Harness the power of the sun for - whatever! Solar technology may be commonplace, but converting light into electricity is still an amazing bit of magic. Join Collin as he explores what makes solar tick and it how it relates to other common components.

The raw output a small solar panel can be used in place of a light dependent resistor (LDR). Also, hooking a small panel to an amplifier or a voltage controlled oscillator creates some interest sounds. Allows you to hear sunlight.

My solar power idea is to simulate an effective way to use solar power in a van to work off grid. My idea is to use gps and compass devices to quickly turn and tilt solar panels to point at the sun and then use a sort of max-min algorithm run by an Arduino to keep the solar panels pointed at the sun for max output. I'll do it on my desktop at a smaller scale because I don't actually have a van or much money. I can pull off a simulation on my desktop though. So far I've gotten from Adafruit a GPS Antenna, a Ultimate GPS with USB - 66 channel w/10 Hz updates, and a Triple-axis Accelerometer+Magnetometer (Compass) Board - LSM303Triple-axis Accelerometer+Magnetometer (Compass) Board - LSM303. Next I'll get a 6v solar panel and a solar charge controller and a battery. For a complete simulation I'd need some sort of inverter of course. Does Adafruit have that? I also need gears to rotate and tilt. Pretty sure Adafruit doesn't have that. Any suggestions on where I could get the gears?

It is bittersweet to see that Collin Cunningham is making videos again. They are definitely different than the videos he was making years ago. These new Adafruit videos seem watered down. They feel scripted, unlike the old videos which seemed geeky in an organic way. Nevertheless, I will continue to watch. Collin is better than no Collin.

I learned that LEDs can actually produce power here first, folks! Awesome haha That makes me wonder, do outdoor LED billboards take this into consideration? I'd imagine the back-feed of that much power being generated when the sun hits them, creating a problem.

If LEDs read light coming in - can your monitor be a camera? I believe The LCDs have LEDs behind the liquid crystal. If so aren't all TV's, watches and cell phones just cameras? Is big brother watching you?
@tekgeek6548
@tekgeek6548 8 років тому
+Larry Kaufhold (Multiple Monodot) the LED's in monitors are usually on a strip on the edge of the screen its illuminated just like you would hold up flashlight to the bottom of a mountain dew soda and it glows
@error.418
@error.418 8 років тому
+Larry Kaufhold (Multiple Monodot) Generating electricity from light is not capturing light in a reproducible manner. It's converted to electricity. It is not a camera.

Can the panel run out of electrons?
@eddiephimansone7273
@eddiephimansone7273 7 років тому
I would assume so. Solar panels do have to be replaced every once and I while from what I've read, albeit a long while. I'm guessing that's due to a lack of negative charge.
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 7 років тому
Not under any normal conditions. Electricity is the flow of electrons from the side with excess to the side lacking electrons, so they always stay in the loop, same thing in PV cells electrons get dislodged on the N side and then want to go back to the P side. And the reason PV panels degrade over time is just gradual combination of defects, the glass starts to fracture, glues start to fog, moisture and oxidation starts to creep in, and even the molecular structure itself starts to very slowly break since it gets bombarded with photons for so very long. But we are talking 30% power loss in 30 years(if it was made properly), that means you can still go on using them they just put out less power, and once completely done the silicone can simply get melted and used in the next PV panel.
@Calvinatorzcraft
@Calvinatorzcraft 7 років тому
+MsSomeonenew Huh. Neat.
@svetovid5897
@svetovid5897 7 років тому
lol, where exactly do you think those electrons are going?
@radioactivated

Every electron in that circuit has to stay in the circuit, and believe me, it's jam-packed with electrons. It's not like the electrons are leaking to the outside world.
