It’s is under United Nations that Mainland China is the only legitimate government of China and 1.4 billion Chinese people is totally resolute against any countries (really it’s mainly US and the Taiwanese separatist) try to harm Chinese sovereignty.

According to some Taiwan media, Chinese needed to do so because they didn't have actual invasion experience like the US army, and secondly it's to show that they indeed have good missile range, air force and so on, so that US carriers have zero chance to engage. If the US army decides not to engage, it's a lot better than having an actual military conflict, which puts the governments on both sides in difficult positions when the whole nation is upset
