I once found myself in a friend's appartment as 3 guys started breaking down the door. There were 4 of us in the couch at the time, we had all done some martial arts and in the room with us were a sword, an executioner's axe from the 1600's with actual souls in it, a baseball bat and a hammer. I am someone who cannot legally own a firearm . My 4foot oak closet rod, i keep by my door is my weapon of choice, and it has served me well. I spent 3 years of my life studying traditional Wah Lum Kungfu, including specifically staff and spear drills, so this little piece of closet rod is the weapon I am most proficient in. I have already used it during a home invasion, to great effect. I am very very aware things could have gone poorly for me ,but as far as my options go, this is my best one.

Late on this but I love your point about the kitchen knife. Knives are scary, messy, personal, etc. There’s no scenario where my mom has an intruder in her home and goes “okay I’ll go to kitchen, grab a giant knife, and now I’m gonna stab a violent crazy guy up close an personal” and that ends up well for her.

The best melee weapon for home-defence in my opinion is a spear. In my country guns are very hard to get and it is illegal to get a license for self-defence so alot of people rely on melee weapons. People make their own spears with a broom handle, kitchen knife and duct tape then place it beside them when they sleep. The spear is a perfect and unusual home defence weapon in my opinion because it is easy to thrust a spear in a hallway but it is difficult to swing a machete or a bat. It creates great distance which would he hard to close and it has been proven as one of the most effective weapons through history.

Was a foil fencer for several years on and off so one of my favorite home defense weapons is my colichemarde. It is definitely not my first pick for a good practical weapon but it is my favorite, especially since its the only weapon I'm well trained to use.

Always nice to see others who think of a tomahawk, when a gun might not be a viable option. Most people don't consider the issue of missed shots, and the walls they will penetrate. A nice ash or hickory axe handle. Available in different lengths. I keep one that's midway between a hatchet handle and a full size axe handle. Can be used with one hand. Light but very hard.

A high intensity flashlight shone in the eyes, and a 2 foot long sharp instrument (sharpened dandelion picker, lance, pitchfork) that can be handled with one hand, thrust point forward into vital area, is lethal, and impossible to block.

Something worth noting with axes, weapon axes and tool axes have very different heads - weapon axes always have much smaller, lighter heads, for more speed, and will still deal some serious damage. Tool axes with larger heads are able to have larger ones, because they don't need to be used with any real speed or sense of urgency. Sure, it'd really suck to get hit by one, if you survived, but a weapon axe is ready to swing again before you've even stopped the swing of a splitter or something like that

Sir, I've watched many of your wonderful and well thought out videos, and I am absolutely a fan of your work. My background is Taekwondo many-many years ago and later in my life (what I've come to believe is the more effective systems of Kali and Silat). From years of learning about anatomy and physiology and combining this knowledge with Kali and Silat, and understanding that the blade does not have to be large at all (however a very pointy and very sharp blade is always a good thing), and placement is also an extremely important thing. Combining knowledge, commitment to the defense, and training can absolutely be a devastating combination. There are many places on the human body where the puncture [with a jagged cut] does not have to be very-very deep at all to cause sufficient permanent damage to cause the attacker to stop what he is doing and wonder where his next breath is coming from, or wait....wait...I'm loosing consciousness due to blood loss...um...what...and then the lights go dark type of thing. I absolutely understand that no one is just going to let you do these things, but all I am saying is, if they are in your house and are going to kill you anyway, you absolutely have to do the things that you have been training to do for years and years, and you cannot hesitate, or your loved ones will absolutely be next. This mindset (from a front-line type of theater...I believe) is extremely necessary because these types of intruders in ones home ABSOLUTELY mean you harm (permanent harm), and I truly believe that hesitation can be the end of you and your loved ones. Commitment to an explosive defense (even if I am killed in the defense of my family) is super-super important. After all, what is the alternative, the annihilation of my family??? With these types of things in mind, my training over the many-many years has been very-very realistic and NOT point based.....at all...because in the real world, I'm well aware of the fact that you get ONE chance, and one chance only to save your loved ones (and this is NOT a [macho man] garbage thing ....at all). The WW2 Smatchet knife, the Anelace dagger, the Cinquedea dagger… Lots of people saying gladius I see also which would be a little longer, but indoors or tight areas, I’d go with one of those three instead, even gladius could be a little tougher if you get into wrestling. The three daggers I mentioned are short enough you could still stab with any position and long enough to have reach over a ka-bar. The smatchet may be outreached by a longer machete, but it’s beastly thrusting power and purposeful design for trenches, alleys, and bunkers make it crazy powerful.

You're right, most people don't realise how close and personal it is to use a knife on someone, and you have to persist at it. Stabbing someone is very emotional. It's nothing like the speed and distance of coldly shooting someone with a nice handgun. What you should remember with any weapon is, if you fail to use it, they will likely use it on you.

At a yard sale I picked up a very small gardening shovel. It is long enough for me to stay away from an attacker. It is now sharp enough to shave with. I image I could swing it, but a thrust to the neck , leg or anywhere, would work well. It is in my bedroom. I also have a roofing hammer, similar to the small hand axe shown. Answering as requested. I am in the bathroom and I'd use broom. It is essentially a staff, even if it is a little too brittle. I can use it to manage distance from the attacker, who is unlikely to be unarmed and can safely attack with the tip, even though my skills in martial arts are quite limited. It will be troublesome to use it in the only cornering room exit in my house, but, I figure, if I made the assailant cower behind a corner - job is already done

If I’m in my kitchen, a chunky water glass or a ramekin is a pretty good weapon. A metal spatula is pretty good. A soup can is pretty painful but limited reload capacity. A thin necked vase is very wieldy. A small cast iron pan is scary. A long remote control can be used as a yawara stick. a large pepper mill is meant to be held and can be used as a hammer. A wrench is very painful, has a weighted end and a handle. I also would recommend having a leather strap on your weapon handle to keep on your wrist so it’s hard to lose.

Definitely a video on home invasion defence or strategy, maybe a distracting technique to allow loved ones an escape. Perhaps good defensible areas or barricading yourself in safely, just some ideas to spitball. Love your vids however, keep up the great content!

UK based, bedroom, got some options we've placed around in here, all melee due to UK laws. Most expensive stuff is upstairs, to get it, intruders gotta break in through some of the noisiest entry points ever, go up a steep, narrow ass set of stairs, and fight a literal psychopath with an array of melee options, an early cold war era combat helmet, some stab resistant gear, and a thick ass trench coat which is also pretty stab resistant. Trained? Eh, kinda, few years of informal stuff with people who've had extensive formal training, kinda weak and slow these days though. Thoughts?

I'm in my living room/kitchen and I would either use a kitchen knife or a fire place poker. The poker is in reach of where I am sitting, the kitchen knife I would have to walk about 10 paces to get to. As I third option I have 6 chairs I could throw at them. Right at this second there is also a frying pan sitting on the stove, but usually to access that I would have to rummage through a cupboard. If the attacker entered either through the front door or window I would have access to the back door where I know there is an axe leaning against the wall and that would be my favorite if I could get to it.

On my key chain I have a Swiss army knife. I picked a model with a largish blade that has a loop that let's you open the blade with your thumb while holding the knife. I live in a country where guns are illegal. I think anything larger would get caught on walls and doors. I'm afraid that blunt force weapons like a bat or truncheon will either be too long (and so have the same issue that longer weapons have with getting caught on stuff) or the guys will just be too strong and absorb the blows.

I'm trained in Fairburn Sykes, and Tai chi...so I really know how to fight well in a confined space. My go to weapon is a yawara stick, I often carry a pair of them around. The thing you want, 1 dominate the fight 2 end the fight 3 no mess...blood everywhere. Yawara is the only weapon that fulfils this...walking stick is a close second. I have never seen a barfight with a yawara last more than 4 seconds.

Petrol chainsaw. That would put any intruder off when they hear that starting up.

There is an automotive tire tool, with a pry bar one side, and a large rubber (mallet) knob on the opposite. This would be my go to on a one handed close in fighting item to wield.

Physical conditioning is probably the most important in self defense. Even if you have a weapon you will need to be strong enough to strike with enough force to defend yourself.

I took a branch from a oak tree carved, sanded, and filled the business end with chopped up tire weights. Creating a homemade loaded billy club so it hits a lot harder. I also made a trench club out of pipe and a old shovel handle.

Long handle shovel x 2, one in garage attached to house near front entry, one in walk in robe behind my bed, machette under mattress I sleep on, 40 lb recurve bow and arrows behind bed, extremely bright led light on bedside table, front door triple locked and 75 mm screws in front door frame and security door fixings. a walking cane handy too. Dog sleeps in house too. Cast iron fry pan in kitchen and kitchen knives. Wasp spray with long spray stream in bedroom handy too. Australia here too, I don't have guns anymore.

A few weeks ago I decided to practice throwing an axe with my brother… for self defense. I have the same throwing tomahawk you have, the black one. I threw it at a tree and it ricocheted and hit my leg, very close to an artery. Long story short, I wasn’t as dangerous as I thought i was. Loved this video and all the tips!

I keep a hickory axe handle next to the bed, next to the couch, and in my main hallway. Plus I have a rack with three sticks on it in the living room and one of those is a hickory axe handle as well. Hoping that means I have a weapon at hand at all times.

The Romans used the gladius because they trained in close formation drill with little slashing room. They realized that they needed to train recruits quickly, and thrusting is the easiest method of drill. Slashing in a tight battle was exhausting and required much more strength to accomplish a really effective blow. The quick thrust was effective in such scenarios, as it would be in house hallway, or in any house where the ceiling would interfere with a powerful slashing motion. The Romans knew close combat better than anyone. Downside is no shield, so, I would suggest the short spear of the Zulus, the assagai. Meant to be a stand-off thrusting spear - not for throwing. Can be used one handed, but two hands would increase control and power multi-fold, while remaining at least arms length away. Cold Steel makes a version of both. The assagai is really a long-handled version of the Roman gladius. The short scale bat is one of my personal favs. Mine is aluminum, and is lightning quick, with minimal chance of a hang up while swinging it. And, yes, the machete can be very effective if it's not too long. I cut mine down to a 12" blade and carved a pinky hook for grip retention when swinging. I use it in camp, but it has its place in my plan at home. That said, I don't favor any slashing, swinging weapon over the thrusting weapon. Nothing can defeat the quick thrust with a weapon designed for that purpose. The machete is not a thrusting blade, neither is a bat or baton Best defense is to be prepared by securing your entries. Become a difficult target.

As a carpenter the straight claw hammer is a favorite. Also when I was a kid our home was broken into while we were home my dad laid 3 guys out with a hot skillet (he was cooking at the time). So it definitely will work.

Bedroom, a sleep, and the only option is a knife, large Mag-light and my hands given Australia’s legislation. The choice comes down to the situation and situational awareness. The Mag-light’s mass means that it is more unwieldy than a bladed weapon. However, if it’s dark, the light-blindness can allow an initial advantage. One item not raised is that it’s always beneficial to have options, akin to the phrase, “different horses for different courses”. Think of it like Rock-Paper-Scissors. You don’t know in-advance what your adversary might have, and you’ll have a split second to determine and acquire what is your best option given the circumstances.

My improvised weapon would be a 1.5' long metal pipe that links my tricep dip station into one solid piece. It's not as great as a gun or knife, but it's solid, and I can swing it hard as shit. I certainly wouldn't want to be hit by it.

can't have guns here and i am a kalista and have knives all over the house but considering my training and environment, i decided to go with a 13 inch bowie as my primary home defense weapon. its short enough to swing in hallway, long enough to look scary and heavy enough and sharp enough to take off a hand, and if you take off a guy's hand i'm pretty sure that it will cause them and anyone with them to reconsider. although have been thinking about replacing it with a set of sharp combat grade wing chun butterfly swords cause if one big knife is good, two is better

Desk lamp is interesting. Its somewhat heavy and can be used to stun the attacker, and has a cable that you can use to disarm or choke them... Basically anything that has some weight to it can be used as non-lethal weapon --Bass guitar is heavy and can be used like spear to stun...

Living in Germany. What I noticed living in Mexico and the U.S.: Your doors really are bad. I mean, no offence but here we have solid doors with 3 bolts in the top, middle and bottom. These are already not easy to kick in. I myself have a baton and a strong flash light beside my bed. I just don’t like the idea having to come close to an invader or burglar. Anyways, best safety is to relay on reinforced doors and windows, plus a strong flashlight which you could use for hitting too...

I have a strobe flash light, and pepper spray and something I am pretty proficient with called a Jo staff. When used properly, it can be used in close quarters. You can use protracing and retractable moves with it. It's fast and hard to grab. And, yes, there are gnarly things one can do to your attacker if they get hold of it. But you gotta know how to use one. It's the size of a standard walking stick.

Home invaded a while ago when a "visitor" knocked on the front door I didn't want to answer the door. Next thing he's shoulder barged the back door, fell on the floor, looked up at me, said sorry then ran off jumping over a 6 foot fence without issue. Thieves want stuff easily without the fight usually. Good home defence could be as easy as locking internal doors between rooms. My house was broken into but all the downstairs doors are locked. They got into the kitchen. They got nothing. But locking doors while you're in isn't ideal.

Besides chef knives, I have a small bat that I made during a wood shop class in the 90s. I call it The Learning Stick. That's my go-to for home-defense. That said, in any given scenario especially out in public, I'd go for a fire extinguisher. Edit: I have that same knife you showcased as an example. Trouble is it's roughly 12000 miles away at the cabin.
