Fun fact: [QUESTION] was originally intended to be about the Decembrists, but [AUTHOR] realized he couldn't tell the story of the Decembrists without first giving the background of the Napoleonic wars. That slowly ballooned until [QUESTION] became a stand-alone book. A book about the Decembrists was started but never finished.

I had the same reaction, too. I had my response down two possibilities. I thought about Oliver Twist. Then, I was thinking it could not be a Dickens novel. With about 7 to 8 seconds left, I went with "What is War & Peace?" I then said, "Try it." I was shocked that I got the right response tonight.

I also should've thought of that. I knew Decembrists were in Russia, but I never got to like their literature - be it Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky or anyone else, I couldn't even force myself through any.

War and Peace didn't even cross my mind. First ones I thought of were Les Mis, The Tale of Two Cities and even The Man in The Iron Mask. But once the correct response was revealed it dawned on me that the Decembrists were the name of the revolutionaries in Tzarist Russia

@andrewklang809

The Decembrist Revolt is something worth looking into, and never gets talked about (even the winner here seemed to have guessed it). It was an early attempt to limit absolute rule in Russia, almost a century before the big Russian Revolution(s). The kind of government they wanted to create was arguably more liberal than what Russia has nowadays. For 200 or 300 years, Western reformers vs Orthodox absolutists have been fighting over the form of government for Russia. Back and forth, back and forth, but always remaining/returning to a dictatorship headed by an autocrat. No wonder the country's been so screwed up for so long. The Decembrists represented probably the earliest "What If?" of Russia becoming more representative like the West.

Ya get older, so many factoids running around in your head, memory is faulty, brain works a bit slower. The Decembrists was the clear clue, but I got them confused for a few secs with French revolutionaries. And that's the difference between a winner, and an embarrassment to friends, family, former classmates and teachers. I'm sorry I became such a disappointment.
