I'm 61 now, but if I had to start over, go to college, start working, etc. ... I'd totally go this route. It's the smart at fun thing to do! I have this same van and am working on mine now to go camping with my dogs!

Looks fantastic. I am doing my own TC right now and I am taking a lot of inspiration from your build. One thing that you might want to consider is crash safety. A super simplistic metric is to assume that in a 35 MPH head on collision (equivalent to dropping your car from over 40 feet, or driving off the roof of a 4 story building) that every item in your van will be about 20 times heavier than it currently is. That means a cabinet that is 80 pounds will push forward against its mounts with 1,600 pounds of force (and don't forget to include the weight of all of the items inside the cabinets). Assuming the weight of your build is around 300 - 400 pounds with your gear, that becomes between six and eight thousand pounds of force in an accident - much of which will come crashing towards the front passengers (this is greatly simplified because of elasticity of your cabinets, but the danger is real). You should get some very strong metal brackets and attach them to the hard mounting points in the van (there are a number of them throughout the back) and secure as much of the build to that as you can. Or consider installing a bulkhead. Sheet metal screws and wood screws will not hold that kind of weight. Other than that, you have a great build and should be very proud of the work you and your friends have done.

Im I'm still taking inspiration lol. But to be fair I just spent 3900 dollars on tires, brakes, motor mounts, transaxle and steering wheel bearings gaskets lots more. Now for the build but I'm trying to decide exactly what I'll build.

If you want a bumper with a built in step, look for a mid 0 90s Chevy S-10. With a couple L brackets & 1/2 8-grade bolts, you can bolt it to the 2 rear mounting holes of the van. You will need to build end corners.

Love the wood, but when I get mine (fingers crossed), I would like a white plank wall and keep some of the fancy cedar planks for the opposite wall, or for just the kitchen area. Too much work , all that staining and upkeep for wood. It sure looks beautiful and cozy!!

Thanks! I used ceader all around just for simplicity sake and didnt end up staining them. Im sure your white planks will look super clean

where do you store your climbing gear? i have my harness and other hang-able things on hooks. but I want to make my bed more efficient, a slide-out like you've done, but not sure where I'd be able to store the crash pad? Any ideas? Right now its stowed beneath the bed.
@foodtrucksadventures36293 роки тому
yeah I'm not sure, I originally wanted to make a custom crash pad to use as a bed as well. If I have my crash pad I just store it between the bed and the desk and just move it at night when I slide out of the bed. But it gets very difficult to do that every night and having your limited living space cut in half.

Good job in such a short time however the Refectix isn't going to provide you with any insulation, it is meant to have an air gap....read the wrapper.
@foodtrucksadventures36293 роки тому
I agree, would do it differently next time
@marguskiis77112 роки тому
Use wave cardboard for insulation.
@cvisconti45686 місяців тому
@@marguskiis7711 is that actual cardboard?
