If you already know the argument they are going to put forth there is no reason for a long drawn out explanation. Communism is inherently evil in all its forms and the people who practice it are as well even if the people don't know it. I find evil way too simplistic, the Problems with utopias (like the one Marx imagined) lies in the question of what one does if the people behave like humans and not like the philosophies tell them too. With incentives mostly ruled out by idealistic systems such as fascism and communism, repression is the only thing left. And if one uses a lot of repression one becomes a tyranny. Also while the ideas of communism may work for a small commune, on a large scale they often stop working entirely. For us the question still remains, what do we do with goals and markets where the free market capitalism fails? As Adam Smith himself says if the market deviates to far from a perfect market or if externalities are not factored in markets fail. That is why firefighting is even in the most capitalist systems nationalized or based on volunteer community service. I personally like the Scandinavian systems, state insurances to cover basic human needs (less desperate people create less problems), free capitalist markets where possible and incentives + state interventions where not. All with very low repression (10% of incarceration rate of Cuba or the US) and a large focus on transparency to combat any corruption. Also as with Marx saying that workers should own the means of production, Norway has a large State Fund to ensure sustainable prosperity for generations to come.

There should be a theory which makes a philosophy valuable or redeemable. Marx does not have this in all his writing and this is no different than Hitler. This is not common among contemporaries and topical colleagues of Marx's. Adam Smith, Dan Ricardo, Carl Menger, JS Mill, Pigou, Walras, Keynes and dozens of others may be attributed some value. Your claim that some observation of Marx's about hierarchy places him among contributors to philosophy or economics or political science is not how that works. Specifically, as you describe it, this is not a theory or philosophy. Marx attempts demagogy of envy between parties low on a hierarchy and those atop it.

I don’t think anyone who reads that book could possibly defend communism. The scary thing about Vasili though is you can sense in his writing that despite it all - despite what he writes and the undertone. He’s still a communist at heart. He still believes in the doctrines. Reading it changed my life. Before I was left leaning. Tolerant of the theses of equality and social justice that were espoused by my more radical fellows on the left. I now know that as Yoone said it is a fundamentally dangerous and horrifying project which attempts to dehumanise the human individual. And that murderous totalitarianism is a necessary part of it. Life and Fate helped me break away from my intellectual slumber and passive tolerance of radical left-wing thought and activism.

Here is a shocking and controversial idea: depending on who you are and what circumstances you're in, you might want to act differently to achieve the same general goal. There is no good reason I can think of that would make this statement less true for polities than it is for individuals. If you're a small polity, situated on a major trade node, maybe the way to be successful is not the same as it might be for a large polity in the middle of Eurasia... If your average citizen is a subsistence farmer maybe don't apply policies that seem to work in Canada, and vice versa?

The failed theory of Communism does not deserve the honor of being treated as though its theoretical underpinning is the actual Communism that exists. Every other form of government is illustrated by actual real-world examples as they have existed within homo sapiens, and it is absurd special pleasing to treat Communism differently than that. (No, Lenin did not practice this magical non-murderous Communism either.) The reason Communism has existed within nation- states is because Communists haven't managed to forcibly conquer, or convince, the entire world (and I'm not sure they've ever convinced anyone without a troop deployment). Just like any other state-backed ideology, Communism held control within certain territories and not others. Other countries could be annoyingly persistent in not effecting bloodbath revolutions on their own, so the power of a nation-state backed force was more or less required.
