What kills me about targeting is that 1. The offensive player can lead with the head or duck into a hit and it’s the defensive players fault?!? 2. It’s so inconsistent and without context that is just plain stupid or not enforced in the scope of what happened from both sides, like if you’re tackling low and the offensive player ducks to meet you then it’s the defenders fault again...BS!!

Problem with targeting is that, when a player gets hit once and goes airborne the entire body changes trajectories and angles. Therefore a player could have a clean shot at the chest or shoulder pads before the first bit of contact but how do you predict the future and avoid hits like that?🤷🏻‍♂️

The targeting rule is exactly why I’ve considered getting out of coaching. It makes my job as a defensive coach nearly impossible to do without my boys getting ejected and emotional. The majority of the hits in this video were how we played ball. Square up, hips down, head on the ball/shoulder pad. At this point, I’d say that probably 80% of all targeting penalties are offense initiated. There are odious hits that warrant a targeting call (like the small dicked OU hit on Clyde), but even that hardly makes up for the fact that the rule is killing the game I once loved. It’s not politics killing football; it’s awful rules like this that make the game unplayable and unenjoyable.

Offense ducks head, lowers shoulder, OMG WHAT A PLAY. Defense head up, lowers shoulder, Get em out of here. Totally balanced rulebook.
