predator.

@@GraveUypo Yes and no. Even SDR movies look better by switching to 10 bit, the gradient becomes visually smoother and shadows are clearer. It also happens in any videogames, the brightness 420-450 nits looks better than 350 or lower. This reviewer didn't test these monitors thoroughly. If l chose between a low HDR $400-450 monitor (not $500) vs SDR $300, I would probably pay the extra, $400-450 monitor in HDR (even low quality HDR 400) looks definitely better. Just a regular 'brand engineering' and 'OEM magic' - might well turn up the boards and the panels are the same, with slightly different firmware. Happens in all walks of life, technology in particular. For example, I remember back in the late 80s there was a lens I wanted, made by Tamron, who also made the same thing as OEM for Leica (with Leica's logo & mounting). The Tamron 'as Tamron' (with Canon FD mounting) was c.a. £250, whilst the Leica branded one - £420. I was so happy I needed the Canon flavour! 🙂

Because for some not understandable by me reason, colorfull hdr presentations looks super nice. So the question is: why games doesn't? And it's colidated with the fact that hdr is tested specifically on hdr 1000 TV's, and for some reason the main thing in hdr games is light, and not colour.

And this range has like...15 monitors? And only if you count in half-baked local dimming. For you real hdr might start at 16bits, I don't care, I still will use my hdr600 monitor. The two monitor i've come up with is the Asus VG278QR TN panel or Pixio Px279 prime Fast ips. The most important for me is less ghosting/motion blur possible while keeping okay colors. I don't mind viewing angle being bad. It's gonna be my main monitor. Can't seems to find anyone who did a test on google/youtube/reddit. Can you help me choose wich one you think is the best? Or maybe I should consider another monitor?

The Acer seems to have much more crisper colors, while the MSI seems as if it has a weird greenish tint on which makes the whites and blacks look really bad in comparison. I don't know if it's because of a setting you tinkered with or if it straight up looks that bad, but on that alone I would give the Acer the edge. All that being said, the MSI still is solid, but the visuals don't sell it for me.

I know this is a old video but what would you recommend currently "price for performance"? I'm focused on panel quality. Thanks!

thanks to black friday (or black week, as some stores around here call it) i got myself two Asus 27inch 1440p 165hz monitors which are ips and low 1ms mprt, they have also some speakers and adjustable stand as well as all goodies like hdmi 2.0 and headphone jack, oh boy. One costs 399€ but now it was only 199€ so I got two for the price of one

I see a big difference in contrast an color cast. The MSI is lower in contrast and has a greenish cast while the Other one is more neutral and more contrasty.

Do you recommend buying the MSI G273QPF (same in this video but with adjustable stand) or MSI MAG274QRF (not the QD version) ? I also checked the Gigabyte FI27Q and Acer xb273ugs, so there are a lot of options :D I would use the monitor for usual tasks, browsing, movies and a little bit of gaming. Thank you in advance!

Is the color space between rhe two the same too? Or does the acer support a wider gamut?

In all honest everything but the panel is what makes the price of the monitor so could be better to start measuring the weight of both monitors as a starting point. The panel might be hard tech stuff but is just a thin plastic coding with some other materials on top, light weight and once you star mass production probably cost cents compare to all others parts including internal circuit boards inside.

I only look for 3 things when buying a monitor, screen size, refresh rates, and ms response time. Preferably 25 in., 240hz, and 1ms. 0.5ms is good too but not worth extra pay tbh

a contrast ratio below 1000:1 would be a knockout criteria for me. looks like the main difference of the panels. still doesnt justify the price difference.

Hey any chance you could recommend a 30/32" monitor? I use it mostly to watch videos on youtube, movies/show and play videogames. That's it. I don't really play super FPS games, but sometimes I do. Would be awesome to get something in the up to 600 euros range. Thanks. Loved your videos, very clear and straigthfoward

There's one question bothering me. If monitor have low contrast ration, I'll gonna see worse in games dark places (like tarkov), if I turn up my contrast and gamma in nvidia, do the dark places gonna showed up, or these sliders starting from monitor points and just add all settings above it ?

Guys I have a doubt, Iv'e read in a comment that the new BenQ MOBIUZ EX2510S is a downgrade from the 2510, because it has not a true 8 bit display, but rather a 6 bit + FRS and the colors are worse due to that, Is it true? Or the panel manufacturers are the same? Is it a downgrade (with worse color performance) or an upgrade (having the same performance as the old model but with the plus of more refresh rate)?

Personal experience: Me and my friend bought reasonably similar specs but after a lot of testing and long usage the 350 € I paid for my LG and the 200€ he paid for his Asus Monitor its crystal clear that my purchase was even overall a better choice. My black color tones look astonishing compared to the same IPS Panel Type and anti gosting showes many improvements on the LG one, aswell as backlight levels certanly make up for the price bumb. This video has an expensive monitor with additional but useless features
