I didn't buy the @ChopsGarage Nissan Micra, but what did I make of this lunatic Japanese turbocharged mini people carrier thing? Yes, it's a Daihatsu YRV Turbo 130 with compulsory automatic - with steering wheel gearchange buttons! Would this be the car for me?

I used that car and loved that car. The reason it's switching to automatic is this: You are forgetting to lower the gear when it is time to do so. It's fun to delay switching to a higher gear reaching higher RPMs but everyone forgets to lower the gear and that's when the car takes over. Also, you missed all the fun bits about that transmission. You should have floored it when it was cruising at 4th gear at around 45 km/h and watch it switch directly to 1st gear from 4th and give you some serious acceleration. Or reaching to 120 kmh in 2nd and 190 kmh in 3rd gear. One of the most fun cars I ever owned. Still has a model of it on top of my desk. Also, UK model seems to not have some accessories my model had. So, I guess you didn't see the best of it. Plus the functions of the back seat of that car are legendary. There is even a function for merging front and back seats and laying everything down to convert it to a car-sized bed. I am not making any of this up :) The reason the suspension is super stiff is hidden on how narrow and how high that car is. It must be stiff to having better safety on corners. It's for young people who want a fast, small, fun, multi-functional city car.

The YRV Turbo only comes with auto box is simply because no Daihatsu manual box at that time can handle the torque of this K3-VET turbo engine. Back in my hometown Hong Kong I know some guys actually swapped manual gearbox into these or in the other way around, swapping the turbo engine into a manual Sirion (Yes YRV, Sirion and Cuore are using the same platform and their mechanical components are interchangeable), eventually the manual box will blow especially if driven hard.
@HubNut
@HubNut Рік тому
Yet I believe the engine is closely related to the Glanza, which was available with a manual...
@ericericeric888
@ericericeric888 Рік тому
@@HubNut Starlet Glanza uses the 4E-FTE engine while YRV Turbo is using the K3-VET engine. There are obvious differences between the two such as 4E-FTE is cam belt driven while K3-VET is chain driven. Actually YRV turbo’s engine is much more related to 1st gen Yaris rather than to Glanza. And this turbo engine is exclusively developed and used on YRV Turbo from factory. Daihatsu seemed to love doing crazy stuffs during that era, the most famous one was the Storia X4(1st gen Sirion in JDM form) which has a 713cc engine (developed from their Kei car engine) with a huge turbo putting out 120ps.

I agree with you. I like, with a sporty car, having a manual box. I loved that the Skoda Fabia vRS Mk1 was such a surprise - it was fast, fun, and surprisingly a diesel with torque that came in wallops - then couldn't believe it when the MK2 became an auto petrol. It removed all that made it special. I do still love a quirky small car though

The Monte Carlo edition Fabia's seem to be the compromise to having a decent manual gearbox sporty Skoda. My brother has a 2015 version and its good but for a special edition the drivers seat is already wearing through and some of the leather trim on the gear knob and hand brake don't look the best either, whereas my older 2013 SEAT Ibiza built on the same platform and similar spec to his car has not suffered the same interior woes.

It was unusual to say the least. Using the gearshift on steering wheel was a little diff as the buttons are to small and had to feel around for em sometimes. Some times the gearbox would clonk into action from a standing start big time. My ex fancied a change after 10 yrs, and cos it needed a whole new exhaust and poss a manifold, I sold it . Regarding the stubborn gearbox, I do find with my '01 Lexus GS300 (that also has manu-matic up and down buttons on the steering wheel) that I only use manual mode for short bursts, when accelerating onto a fast road or overtaking - all other times it's strictly in automatic. Then again, it would be infuriating if the car chose when to shift back into auto, so I get your frustrations.

My daily car is a Fiat Doblo with a (slightly tickled) 1.4 Turbo engine. Can't say I agree that a sporty engine in a practical car doesn't match, I'm having a laugh with mine quite often. It is a 6-speed manual though and the turbocharger is smaller than the one used in Abarth models, so there's a hint of boost starting at 1600rpm, boost really kicks in somewhere between 2000 and 2500rpm, and it gives its full potential up to about 4000-4500rpm. It does rev beyond 6k rpm, but unlike the real Abarths that's only useful if you want to reach a certain speed/point before shifting or when wringing out a bend (bi-link rear suspension, quite unique on a van, and I put a set of alloys and sporty 235/45/17 tyres on it, so it corners stable at surprising speeds), but there's always a gear to be right in the middle of the powerband at any legal speed, I even think its a 6-speed only for marketing reasons because I often skip 3rd and 5th when accellerating without revving beyond or dropping below the powerband. It sounds like the turbo in the YRV is simply too big and the gearing is spread out too far to make it work.
@matthewblundell9119
@matthewblundell9119 Рік тому
Certainly was a surprising conclusion - The "fizzy" engine I thought would have been a hit (and was - if not for being overshadowed by the dumb autobox). I wonder why automatic only - were Daihatsu lacking a manual 'box capable of handling the torque? Or was it really a JDM market type affair where they seem to prefer autos even on what would normally be a default manual choice in the UK (e.g. auto MX5 seems popular import, but seems mad choice - not to have a manual to my eyes!) I'd have thought the turbo lag would have been tolerable, were you to have a manual and hence able to keep the revs up (and hence minimise the lag) when required. Your frustration at the combined effect of dumb 'box and the lag was understandable. I wonder if the poor rear headroom is trim level specific - i.e. is the pocket in the headlining, to suit the sliding cover for the fixed glass moon (??) roof - the reason for the poor headroom in the back? Have to say dead lifeless steering, flimsy rattly interior and to an extent overly hard suspension were all a surprise. If only there were hundreds of these sold and hence that 1.3 turbo engine was commonly available in the scrapyards - swapping that into your Charade (and keeping it's manual 'box) would then have been an obvious choice! Enjoyable video (and please don't read that as "I enjoyed laughing at your frustration" !!)

@Leon-uj7pc
@Leon-uj7pc Рік тому
Shame it is a automatic only. I am guessing it is auto only for emissions purposes. With an auto transmission, a car maker can program a bunch of parameters that could not be done on a manual car. It might also be to protect the engine from over revs if the wrong gear is shifted in (like going to down shift from 5th to 4th and you accidently put it in 2nd). Of course having driven manual trans cars for years in the Washington DC area, i was quite happy to give up the manual trans for an automatic. We in the USA only got an SUV called the Rocky and the 3rd gen Charade (from 88-92) and then Daihatsu rolled out of the USA market. Daihatsu were more expensive then the Dodge/Plymouth Colt (rebadged Mitsu Mirage) which were big sellers and were fun to drive (I had a 2001 Mirage coupe with the manual trans and it was fun to drive around corners)

It's difficult to believe it's 20 years since my wife bought a "Premium" YRV with delivery mileage from a used car supermarket for £6000 .We found the back seat to be roomy enough for the pub run, with more leg room than the Punto it replaced. As an aside Ihe Punto was a sort of mini MPV it being an update of the Uno, which I think took inspiration from the Lancia Mega Gamma. Our YRV had a cloth parcel shelf akin to a sun screen, this allowed the back seat to be pushed back and reclined . It was totally reliable in the four years we kept it and it sipped fuel, I remember thinking at the time that there was no way the chassis could handle a turbo It was more than fast enough as standard,. It was buzzy, flimsy feeling, hard riding even though I think the suspension was a little softer than this, and could be skittish; so not something to take out of town but great fun away from A roads..

Lol .I owned the boggo standard version of this. Brought for £500 as a stop gap. Drove for 3 years , never changed the oil, never needed to fill it with oil or water in 50k miles. I’d still be driving it now if a lorry wouldn’t have hit it while parked. Insurance gave me £875! Oh it was terrible on windy days, like a roller coaster!

I'd really like to see a test drive of the 4WD if you can get your mitts on one.

I heard it said that suspension technology is what makes it possible to make higher cars. I think no, they just made them firmer and hoped the buyers would get used to it.

Quite a quirky little car that YRV, bit wierd to have a car with an auto box if it's meant to be sporty, least it's got a manual mode. Also a Berlingo update, we've now got a radio in it and currently in the process of fitting some new speakers, it's doing a run to Doncaster on Saturday so we'll see what motorway driving is like in it (all 68bhp of it 🤣)

It's a great looking funky little car, bit with too many idiosyncrasies. I couldn't live with that suspension and the 'manual' gearshift is almost as bad as the one on my Lexus! The only clincher for me would be the a/c.

Nice review. Seems more of a MCM car than a Hubnut one.

I hope you weren’t seriously thinking of getting g rid of the Berlingo for one of these cars. You need it as an economical tow vehicle which it seems to do quite well.

It’s such a cheeky looking little thing. Shame about the gear box and the ride. My dad ordered a new 2001 BMW X5 with the 4.4 v8 and sport suspension. He commented several times that it was ridiculously firm for the type of car that it was. I think it was returned at lease end with no regrets.
