Plastics are useful. They're used to help make lifesaving medical supplies, lightweight, fuel-efficient car parts, and insulation for our homes. But nearly half of all plastic produced goes towards single-use items such as bags, straws, utensils and takeout containers. Since the 1950s, humans have produced about 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic. Every year, 8 million metric tons end up in the ocean. Globally, only 9% of plastics are recycled. As the waste piles up, there's a growing demand for alternatives.
There's a number of companies trying to develop cost-efficient and eco-friendly substitutes, from mushroom packaging to advanced fibers and plastic-free online shopping. But it may take serious legislative efforts to incentive adoption and slow the rise of the industry overall.

bang on. And the video talked a lot about needing to 'keep food fresh' and other non-sequiturs. If there were financial kick backs for local farmers, the way there are for big-agro, as well as reducing red-tape to get local produce into local super markets, there would be far less necessity for 'maintaining' freshness.

My family doesn't care. I told my roommate grandparents I'd buy the eggs. I buy cage free ones in cardboard instead of styrofoam. They're a lil more pricey but they're worth it. I told them I'll buy them since I know where to get them. Today they just fin a pack and there's another pack in the fridge. I looked today and they bought TWO styrofoam packs! I'm like why did you do that? She had excuses but none of them added up. She even admitted before that the cage free eggs taste better too. She got me so upset but you can tell she didnt care.

Especially since Japanese use more plastic than anyone else on earth, eh? My god. Over there people are double, tripple, quadruple-wrapping a single bite of food in individual wraps. And then stores are like "plastic bags - the big kind only - cost 5 yen....but we compensate for this, because it is important to always make a TON of plastic garbage. We have added extra wrapping to all our produce and meats. Also, feel free to help yourself to the extra produce bags at the front of the store to individually place each item in one by one." And heaven forbid I should try to bring a home-made treat to the office and tell people to help themselves with a serving knife and pile of plates. "You didn't give me a pre-packaged piece of nothing-meaning single rice cracker! I won't eat that!"

It has nothing to do with incentives for recycling. The problem is our recycling facilities cant extract and companies cant use hard plastics in new products because it cant be formed again. Its basically a restriction in our technology so if you want more efficient recycling with more of the plastics returning to new products then new research and investment in recycling technology is necessary, but its not being done on a big enough grand skale

More plastic went into NYC than is accounted for in recycle or landfill? My finding is that NYC is made up of two groups, the rich with massive consumption claiming ecco-superiority because they have the latest greenest product at any price, and the masses that can only plow through the cheap single use plastic lives. The government divides the massive pollution over the massive population and declare themselves green by ignoring all the production and delivery of their massive consumption.

Only reason why a plastic alternative was not available sooner: Scientists aren't smart enough to understand how real world operates. Telling corporate America that "plastic is bad for the earth" is useless. Telling corporate America "I made a plastic alternative that will save you millions of dollars!" is the only effective solution. Scientists/researchers do not know how to properly appealed to businesses, because they studied science. When you can give monetary values, you will always win. If you want investment, show the rich how you can make them money. That's it. That's really it.

if only this was so simple. to make a new plastic alternative a scientist needs funding, space for work and coworkers. A scientist does not create a new inventions out of a thin air. And where does scientist get funding for research? From government or private investors. Without their interest no experiments are possible. BTW, scientists are pretty underpaid and can not pay for their research themselves even if they want to. Also, plastic alternatives are usually more expensive, so there is that. In my mind more organic or reusable packaging feels more premium, more 'healthy'. From a marketing perspective more needs to be done to make plastic itself look dirty and less premium. People are willing to pay double the price for mushrooms packaged in a plastic container, right next to the same mushrooms that you put DIY and put into a paper bag. So if people are willing to pay double, the packaging doesn't make the item cost double the price, it's in the consumers mind that something prepackaged is worth that value.

Part of the solution could be to require all packaging be 100% recyclable. An investigative journalist in Germany tracked recycled plastic, only to discover containers made with beaded recycled plastic fell to pieces. Reusable glass containers require enormous amounts of water to sanitize them, unless you are going to use irradiation, which creates carbonized bits of food that require water to flush out. Grasshoppers flourish when it gets hot and dry. Grasshoppers are also cannibals, taking delight in eating their dead. It takes 1683 gallons of water to produce 1 lb. of beef. It makes more sense to eat grasshoppers, since 1 lb. of grasshoppers don't consume nearly so much water.

one of the challenges with groceries stores without packaging is unclear expiry date . I moved from Russia to Canada and even after living here for 11+ years still shocked at seeing NO expiry date on some food products and many beauty items. The usual answer from the CS rep is "oh don't worry, we always get new arrivals" , meaning they have a high turn-around. This does not really help to understand for how long it will be good for.

Imagine if the top 10 corporations for jar and bottled foodstuffs (KarftHeinz, Nestle etc) signed up to a standardised glass jar and bottle system. But allowed any company to use them. These could be cleaned and returned to superarkets around the world, for a price per weight (saw this in Czech Republic in '97). Then jars and bottles collected in any country, would just need to go to the nearest bottling plant for reuse. This could be Thailand, these are filled, and sent around the world. When that jar/bottle appears in France, it returns to it's supermarket and is collected by a french bottling company, to be filled and sent onwards again. A glbal use of a standard jar and bottle system, where manufacturers just reused and labelled.

Insane but excellent solution: One of Our biggest environmental problems is non reusable plastics used for food packaging If every government started banning the sales of foods sold at stores (canned foods) and started encouraging people to eat out at restaurants & take outs instead of cooking at home 🏠 the positive impact on environment, economy, health & safety would improve substantially. Solving many of humanity’s problems. The benefits: Major Reduction in plastic use Major reduction in cost of food Major reduction in food waste massive job creations massive industry growth Increase in tax revenues for governments And much more.

Plastics are predominantly and properly discarded in managed Solid Waste systems. Solid Waste systems (globally) are designed to protect the environment and convert carbon-based waste into clean renewable energy (RNG/LFGE). There are internationally recognized testing standards (ASTM D5526/D5511) and technologies to ensure plastics are designed to work in this primary managed system where consumers instinctively/properly discard plastics to avoid pollution.

This is a no-brainer. Re-use plastic as building materials! Plastic blocks, roofing tiles and roofing panels, siding, floor tiles, decking, etc... It can also be mixed with asphalt to make roads more flexible and durable and much more! It should be seen as the new multiuse, ultra abundant raw material!

Or that when you recycle paper, the staples and paper clips should be separately recycled?

I completely disagree. Shifting the onus onto the consumer to 'be green' is a trick companies have been using for decades to get away with environmentally damaging practices. Companies should be responsible for the life-cycle of their products. While going green as an individual is great, it is not realistic to expect people en-masse to do the kind of research and make the kind of life-changes necessary to tackle large-scale environmental problems. Focusing on individuals just results in annoying virtue-signaling, rather than effective change.

the problem with deposits... well, water bottles don't count so it's only soda & beer cans and bottles being returned and, hopefully, recycled. However I do think all states should have a 10 cent bottle deposit like MI. That is at least one step in curbing plastic and aluminum waste. However, if doesn't include water bottles it still falls incredibly short. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of plastics in use today like straws, bags, almost every single item at a grocery store, it's bakery, etc.
