Rubinstein is probably Chopin greatest 20th. century interpreter but along his masterful recordings, as far as the Nocturnes are concerned a trio of french pianists did attain a comparable perfection: Alfred Cortot, Samson Francois, and the unforgettable and miraculous Brigitte Engerer.

This is the most extraordinary collection of Chopin's Nocturnes every recorded up to this point in time, second only to Ivan Moravec's "channeled" performance of these Nocturnes. I love listening to them both. And it always makes me a little sad to remember that we lost her far too early. What an authority her spirit carried in this world. The word "definitive" comes to mind.
