Most male comedians of a certain age eventually go down this route. They're not actually funny in the main, because they can't conceive of a form of humour that doesn't punch down. They were probably bullies in school with a lot of Crabbe and Goyle friends. Cruelty always gets a laugh from the dull witted, and the moment they find out they aren't funny, they launch into exactly the rant Joel's depicting. And then their dull witted fans leap in to defend them because they have even less imagination.
