The Civil war is apolitical, because it's based on an average western person perception of all these wars in the world that you hear about on the news. Complex conflict on ethnic, political, societal, religious and economic grounds that are just reduced to "people are just fighting the goverment because it's bad." It's a movie made from the ignorant perspective of the media that just boiled down conflicts across the globe to nothingness, like the Syrian civil war. It doesn't matter who the sides are, just that war is bad and people die in it.

Civil War confused the shit out of me because I walked out of it having taken away the message “journalists like those depicted in this film are vultures who prey upon misery and bloodshed to advance their own careers/egos/desire for thrills, and only by taking a stance, by doing more than being a neutral observer, can they hope to save lives.” … I then read Alex Garland’s comments on his own movie, where he stated he wanted to make a film where journalists are the heroes, and that he thinks journalists should be neutral. I had a feeling Civil War was gonna play it safe. Seems like a movie that could have been made in the 2000s and I'm actually fine with it. When I found out the plot for Civil War would not be about actual political and social tensions within the US, but instead an alternate reality where they can just dance around the actual reasons a lot of insane people in my country want to murder each other, my immediate thought was "So it's Far Cry 5 again". Just a politically toothless narrative that uses a genuinely interesting setup to do anything but address the implications of that setup.

I mean, I didn’t mind, and I expected that. DMZ is a fantastic comic about a 2nd civil war in an alternate America where people create a rebel faction over the country going downhill in general. The point is that the reasons for the war don’t matter, the politics behind the war didn’t mean anything to me when I was walking through alleyways in Afghanistan I think Civil War missed its mark because although it’s a movie about journalists, you learn nothing about any of the people in this war or what’s going on. You can criticize the ways they tried to deliver that message and it's not like they were subtle about it, but I don't think they made a mistake at all by trying to make the exact causes ambiguous and separated from any parallels that are too obvious. Sad that Garland probably got held back - I imagine it probably wasn’t him deciding to avoid uncomfortable situations, based on his previous directing and writing work. Annihilation and Dredd are huge favourites of mine precisely because they weren’t creatively smothered. Squandered resources to make something without sharp edges like Civil War.

Civil War makes me roll my eyes, I can't shake the feeling that it's like they wanted to capitalize on that insane time period from 2016 to 2021 where everyone was losing their shit over politics, but it's already 2024. Too with Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea constantly poking us with a stick saying "come on, do a civil war already", the timing is still as cringe as if it came out in 2016.

I was in the express line for Monkey Man and saw you walking by to the end. I was like "holy shit that's YMS" and no one else knew who you were lol. Sorry you couldn't see it, lines were fucking long for SXSW this year. Also, I kinda liked the subversion of Civil War being less about politics and more of a commentary/celebration/love letter to war/combat photojournalism. It was very much the vibe of "this is what is happening currently overseas" with the set piece being the US. I feel like part of the point was to maintain a sense of neutrality from the POV for the photojournalists. I think the overall moral was left up in the air but the line where Kirsten Dunst is like "we don't do anything about this, we take pics so other people can do something about it" was definitely there to provoke discussion on the ethics of combat photojournalism. I had a friend who had a similar take as you though, and felt a bit disappointed or that it was a missed opportunity that they did not go political with it, but I think that was part of the point.

I actually really enjoyed that America was meerly a backdrop in Civil War. I loved that it was more about the dangers of war photography and could focus on the characters rather than the implications and motives of the war itself. It feels like whoever made it really wanted to make a war photography film first, and the idea of it being set in the US was secondary, which i enjoyed personally. War films really impact me for some reason, and I was 100% locked in the whole film. Personally it was 10/10 for me, the best film Ive gone to see in theaters in a long time.

I watched Civil War last week. I think the main characters are definitely the worst part of the film, but I also think there is something to be said about journalists being the lens through which all of us observe conflicts, safe from it all, on our wide screens, in our airconditioned houses. There is a parallel between that relationship and the relationship between the 4 "little turds" and the movie's audience. I also take issue with the criticism that the message of "war bad" is a shallow one. It's not just "War Bad". It's also "how do you feel now that all those conflicts that you have been observing from the safety of western prosperity finally come to your lawn?". The fact that many of the reviews I have seen so far get hung up on the Texas-California Alliance shows me that we care less about the very basic horrors of such a conflict than we let on.

Your description of Sasquatch Sunset reminds me of one of my dad's favorite movies, Quest for Fire. It's about neanderthal cavemen going on a journey to find more fire after the one they had blows out. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember it being a bit gross with a sex scene, and I don't think there's any dialogue at all, since the cavemen haven't developed a spoken language yet. Sounds like it could be a similar experience of a movie.

You know, "fighting each other is bad" is pretty much exactly the message that americans need. It sounds ridiculous to everyone else, but few other 1st world countries have that level of patriotism. The choices that Alex Garland took, seem very intentional to me. He pretty much wants to bring this message without hitting anyone over the head with it and that is a very difficult task for a writer/director...

Honestly the recent trailers for Civil War were starting to kill my enthusiasm cause I thought it was going to be the opposite of your description. The fact Garland is staying away from specific groups and focusing on the reality of Civil Conflict in a nation that prides itself on Unification makes me want to see it. You really shouldn't be cheering for anyone, because the situation itself would have a horrendous human cost most being collateral. Kirsten kind of sounds very similar to reporters I met in conflict zones, caring more about their shots than ones coming at them. Sounds like this has something for everyone of the political spectrum, Im sure they'll be many left, right, and center memes this summer using it's characters.

17:52 Interesting take that you’ve got there, Adam, because while I understand that Civil War may seem more appealing to a wider audience, I really don’t think it’s at the cost of challenging the audiences about political stances, as it focuses more on our processing of violence we see on screen. (SPOILERS) Spaeny and Dunst’s character arcs show how we could be desensitized by the violence we see on screen and want to see every gory bit of it. There’s also the scene with Jesse Plemons where he interrogates the journalists to see if they’re “American” and shoots people when they confess that they aren’t, serving as a litmus test to determine if the audience takes the violence seriously.

Just watched Civil War - SPOILERS. I actually thought with the POV being entirely on the ground of the war it was smart to not explain the factions ideologies. In fact it seemed a point that once the war gets up close it doesn’t matter what the reason for it is. And the people they ran into often echoed this, saying couldn’t care less who they were fighting - that sniper over there wants to kill me and I want to kill him. Leaving it unsaid was cool with me and if there was a clear good guys vs bad guys it would have been less interesting to me. But I agree with your thoughts on the characters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But yeah, I felt like the point of Civil War was to show how civilians are affected the most in war-torn counties. Haiti is an unfortunate example, for instance. It doesn't matter what each side believed in, cause the fog of war had blinded everyone at that point. [ACTUAL SPOILERS: Hence why you saw Todd wear red sunglasses shooting up civilians. The literal fog of war blinded him. War had broken him, and many others in their country] Like with many 3-world countries, America was facing a war of two sides vying for power, not necessarily a war of ideology. Most civil wars are like that. Heck, Caesar crossed the Rubicon river because he didn't want to face prosecution, not because he was trying to "save the republic". And, like with most civil wars, the civilians were the affected the most.

Sounds like, without seeing the movie and going on what Adam said alone, the film would've been better as a mockumentary in this war torn alternate America. Kirsten Dunst already plays a war photographer/reporter, just make her a camera man with a first person perspective. Would've felt more grounded, understand the world and it's people more, and making more of a point with an outsider looking in via Alex Garland being English. Seems like this is A24's attempt to produce more commercial films, as they've stated they wanted/needed to do, due to recent losses in the box office. One of these being "Waves" an incredible film that had a $3.4 million net loss and "Beau is Afraid" being a $24.5 million dollar net loss. Sucks to have to cater to a world where a film like "Madame Web" has a net profit of $19.3 million dollars.

Ok, so I finally watched Civil War, and my thought on the lack of context to the war is that it was purposely done not to avoid controversy, but to show the absurdity of war, in which at one point different ideologies and political stances simply don't matter anymore: it's like those snipers at the Christmas fair say, "they're shooting us, we're shooting them". Even the different sides of the war seem to have been purposely conceived to sound absurd (soooo many comments in the trailers laughing at an alliance between California and Texas). It reminded me in a way of Robocop, which takes place in what at the time was seen as an absurd future with Detroit at the brink of bankrupcy to discuss topics of capitalism and police violence.

I saw Civil War in theaters today and was blown away. The most I have been impacted in a theater seat in years and Im not even from the US. Amazingly shot and amazing sound design. Many scenes had me on the edge of my seat. And Adam kinda misunderstood some things in my opinion. The film feels apolotical because it's meant to represent what we see every day on the news. Conflict in nations far away from the western world were people die horribly and we have no idea what is really going on. That's why theres also scenes of that in flashbacks in the movie of the protagonists carreer. The movie is summed up perfectly by the dialogue between the characters and the two snipers on the road. Why does it matter which side you are on? What matters is there's a person in the house ahead shooting at you, and you wanna shoot them.

Imma be honest I'm afraid to see civil war because the clips for it so far looks like it contains a major pet peev of mine. I fixate on little visual details a lot, and a big thing for me is whether or not soldiers in movies look like they're kitted out for the setting they're in. I'm not a tactical expert but like, even I know the soldiers carry equipment first aid, spare ammunition, side arms, sometimes hundreds of pounds worth of stuff. It's situational, it highly depends on where they are and what they're doing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb when it's obvious that the creative team didn't even think about it. So like when that Phillip Seymour Hoffman lookalike is standing there with the red glasses on, the man's got fatigues and his rifle. That's it. No additional kit, no spare mags, no body armor, side arm, water bottle nothing. Like even if he's supposed to be some rando that stole fatigues and a gun and is pretending to be a solider, the man would have some kind of equipment if he was in the world we're supposed to think he is. My man looks like an actor on a set, not a fighter in a war.

not every soldier is the same, especially if they are kitted out by these fictional state alliances. Could also just be people in local militias. Again, this is my pet peeve, it's personal, it's irrational, and there's nothing you can do about it.
