31:27 “if you let a man in there. . . some of them will do very vile things” that’s actually why female egyptian mummies are more decayed than male ones. that’s because the family would hold onto the body until it started to decompose so no one would be ‘tempted’ while she’s being embalmed. tale as old as time, unfortunately

There are many obscure rituals found in texts from Ancient Egypt, hadn't thought of that one, theTransgendered Pharo was one whose whole family was desecrated and removed from history because they changed the gods that were worshiped, and a power struggle, and murders took place within the family. During Roman history as well some obscure beliefs, rituals such as Caligula, who would have been imprisoned today for sexual deviations..

there was a case about a Japanese child called Roro chan who did a suicide on stream, jumping from her apartment. She jumped with her camera so you can even see the moment she hits the ground. What's disgusting is that there's someone that encourages her to jump, as doing so will "make her a legend". Her stream was removed- however a gif of the moment she jumped was still available in the internet for some reason. there's even a song about this incident

I'm with Chinese heritage, never heard of ghost marriage. My uncle died after university. He was about to get married... my aunt also died when she was 2 yrs old due to high fever. It's crazy why people believe in ghost marriage. Do you want to marry the 2 and 3 years old? In fact, mum to me a fortune teller was invited to my grand parents house to tell fortune etc. he told my uncle there is a little girl that is with you. She loves you and brings you good luck. He then realised it's his older sister. So maybe kids just just remains kids.... I'm a Christian so I don't know how it all works?? Maybe Christians goes to heaven and the rest ... may be get another form of life in another world? Anyway, he then said there's another younger man in this house. Not sure if he mentioned about an old man. That would be my grandad but he's a Christian. I better check with mum to see if grandad is still around.

the black market selling of dead bodies and human traficking are a much, much bigger reality than anyone ever wants to think about. It's so bad that the nations of Belarus, Austria, the Uninted States, Canada, German, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and several others, including a handful in the Middle East and Africa all have task forces within their police that are specifically there to help combat human trafficking. Another sad fact is that the majority of human trafficking and black market dealings go through military bases, at least here in the U.S.. It is incredibly upsetting.

you only focus that "HE can be "happy in the afterlife"", it goes both ways, how do you know SHE isn't happy and have someone WHILE HE isn't happy? This is done in Chinese tradition so the parents from BOTH are relief that their son or daughter have someone to take care of each other. Asian parents want to see their kids (both male and female) married in life and in death. With that said, I do not agree on selling the deceased.

You don't just grief and move on, if it's that easy people won't be having PTSD and mental illnesses, in fact maybe these spiritual weddings are their way to grief and get closure. Even animals are known to grief for their dead, which means this is something that has been coded into animal DNA for millions of years. It's also really maddening to learn that women who people see as "less valuable" should be treated and sold like that. Sure, times are changing but it's still a long way to go. My mum is a neonatologist (doctor for newborn babies with problems) and she once was looking after this new born Chinese girl who had down syndrome. I don't remember the details, but I remember her telling me that one of the assistants, who was Chinese, told them not to send the baby back to her family, because it was likely that the grandmother would drown her. EDIT: checked with my mum; so the parents were very young, and didn't want the baby, so they were going to send her to their parents (her grandmother). The Chinese ambassador there was strongly against it because she thought the grandmother would drown the little girl. The baby ended up going to a foster home, my mum said that if they couldn't find anyone she would have adopted her and my dad agreed.

How to deal with a situational dillema like that? Yeah, it's possible that this could be a practice and there's historical context behind it, but how prove this will happen? There's so many repercussions that'll happen for not giving the baby to the family when there's no "legitimate" reason. It's something that hasn't happened yet, we just think it'll happen due to assuming. Especially hard for families that have no DV or CPS records because of the hush-hush culture.

Oof. It’s not fair to judge with our povs, because these kind of things happen because people know these children don’t have easy lives, and it’s kind of like a dog mom eating her weakest puppies to save the stronger ones. A "small evil for the greater good". And these practices are more common in very poor and third world countries where life truly is hard and weakness equals death. We are only able to see how horrible it is because we have extremely privileged lives where situations like that could never happen here. At least not for the same reasons. That’s why education is very important. People shouldn’t be blamed because of their ignorance, they should be taught.

There’s a story of a brother who went on a mission to find his sister after she was sold off, I believe Reddit helped him find her. There were a TON of mehn in the comments DEFENDING necrophilia, claiming that it wasn't a real crime, that we should accept it as an orientation, and/or that somehow mehn partaking in combat/war made assault of women's dead bodies a non-crime or non-issue. I suspect a few defenders of necrophilia were ex-soldiers who likely repped female's bodies in combat zones. I wish I was joking. There is no kind of torture of females that males will not engage in. Internet prawn normalizes torture and dehumanization of females, and many of them think of SA as a normal thing that should be fully legalized, if not encouraged.

Allegedly, when he was a kid, someone had forced him to marry this dead little girl (I don't remember the exact age but I think he was around 10 years old at this time and the dead girl was around his age I think). The people officiating this ceremony apparently forced him to kiss this dead girl after they got "married" and he claims that since then, she's been haunting him. Theoretically, this could've been the catalyst to his unhealthy relationship with the dead. MAYBE. but it was messed up fr.

Thank you for explaining this case to us. For some odd reason people love to hate & people love drama, involving themselves in drama even when they say they don't, they actually do. I really greatly appreciate Stephanie for the disclaimers on Asian culture. As an Asian myself, even though these particular customs are not a part of our country's culture, I could imagine how people from other parts of the world could misconstrue some Asian customs to be a bit backwards. I've never felt this feeling before, but the phrase "representation matters" was overwhelmingly running through my mind and in my heart. Thank you Stephanie, I appreciate that your delivery is not bystander-y, while at the same time giving emphasis on how the people involved in all the cases you cover are not a representation of the rest of the population.

I'm chinese and while these are all very disturbing I have a cool story about death marriage. My mom once told me that a friend of hers had a daughter that passed. One day, the daughter appeared in her parent's dream and told them " hey mom and dad, I met someone in the afterlife and we are in love. Can you guys please find him and give us a wedding ceremony?" Idk how, either she gave them his details or they posted it online or something, but eventually they found another set of parents who recently lost their son and also had a dream one night of their son telling them that he met a girl and wanted to marry her. The two parents got tgt and gave them a wedding ceremony. The end. I feel like it's true because my mom has no incentive to tell lies like this and I just thought its a cool story Edit, they did no re dig the bodies or do anything illegal, they just had a ceremony with either photos or ashes.

That's really interesting. I've never heard of ghost marriages before, but it intrigues me because I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints and we perform proxy ordinances for the dead like baptism. This practice sounds like a correlation to our belief that "what is bound on earth will be bound in heaven". I believe that there are core beliefs in every culture around the world about the spirit and these are truths God spoke to our ancients and the core beliefs have endured.

Love your storytelling! I am sad for Kitty. May she rest in peace! The ghost marriage thing is utterly wild. I understand that people grieve differently, but they do not have the right to make these decisions for the dead. I personally believe that in our afterlife, we may still have the choice to marry. In the end everyone can be believe what they want as long as it's not harmful to others and themselves. It's terrifying to see how people can make money on people's grief.

I remember there was a horror movie here in the Philippines literally titled "Ghost Bride". The actors were interviewed later on, and one of them apparently had a family member who actually became a ghost bride, but she was alive when she was paid to get married to a dead guy. The actor described that the arrangement was consensual, and the dead guy's family treated her aunt as an actual in-law. The actor also mentioned that the tradition is not present at this time anymore because it is illegal, so I'm shookt that some people are even making a business from selling ghost brides.
@peccatrix
@peccatrix Рік тому
On the topic of ghost marriages, there is a similar practice here in Romania, only people are not tricked into it. (Or sold...) When a young man or woman dies unwed (particularly if they also die known virgins), they might be buried in bridal attire; and a young person of the opposite sex who is also unwed might be "married" to them at the graveside by the priests to comfort the spirit and prevent lingering regrets. This young person is typically asked by the family to do this and they consent to it. Sometimes money changes hands for it, but often it’s just people doing it of their own volition because they were friends with the deceased, or want to help. Mostly it’s the peace of mind of the family they’re helping, of course, but, you know. As for Kitty: God, this poor girl. She only had shitty men in her life. I hope she has at last found peace. :(

I’ve actually heard about ghost marriages before, as there was a case in the show “Bones” that i used to watch. I explored a lot about it and it’s so much more frequent than we think. When exploring I found that sometimes they would share the deceased woman’s ashes throughout the family a few days prior to see if it brings them bad luck and if it will influence the deceased man.. As a test…

Sadly, these families feel so pressured to give their dead sons, very rarely daughters a marriage so they can be happy and not lonely. In the beginning, when babies, children, and teens often died young they could be partnered with a bride/groom usually once the dead children reached the age of marriage. It was sad as with these weddings both groom and bride are dead. Sometimes a man's wife, sister, or even daughter who dies and was beautiful could be purchased, it might be hard for him but it's targeted at those who aren't well off. So say you're in a car accident, your wife dies but your daughter was badly injured and needs expensive surgery, then you're contacted by a person wanting to buy your wife and are willing to pay for all the medical expenses and a larger sum to help care for the child. If you do a live ghost marriage, you are supposed to treat your ghost wife/husband as the principle/legitimate marital partner, for a year, then you may take a second bride/husband. (I believe they treat it like an annulment or something if you are a woman marrying a man who passed away, as it would be unkind for the woman to be tied to a man unable to have children).

This is really common in demographics where there are a lot of chinese immigrants or descendants of, usually rich ones, all around the world. I've heard about this a couple of times growing up. Ngl it was creepy at first, but as news traveled social media and news, news comes up of ghost marriages every couple of years. Sometimes dead bodies where trafficked, others live ghost marriages that pays pretty pennies. I've also watched Bones on disney+. T'was a good show, the anticipation for the romance of the main leads was great. Oh, and they also showed the shipping of foreign wives to usa for 20k, the fetization of cultures and objectification of women was shown. Not gonna judge the women or people in these cases, they just want better opportunities to help themselves and their family. I'm just gonna raise an eyebrow to these kinds of businesses and people who use their services.
