A trick with the frog tape for absolutely perfect lines every time is to use a damp sponge or rag to wet the edge of the tape after you apply it to the surface. This pre-activates the paint block tech and seals the edge of the tape prior to applying paint.
@brentmar2635

awesome tip! Once you paint, do you remove the tape immediately or wait until the paint dries?

@@brentmar2635 usually while it's still wet. If you wait until it dries, pull the tape off at a hard angle instead of straight and upwards. It helps prevent the paint from peeling.

If you need that perfect line, use your blue tape or frog tape, then caulk a thin beed over the edge of the tape, smooth off the caulk with a wet finger, paint your line, then pull your tape while the paint and caulk are still wet. Perfect lines on any surface!

Run a damp cloth over fresh tape, let it dry a couple mins, and then put the paint over it. You don't have to use a lot of pressure to rub the tape down. The water activates the adhesive. It works like a charm on heavily textured walls. I like 3m regular blue or frog tape for intricate designs.

PRO Tip: if you paint the edge of the tape, any tape, with the color UNDER the tape, let it dry, and paint the intended color. This allows the same color to bleed under the tape on textured walls. When the new color is applied, that gap has already been filled so the new color cannot bleed through. I'm almost ashamed to say how much I've made with such a simple cheat.
@yougetagoldstar
@yougetagoldstar 8 місяців тому
Can you explain that a different way? I cant picture that in my mind. (Not experienced with any dynamic painting techniques. Most ive ever done is paint a color on the wall with a roller and brush.)
@kpttimes9043
@kpttimes9043 8 місяців тому
Ok. You've painted the wall blue, for example, and you want to paint a gold stripe in the middle. Secure the tape at the lower edge of the stripe you want and another at the upper edge. Paint the wall and overlap into the tape BLUE where you intend to be gold. Let the blue dry, then paint the space between the two strips of paint gold. Let dry and remove the tape. The blue paint added between the tape strips will have 'bleed' under the tape filling the tape under the tape edge. When you paint it gold, there is no room for it to sneak under the tape (tape will always lie to you). The clear silicon trick works too, however, it does leave a more noticeable lip on the wall.

@@lukaskliment9646 I think what he is saying is paint the wall. Add tape to paint the NEW COLOR, but paint the "tape edges" with the ORIGINAL COLOR first so that it seals the tape edge. Let it all dry. Then paint the NEXT COLOR. Pull tape. Does that help?

Hi Jeff, The *real* bullet-proof way to get a crisp edge is to start off, not with gold, but with BLUE at 2:21 over the tapes. When the blue is dry, *then* apply the gold over the blue. All the bleed-through will be blue, ergo invisible. the bleedyness of the tape won't matter _at all_ .

@@EndoExcision The intermediate coat is so thin, that it doesn't take a lot of time to dry. The goal is not to get a great coat - just to fill al the bleed-cracks. You can get by by only brushing along the edge of the tape. The final finish is can be attributed to the gold overcoat, not the blue intermediate. Perfectly lazy every time ;) . This "real painter" has used 3M tape for years. The time spent taping resulted in faster painting time with no or minimal cutting in, and better surface texture, being able to roll right up to the tape. Super sharp lines and no possibility of roller splatter on the baseboards.

Yeah my wife and I painted her mothers whole house and we used both frog and blue tape. I like working with the frog tape more just easier to tear and work with. But we had bleeding underneath as the texture of the wall was an issue so no matter which tape we used good to know would have had same problem. Good to know for future reference to set the edge with a damp cloth from some of the comments so interested to try that next time I have to paint

Most homes in the US have pretextured walls so it is impossible to have perfectly smooth walls. The only two options are to try a damp sponge over the tape once it is on the wall, or paint the base color over the tape so the bleed is the same color as under the tape.

Short: Learn to not need tape. Use cheap tape properly, or use Frog Tape green properly for textured surfaces. Long: 0:22 Intro to the tapes. e.g. Frog tape, Green good for 21 days and Yellow 60 days. 1:00 Washy, up to 60 days 1:30 Scotch Delicate, Sharp-lines and Regular Blue 2:15 Cheapo regular yellow 2:30 Paint time... 2:50 Test clean edge peeling off Paint wet. No clear winner, all bleed, cause is texture and not pressing tape firmly. 4:10 Repeat Test... But pressed tape firmly. Winner: Frog Tape, but close. Lesson is ensure taped firmly pressed before painting. 5:45 Test clean edge peeling off after paint dries. Winner: All but regular yellow and blue. 7:45 TIP: Air seal tapes so adhesive doesn't dry/cure out. 8:20 Test tearing tape place on top of recently dried paint. Winner: Scotch Delicate 10:00 Test clean edge peeling barely pressed tape after paint dried. Winner: Meh, all fail because not pressed firmly. 10:25 Conclusion: Cheap tape works if correctly applied, smooth wall helps. IF you're the kind of person that needs tape, then Green Frog Tape is good for textured.

Great test. My #1 use for painters tape is to keep roller splashes/spray off of freshly painted surfaces (at least a couple days dried) either directly applied or used to hold plastic sheets. I want it to adhere, but not so much that it damages the fresh paint. It appears that most will work just fine and no need to spend a ton of money. I do not trust basic masking tape, as there are so many variants and levels of quality. I'll stick to basic "blue".

I've heard many recommend a damp sponge. They say it softens the paper, activates the glue, and makes it all stick to rougher texture. Then you just wait a few minutes for the water to dry before painting. They say it works with regular blue painters tape as well. This is what I would test. I don't like spending time taping unless required. It's counterintuitive to profitability.

For people trying to get ultra crisp lines. I've seen videos before where they put the tape on, then paint the wall with the same color that's underneath the tape. Let it dry then go over with your accent color. That way any bleed through you get is the same color as underneath Don't know how that would go but I've seen several people do it

Terrific video. This is one of those iconic UKposts videos that should be around forever. I think I can see the marketing strategy of these tapes. It's escalation. "Maybe if you just spend more money on 'better' tape...." When what you really need to do is burnish down the edges of the tape you have. I asked an artist who had really crisp razor sharp lines on some of his paintings how he did it. The top paint that was cut so cleanly was also really thick, like 5 -10mm (nothing you'd ever do in a house). He said it was just masking tape, but burnished down. Of course he might've learned a trick or two that he didn't want to share. (One way of looking at this might be: three stages of skill. I have no clue, hopefully I'm learning and inventing, the second, 'Wow this works great, I'd better keep it a secret,' And the third stage, after you've blurted out the Big Secret to a competitor....and they didn't suddenly catch up to you, take away all your business, etc... help anyone we can ) My friend was an experienced, middle aged artist, who had no limit to his creativity, so I think he would've just told me. I've never felt I've had much success with masking tape. Or like my brother used to say, "Some guys can cut a line, some can't. Tape'll just slow you down." Burnishing. This applies to everything from hard metals, all the way to clay and probably food prep. You can as you did use your finger tips. There are plastic burnishing tools, Delrin would be a good slippery material. Cheap plastic cutting boards are what I'd always use. There's also the fat tongue depressors. I've sanded the round edge, and for tight areas I've cut a long diagonal and sharpened it. I guess for burnishing inside corners.

There's a technique I learned where you can take some acrylic painter's caulk, squeeze a bunch of it in a little dish with some water to thin it into a sort of yogurt-like consistency, and go over a well-pressed tape's edges with that thinned-out caulk. Use your finger to just smear it along the edge, or perhaps a little brush. It will be too thick to bleed through the tape. Wait a few min for it to dry out and it will be an undercoat before the paint color you want to mask. You can probably use the cheapest masking tape, but I really like THIN precision tape... the Shurtape company used to make a precision painter's tape but they got acquired by the German giant Henkel and discontinued it in favor of the much more expensive Frogtape brand they had recently acquired at the time.

You could also try the wet sponge or cloth to see if that works or makes a difference without having to press really hard. You could also do the double paint, but leave it on a whole day to see how much damage the tape causes on fresh paint. Some people paint and come back the next day to pull tape. See, that is a whole new video. 😊 I love your channel! I watch most of your videos as soon as they come out.

The frog tape isn't activated by "the paints acrylic's" but the water in the latex and is the reason why it is shipped and stored in the plastic containers....the edge lock technology activates by contact with water and is only on the edges of the tape. The humidity of the air is enough to activate it and therefore must be stored in airtight way. The purple 3m you tested has paint lock technology all throughout the adhesive and therefore the edges of the tape roll won't just swell up if left loose in your truck or your tool bag; the whole roll would expand or contract as one depending on ambient conditions. Any tape applied properly should peel clean while the paint is still wet, it really just comes down to application error at that point. The 60 day vs 14 day removal times is because pros use this stuff too. In modern construction it isn't uncommon to leave tapes on inbetween a first coat and final coat and have a 1-2 month gap between the applications of those coats. The same way finish carpentry has a stage one and stage two or final applies to wall paint as well; why spend the time and money applying tape twice when it will last for 60 days? Edit: Yellow frog tape I have only used twice. Its a good product for when you've put on multiple coats...rushing with a fan.. and have to do a color transition that requires multiple coats while also maintaining a crisp line. You were pretty aggressive when you tore off the fresh tape on top one coat of fresh paint...but I promise you if you had 3 coats of fresh paint under that test that the only tape cleanly removed would be the yellow frog. It also very thin, hard to apply straight, and doesn't stick worth a damn to anything....so its a complete waste of time and money to even try unless you have a very niche application.

If you need a sharp line on a textured wall, yeah work it on and then cover the edge with paintable silicon latex and it works like a charm and will leave a sharp line.

Either paint under tape line with color of top coat or run a VERY thin coat of paintable caulk over tape edge. Let dry, paint and remove when not wet but not dry at a 90 degree angle as you pull the tape. Tape cuts the micro thin caulk.

great work jeff. what happens when your wall is not flat and is like pineapple skin skin coat. which people use to cover bad plaster work and then not have to do a proper plaster finish. I have tried to do stripes with that paint type and it is not fun. would love to know any tips you have. am happy to add some photos of the works if required, for understanding the texture of the paint.

My go to painters tape has been Green Frog tape applied with a damp cloth to activate the bond. I’ve used a lot of different types and brands over the years with multiple paint types. When applied properly and usually fairly quick it has protected base boards, created sharp lines, used on art projects on canvas etc. I admit I didn’t read the package about the damp cloth the first time I tried it and suffered from my mistake. Green Frog tape also has multiple widths and the type I the case has given me the best outcome. Worth the money in my opinion and less hassle of having to go back and fix bleeds or drips later.

Cantech (brand name) had an orange tape cheaper than frog tape and it was doing about the same job... but my local store doesn't sell it anymore. Otherwise I will go with the Scotch Blue Safe-Release tape. Frog tape is probably the best but it’s over priced imo. Thank you for this test, i’ll remember to do a surface prep before applying tape.

Video Comment: Consider using manual focus so focus doesn't jump between wall and Jeff. Or, better, if you are using a real lens, shoot at a higher f stop, such as f8 or f11, you will need more light, but, it will keep both the wall and Jeff in better focus - the term is "depth of field" if you want to learn more. Your videos are great - just being critical, if I know you guys, you were pissed as to the focus going out when you were attempting to show the "sharp" lines on the wall. - Just my 2 cents - Keep up the awesome work.

Sometimes when painting only the ceiling and you have to mask the wall you want to use scotch delicate or yellow frogtape otherwise you risk peeling the old wall paint especially with yellow or green scotch.

A quick trick to get clean lines. Apply a thin bead of painters caulking (clear or white) along the edge of the tape your painting. Then wipe off all the excess caulking. Then while caulking and paint is still wet pull the tape you will get sharp lines even on mildly bumpy surfaces.

This is exactly what I do, but I thin the caulk out with some rubbing alcohol and apply with a small brush. It thins it out enough that you can still pull the tape when the paint is dry.

I assume these are Canadian prices. In the US the yellow and green frog tapes usually cost the same. You can also get bulk discounts. With Frog tape I found it best to wet first and then run a 5-in1 tool over it.

I paint often for a facility that has over 100 residential units and several large office complexes; I get excellent clean lines with zero bleed when I pre-moisten the edge of the frog tape (green and blue) with a damp rag or sponge and let it sit for a few minutes before applying paint. The water moisture activates the gel reaction that forms a seal. Just don't leave a damp rag or sponge sitting on a roll of frog tape; you'll have a slimy roll within minutes.

What about the paint over the tape with the under color paint then use the new top color? That way the seepage is the color of the color you are protecting and the top color has a perfect. 😉👍

I was painting an Aquarium Stand, entire Stand was Painted with Gloss White Rustoleum Topside Paint, an oil based paint. Let it dry for a Week. Taped off the Stand with Green Frog Tape. So I could paint the outside with Krylon Satin Black. Not only did it bleed, put it took the Topside paint off in places. Was really disappointed in the results. Went over the edges with the Topside to correct, no tape used.

We had to buy the frog yellow tape (less glue) because every other tape would rip off decades of old paint off the wall because owners like 40 years ago didn't properly adhere a layer and the tape would pull off about 5 paint layers.

Painter here. I prefer Frog tape, the container is a good idea because it protects the edges from dents and nicks when it's in the tools bag plus keeps the moisture and dust off, which is important for a clean line, but doesn't work the same with oil base paints. You can rub a damp rag over the edges of the tape after it is applied to get a better seal and sharper line. It's not the adhesive that makes it special, it's what's on the edge of the tape. Read the container. Try comparing automotive tape. Blue line doesn't like to stick to it's self. Any overlapping parts lift off with no mechanical influence. Turn your back and it's falling off. Frustrating garbage.

I just finished painting two rooms and three pieces of furniture in my house just hours ago and I happened to see this video. Fan of the channel! I think the demonstration is poor example of how most people us painters tape. In the rooms I was painting I taped off stucco ceiling and trim, I used frog tape, ran out and used basic green painters tape. The frog tape out preformed the painters tape so much so that I don't think I will use basic painters tape again. In the past I have used painters tape and had issues with it bonding with dusty stucco, the frog tape stuck instantly. The painters tape was constantly tearing, frog tape never ripped. I could secure the frog tape to a small section of the wall and run the tape 10 -12 feet without it breaking, something I couldn't do without the painters tape. If I am spending $150-$200 on paint, I might as well spend an extra $5 on a superior product. Just my 2 cents.

For clean lines guaranteed. Paint the under coat color over the tape first...any bleed through will blend with the wall color and seal the tape for the new color. Once dry...paint with the new color....perfect every time doesn't matter texter at all

Did a job forca customer that wanted a whole wall painted as the american flag. First i measured the height of the wall them divided by 14 ( the number of stripes) to give me the width of each stripe. Then i painted the whole wall bright white, let it dry, came back the next day and used blue tape and caulk to make the red stripes. The after that was all dry used tape and caulk to make the blue square. Used spray texture and a stencil for the stars.

Put the tape on the wall. Next, paint over the tape first with a light coat of the underlying color (blue) then let it dry. This will fill in the bleed edge gaps with blue. Then paint over it in yellow. You’ll have your clean edge.

This is the correct answer. We call it double cutting, some call it laser cutting. The second application of paint over the taped edge runs under any gaps in the tape and seals with the original color. Let dry then paint with the alternate color.

When painting the base color can you just paint near the tape? Or the whole wall? If just near the tape I'm concerned it will be noticeable after final color.
@n8germ
@n8germ 8 місяців тому
@@joemachine4714 Paint past where you want the original color to stop. Let it dry. Tape where you want the color to change then paint lightly onto the tape on the side where you want the color to change making sure you get that same base color to get under any gaps the tape leaves because of texture. That will create a seal so the next color wont get under those gaps. After that paint has dried paint your next color onto the tape and remaining wall. I pull the tape while its still wet.

This feeds into my "Member's" question regarding smoothing out a textured wall. (Skim coating.) It seems to me most wall treatments look way better on smooth walls. Logical for the same reason here - you are applying to a surface that will not alter the applied finish. Similar to wall paper application it starts with "flat". There are some finishes that are more forgiving if the surface mimics nature. For example a suede finish on a low texture surface looks organic - on a knockdown/orange peel it looks hideous. Upping your room game is all about the detail work. The more time you put into craftsmanship the more satisfying it is.

I only use frog tape. It has been the most consistent for me over the years. I was trying to use the blue stuff, but ive had the worst time getting it to stick to textured walls in the past couple years. So i gave up on the 3M/Scotch branded crap and jist buy the green tape. Always does the job for me, and it's always on the shelf.

I am wondering if the paint film has a textured knap to it ( not perfectly smooth, and the tape is riding a bit over the top of this knap allowing. This would cause the tape to not be perfectly bonded to all surfaces, allowing for very small places for the tape to bleed under. Try this test over a piece of glass!!!! Bob S

I painted the walls of my 100 year old, skim-coated and primed plaster walls with BM and the ceiling with SW - both very high quality paints. I waited at least 2 days and then masked both to paint the crown molding with regular masking tape. Pulled off a significant amount of paint on both wall and ceiling. After repainting those areas, I waited a few days and then I switched to yellow frog tape. I cut the crown as close to the tape as I could on the first coat. After it dried, I used the "caulk trick" and rubbed some caulk along the edges. Then I put on the second coat all the way to and on the yellow frog tape. I pulled it off immediately while the paint was wet. Worked perfectly - no bleed, no damage, no hassle. One roll is more than enough for a room. A few extra dollars was a no-brainer for me.
