Cartoon bands as a concept had existed before Gorillaz. While The Archies, Josie and the Pussycats and Alvin and the Chipmunks had toyed with the medium, Gorillaz was the first time where it was more than a novelty. For the past two decades they have been pumping out weird and wonderful pop music, spanning multiple genres and featuring far reaching musical guests. Who would have thought that the guy from Blur would work with Bobby Womack, Neneh Cherry, Noel Gallagher and half of the Clash? But beyond that the group has defied all expectations and become global superstars. Smashing charts with hits like "19-2000", "Rock The House", "Feel Good Inc", "DARE", "Stylo", "On Melancholy Hill" & "Saturn Bars." As much as they are a Cartoon band, the project has evolved way beyond that. But it had to start somewhere, with their tentative first steps. This is New British Canon and this is the story of "Clint Eastwood".

I mean, everyone has to start somewhere, and that usually means starting with what's more popular and well-known and slowly moving to what's less popular but fits your particular musical niche. It's not a crime against taste to like something that a bunch of other people also happened to like. Calm down. Getting uptight ruins your ability to enjoy music, which is presumably why you listen to it in the first place. @Spamhard
@Spamhard 3 роки тому
From what I remember of my teens, it was more like "oh cool, the lead singer of Blur has created a cartoon band". They spoke pretty openly in interviews from the start about how they wanted to really lean into the absurdity of how pop bands are frequently made (basically focus tested, mass produced, consumerist type shit, moulding the band members into cookie cutter shapes to appease the masses) so they literally created their own band members. So most knew it was just Damon trying something new, at the time it was deemed more of a pet project and I don't think people really saw it anything more than a one off experimental type thing, but here we are today and they're still as big as ever.

@@noursarhan8695 No worries! Obviously that's just my own personal memory of it, I'd be interested to know if others had different experiences/commentary of it back then. I used to pretty obsessively follow them back in the day, so my personal experience on the reaction to them is based more on radio and music media's takes on them (from interviews and articles), rather than just a general population hearing them without background info.

I had Massive Attack's "Angel" as an audio tape single back in whenever year that was released, and there's a Blur remix on it that's super not very Blur-like at all and much more proto-Gorillaz sounding. So when I heard the guy behind this new Gorillaz band was the guy from Blur I wasn't super surprised since I'd heard him toy with similar ideas musically a few times before then (indeed, the video mentions "On Your Own" which is a good example... "Ambulance" is also a good example and could be my favourite Blur track honestly). I'd also got used to the idea of bands expanding genre before then, what with being both super into discovering b-sides in general (often an indicator of any band's more experimental side), and also a big fan of Radiohead (even though with them I honestly overall prefer their more early-sounding guitary stuff).

@@wipsycripsy4170 No one said rap wasn't normal or even mentioned rap. Not really sure what you're getting at. OP just asked what the reaction was to Damon creating a different sound to what we were used to, which is a perfectly reasonable question seeing as Damon, at least in the mainstream, was mostly known for pop/inidie at the time, and Gorillaz was a newer sound coming from him.

I can still very well remember seeing Clint Eastwood for the first time. It was the first time MTV released the video in holland, and I was immediately glued to the tube! It was so novel and so outstanding, especially to me, a ten year old boy drawing little comic strips and characters from morning till evening. So immediately Jamie Hewlett had this enormous influence throughout my teens: when I drew through classes, as I started doing graffiti, and when I studied at the arts academy. and not just in the style of drawing, but also in that it taught me to ever be playful, a bit rebellious and always trying to wonder at what I see visually through the day. I do not want to say that he is my idol, but I have a lot of respect for him and therefor for Damon Albarn for making this possible in my life.

Gorillaz helped me to get more into other music and help me expand my taste in other genres of music. Even with a lot of my taste being 00's and 90's pop music I still have a soft spot for it because no matter what it is I enjoy all types of music from that time, especially music from Europe as well. it's whatever really inspires me to be honest. I love this channel so much! Absolutely brilliant! One subject I think would be of interest would be the close proximity U.K punk and reggae had, with things like Don Letts djing at the Roxy, Bauhaus' clear dub inspiration and of course the 2 tone movement. For music that sounds - on the surface - so different, there are so many similarities, some of which can be seen in this video - even Murdoch has identified it! Ohh and my favourite song is Sound Check (Gravity)

The first time I ever did acid as a teenager was with my best friend, his girlfriend and her best friend. We were at my best friends house which was perfect for tripping cause well.....it was a big house in a really nice neighborhood and he had this balcony in his room that opened up on the 2nd floor which if you looked out it at night you could see the tops of the houses and trees in the neighborhood with the moon's glow(and it looked like the whole wall opened up). Anyways Gorillas had just really hit it big with Clint Eastwood and we listened to the album all night. Good memory.

Thanks for the tip, I just checked it out. Nice. I see why "Clint Eastwood" was the big single tho. it's got the Ennio Morricone-flavored hook, that five-beat cymbal crash thing (yeah my musical terminology sux), and the video introduces us to the band while "Tomorrow Comes Today" is more about London, imho. It seems to me like the two songs are in the same tempo but "Clint Eastwood" has more energy, "Tomorrow Comes Today" is more laid-back. All good.

I actually saw Gorillaz at the Philadelphia date of their first US tour. great set, never actually saw who was onstage because they played behind a screen with their silhouettes projected from behind. there was another screen above that showing cartoons. it was a frustrating show, tho. they had no opening act, just a 2 hour disjointed DJ set. by the end everyone was sitting on the floor.
