Climbing 700 m Above The Abyss: Stairway To Heaven In Austria | Axel On The Edge

This stairway to heaven is made of steel cables and it is the highlight of a climbing tour of the Donnerkogel, in Austria's Salzkammergut resort area. The 43-meter long sky high ladder is stretched over an abyss some 700 meters below. Climbers who've made it until the via ferrata at the summit of Donnerkogel are rewarded with a sensational view over the Alps.

Those trails (via ferrate in english) usually end at a point where you just can walk down. If it was the same way down you would have to cross people all the time. That would ruin the fun. Also climbing down is most often more difficult than up.

Well, not really. You climb, install a bolt assembly, clip in to it. Rinse and repeat until you reach the summit. You’re only ever at a maximum of a couple meters above the nearest bolt. The only time you’d hit the ground would be from a couple meters up, falling while installing the first bolt. Falling from only a couple meters is usually minor. And falling while clipped in is not dangerous as long as your belay knows what he/she is doing. Installing this bridge is more complicated but would never involved free soloing more than a couple meters off the ground.

This reminds me of a little place in the Sth. Island of New Zealand. On the West Coast called The 17 Mile. A steel rope was placed from shore out to a large rock where a few brave locals loved to fish. Tough-as-nails coal miners built it. The steel rope was over a hundred feet above the rocks and crashing waves and stretched about the same distance out to the rock. It was hand-over-hand on home made trolleys to get out to the big rock. My mother was one of maybe one or two women who ever went across. The cable has since been removed.

For those who wonder how we via ferrata enthusiasts go down from the summit , it is thru the hiker’s trail is a way to go down because if you’ll go down the same way you climbed up…you’ll only block the way for those people who are climbing up…I had several experiences before which I had to go down to make way for climbers who suddenly decided to discontinue their climb and I didn’t like it…the only way for via ferrata is to climb up that is why you should be sure that you really want to climb up to the summit and you know your own ability before you start via ferrata if you don’t want to be a hassle to your fellow climbers. As I have seen in the video, Donnerkogel Himmelsleiter is stable in compare to Felix Himmelsleiter in Wegscheid ( also in Austria ) but I highly recommend Felix Himmelsleiter to people who are into adrenaline satisfaction. I have hiked to Donnerkogel before …I supposed to climbed up there thru Himmelsteiter but I have seen there were a colony of via ferrata enthusiasts, so I decided to hike up there thru footpath but the footpath is not easy either as you still need to climb up to rocks without harness. It only looks scary if you think about it and that Donnerkogel himmelsleiter is in my bucketlist.

Being terrified of heights, seeing them on those steps had me feeling sick, but what a view.
@tilakrajprajapati5126
@tilakrajprajapati5126 3 роки тому
Hey you need to face them, to get rid of this Fear. Every time I watch this, the very first thing which comes to mind is "Falling of it", but it shouldn't, the first thing which should come to our mind is "those stunning views". There is nothing to be scared of, if you have faith in yourself. And while talking of heights, there is always some kind of Harness with us, and believe me, watching the video is more scaring then doing it by yourself. I saw same sort of Video which was shot close to my neighbourhood, I was very scared at the first sight, but when I actually went to that place, and saw other people doing it as well, most of my Fear was already Gone, I followed my fellows and did it. The very first step is the Last step, in both the senses, with the first step, you Gain confidence and if you have enough faith on your legs and Shoes, you would surely make it. You won't fear the remaining steps. In the other sense, you will get scared with that very first step and eventually, you would leave it. So in both the senses, first step is the last step. So hey, be chill, have Faith in yourself, and no height will stop you. Remember one thing, this process would take time, I started by siting on the edge of my roof and slowly, I am making it on Rocks. I am really excited for that day, when I would be fearless of all the heights.

you know, humans are anatomically built to go up instead of down. you don't think about it with stairs because there's a very flat wide surface for your entire feet to plant evenly leveled on, but try going down a steep slope vs going up. the climb down that route would be so much more dangerous and/or lengthy than the climb up.
