In order to understand the mindset, you have to understand the conditions Russian live in. Moscow and St. Petersburg aren't the norm. In rural Russia, they still take a dumb in sheds, live with poor heating, get completely taken advantage of at the jobs they Do, essentially working for pennies. Education is very poor. They don't speak any other languages, therefore are isolated with Russian propaganda. Even if they don't follow it religiously (many don't, because they are too busy hustling, trying to survive), the lack of exposure to other sources, makes them believe and fall for the propaganda. Their entire lives are set up to be like this and not have any concept of freedom or what the world outside really looks like.
