I just want to take some time to thank you for this video. I keep coming back to this every time I finish a project that needs stems delivered. It has saved my ass on many occasions. Thank you so much!!

Thank you for this! I've been reading about this technique, but it really helps to see it in action.

Gracias Mihkel!!! Thank you very much. Great tutorial! Maybe more than Film Scoring, it can be applied for Audio in Web applications like social media, youtube if the client ask for Stems; where you need some limiting and overall compression in order to get some level depending on the LUFS Normalization standards.

This Video has been a real life saver after frantically tying to work out how to achieve these results with my stem masters - Thank you so much for all your instruction, it is highly appreciated!

Thanks for the video Mihkel, it was very helpful! Do you have any suggestions for those of us who are used to putting limiters and mastering plugins on the final Stereo Out? Is there a way to incorporate that process into this workflow? It was nice being able to boost the gain on a single limiter on the Stereo Out if the track was mixed too quietly, for instance
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 4 роки тому
Thanks! A good way to do this (in Cubase / Nuendo) is to select all the SideChain channels, right click to Link Selected Channels and make sure Inserts is active. Now if you tweak one limiter, for example to add gain, all other limiters will do the same.

we certainly dont use this in film! Maybe once in a thousand productions for those rare films that require hard limited music. Generally, stay well away from mix bus limiting and compression although this is a great explanation of the technique. Netflix and Acorn kick back on hard limited and overly loud mixes for score.
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 3 роки тому
Thank you! I also never use anything on the mix bus, and instead think of the stem busses as multiple mix busses, and any final processing will happen there. Nor do I hard limit, quite the opposite - modest levels and ample headroom on all stems, the limiters are more like a failsafe to catch the loudest peaks and bring them down a db or two.

Do you know how to do it with more than 8 stems, since you only have 8 sends in cubase per track?
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 4 роки тому
Sure, what I do is create a second SideChain channel, set the ouput of SideChain 1 to SideChain 2 (and disable the output of SideChain 2). Now you have 2 identical Sidechains, and access to 16 sends.

@@mihkelzilmer I tried doing this with 13 stems, but I end up with peaking in my full mix. This works great with 8 or less for me, though. Am I missing a step?
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 3 роки тому
@@Smashbuttons Can't say without seeing your routing setup, but I am using this with 10-12 stems and no issues..

Hey, is this still needed or can i just use the new stem exporting feature in cubase 11? will it have the same effect?
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 3 роки тому
Hi, I have not tested it myself, but according to this forum thread the new export features do not have the same functionality, that is they can not hear the entire mix while bouncing through master bus FX. vi-control.net/community/threads/cubase-11-master-bus-stems.100966/ So yes, the side-chain structure is still needed if you want this function.

How does this work with reverb busses. Do i have to send these to the sidechain channel too?
@mihkelzilmer
@mihkelzilmer 3 роки тому
Hi Thomas, I use 1 (sometimes 2) reverbs per stem, so 10-20 reverbs total, inserted on FX busses. Dry signal is sent from tracks to these FX busses and then routed back into the stem. So the stem is where dry+wet signals combine, limiting happens afterwards. I never want them separated for delivery, but if you are having to deliver reverb separately, then it's a whole other story...
@scoremix8556
@scoremix8556 3 роки тому
as Mihkel says - reverb per group or stem.
@TimSFischer
@TimSFischer 2 роки тому
@@mihkelzilmerThat. Or If you use a "one reverb/tail for everything" setup or simply wanna seperate the reverb from your orchestral stems (which makes sense in trailer music sometimes), you could do it this way: - Create two groups: "Reverb" and "STEM Reverb". Route the Output(!) of all Reverb FX groups you use to the "Reverb" group. On the Reverb Group, send the signal to the Sidechain Mix Limiter aswell and route the output(!) to the "STEM Reverb" group.
