The Wild West Extravaganza

The Wild West Extravaganza

2 місяці тому

They say Claude Dallas was the last of the Mountain Men, a modern-day cowboy and fur trapper living life on his terms. A throwback to the Mountain Men like Jim Bridger, Jed Smith, and Kit Carson. The only thing was the authorities just wouldn’t let Dallas be. First, it was the FBI, then the Bureau of Land Management, and finally, a pair of Game Wardens out of Idaho. Dallas had sworn he’d never be arrested again, and sure enough when the smoke cleared, both Game Wardens lay dead on the ground. For over the next year, Claude Dallas was the subject of a nationwide manhunt. He would be captured and sentenced to prison, but he escaped, causing yet another manhunt - this time making it on the FBI’s top 10 most wanted. Believe it or not, Claude Dallas is still alive and free. Considered a hero to many - a living, walking, talking embodiment of the old motto, live free or die. But just how accurate are these sentiments? Is Claude Dallas truly a hero, a good man who refused to be victimized by an oppressive government, or just a criminal turned cold-blooded killer? And where is Claude Dallas now? This episode is dedicated to the memories of William Harlan Pogue, Wilson Conley Elms, and their families. #wildwest #western #truecrime

I think you pretty much nailed it. In my 53 years living in rural areas, hunting, carrying firearms, etc... I've known, and still know people that fit the description of Claude Dallas as far as the way they view themselves and their relationship with the government and the law. Honestly some of them leave me more surprised they haven't ended up in a similar way.

Josh, Your explanation of why this episode was presented the way it was is concise and appreciated. The apparent entitlement of the professionally butt-hurt is astounding. I enjoy Your style of narration and understand the time and efforts You put into these episodes. You announced joining In To History shortly after i made a annual subscription to patreon, as i am on a fixed income, i will join You at In To History when the time comes. Thanks again and Best Wishes to You and Your Family.

Josh, listened to whole episode on your podcast. Dude you nailed it! While Pogue "may" have been an unpopular jerk, emphasis on "may have been", that did not give Dallas the right to gun him and his partner down, much less, return and put bullets in their heads. You hit on on the logic in this case very clearly. Good job, and thanks!

In '87, I was a 20 year old Dept. of Wildlife survey assistant in Nevada. Our project for that season was to survey the Santa Rosa Range including the Paradise valley side. Everywhere we went in the area there was swag with "Go Claude Go" and the such. We wore NDOW uniforms so we received a lot of attitude and suddenly high prices for items. I personally walked into that bar in uniform for a coke, not knowing about the relationship with the owner and Claude as you described. Even though I am extremely oblivious, I definitely noticed the sudden 30deg drop in temp inside that bar. I feel Claude was looking to fulfill the complete cowboy fantasy culminating in a gun fight, hence his quick draw practice and threats. He had it built up in his mind, and he isn't remorseful at all about it. There is definitely some skewed thinking and odd behavior on Claude's part when you look at his entire picture. Claude is some kind of psychotic, most likely sociopath with the easy disarming nature and probably impotence with relationships. You start to check off the boxes and it starts to point to a strange mental picture, like Ted.

Josh, your channel is simply WAY COOL‼️ I lived in Missoula, Montana at the time Ol’ Claude had his lethal run-in with the Idaho game warden. There were many who openly viewed him as bonafide hero. Your oral history of Claude Dallas was superb. On a related possibility Josh, you are encouraged to tell the story of the father and son Montana mountain men Don and Dan Nichols. They were right in there with Claude’s mindset albeit kinkier in a familial way. I would love to listen to your telling of their oral history easily guessing said would be equally outstanding.

@@WildWestExtravaganza (Be sure to see 🏆 below) The trick to pronouncing Nevada like a local is to pronounce the middle "a" (Ne v"A" da) like the A in Apple. "Ne vA da". It was a subject that * was instructed on when I first became a resident, 1993. It gets pronounced with a "short a" like you do, by 99% nonresidents. It is nice when someone mentions it and/or achieved the "Local Correct Pronunciation". Not as easy when you don't live in NV. Anyways, I lived there 17 years and it still feels like "I want to go back home " I noticed it in another video, but I didn't feel it necessary to mention it.. However, if ya, "use Seen w/o a verb", or use "Me when I" is clearly obvious, ... "then I'll bust your chops". 😁 Happy Trails ... (Apple) 😉 PS: people that hurt/Abuse animals, hurt/Abuse people too. They tend to have a Cluster B Personality Disorder called "Narcissist Personality Disorder, and his description reflects an "Anger Control Trait". It is not uncommon for them to be "Efficient Hard Workers" to the (obsessive level. There are a variety of Narcissist Personality Disorder flavors, some avoid work at all cost and are never responsible, in any sense. It's a matter of those "other traits" ... I suspect he was raised in an abusive environment. Ego is at the center of their fixations. He fits the "Montana Skin Head group" Discernment rather than Judgemental .... The NPD subjects were part of my "Speciality Studies" ie: (Sociologist/Behavioralist and Historian) 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 You offered a very ⚖️ balanced commentary. I was referring to the end of the first video where there was a question of this video being finished on some kind of paid podcast where you said that one could sign up for free for 7 day's and then cancel to hear the end of this story. I may have got it mixed up, but either way, i like your stories, the fact that you try to supply the facts as much as possible, unlike some people who just try to copy other people's work providing no source's, and just trying to get views without facts. Hope you didn't take any offense, because i wasn't trying to be offensive at all, just telling you that i appreciate you providing the ending to this wild story. G-d bless.

I agree with the fact that most, in my opinion, cops are walking, talking, assholes. But yeah, dude is a psychopath! Psychopaths aren't stupid people. I'm honestly surprised that more murders weren't committed. Had I been there I would have been terrified. I certainly would have done whatever he asked of me. The killing, and torture he made these animals endure is awful. He set things up so he could use this as a reason to kill. Needed to kill for food, I call bullshit! He killed for no other reason, but the thrill of killing. At least the human killing was kept to a minimum. He's a freak!

Just subscribed. Great video ! I have/had the book "Give a Boy a Gun (and it will make him a man)". Claude Sr. supposedly said that. Olsen took this story like a bull by the horns. I first saw Dallas' mug shot in an Outdoor life magazine, keeping up with the story as much as possible in the 80's. George Nielson owned the school bus that took all Claudes stuff there. The dude was a lot like Claude Sr. (according to the book) Sr. lived in Myrtle Beach when all this went down. He had a lot to do with his sons demeanor. They would poach meat for the table. Sr. would beat Jr. and the others often, especially when they worked (owned) the milk farm. According to wiki, Jr. has a birthday coming up in a few days. My own opinion ? Oil and water mixed on that day. Claude Jr. being the hardcore outlaw, and Pogue being the hardcore "sheriff". Both being somewhat extreme. Both considered the land they were on, as their own personal stomping grounds. One the protector, the other a destroyer or taker. Something bad would happen anywhere these two met.

I was a teenager here in Idaho when Claud Dallas was on the run and captured. Of course it was all big news back then. Then life went on and I did serve in the military where I had an amazing career that took me into serving almost ten year in the US Special Forces aka the Green Beret. When I completed my service I came home to my beloved Idaho. Then here just a few years ago I'm watching the news and the big story of his release. I personally don't see him as either a hero or villain. He did kill two men, he served his time, got out and went home. Those two men never got to go home but I wasn't there and can't say that if I was in his shoes I wouldn't have done the same thing. Again, I wasn't there and he did the time the law imposed on him.

I grew up in backwoods Arkansas in the 60s and 70s and my family hunted for subsistence. Hunting, trapping and fishing was for food and most of my family had little regard for the rules and regulations of the government. It was not a safe place for government officials to throw their weight around and more than one never came back home. I was young but many of my family and friends were very much like Claude Dallas, and their attitude toward the rights of Americans.

Claude Dallas seemed like an interesting dude. Probably painted as a wannabe by some folks in the law enforcement community up there in the I-O-N territory of Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. A ranch hand, mountain man, trapper, it seemed like he earned a reputation. But it might have earned him unwanted attention by law enforcement and game wardens. Supposedly, he was a labeled a trash trapper by a sheriff in Owyhee County, Idaho like using meats or whatever he could to trap animals. One day in 1981 he was confronted by game wardens over some bobcat skins in his camp. Leading up to it, ranchers reported Claude Dallas for trapping animals on their land. Next thing you know, he supposedly shot and killed those two game wardens and Dallas and a friend of his tried to ditch the bodies. One in the nearby river because he was too big to carry and the other one in the friend's truck and buried the other game warden in a place unknown. Claude Dallas was on the run for over a year.

I read the book above him, very interesting but sad for the game wardens and their families.

Oh man this Dallas guy sounds so much like my husband, I'm dying! Not the weird incel, animal abuser, douche bag stuff, but the survivalist fantasizing about a societal collapse cuz he doesn't wanna pay taxes is on point 😂😂😂

The FBI FILES story of Claude Dallas is certainly from a one-sided pro law enforcement/fbi angle. I like that you approach it a more unbiased way of story telling.

Had a game warden try to arrest me before cause i wouldn’t give him my name. We were coming out of my friends land at night, he was posting his land while i was scouting for a spot for first day of rifle. I told the guy unless I’m hunting you can’t ask for my ID or anything especially on my friends land when we obviously weren’t hunting or fishing. He tried saying he can ask anyone who is coming out the woods for ID and that i probably tossed my bow on way out when I seen his lights. He finally laid off when i said “what is this nazi Germany? Do whatever you have to do but you ain’t getting s*** and i guarantee i win in court”. My friend being the wimp person he is told him his name right off the bat and was trying to convince me to give the guy my name. But the whole way home my friend was complaining saying “they shouldn’t be aloud to do that” 🤦🏻‍♂️. He’s the type that if gov banned semi autos he would be first in line to hand it in.

There's a UKpostsr that does trapping videos out of Idaho. I made a Claude Dallas comment a few weeks ago. UKpostsr said he'd run into Dallas at a local gas station about a year or so ago
