Norm MacDonald practically single handedly willed the canadian screen award into being referred to as The Candy
@cleverusername9369

American here, I always assumed Candy was just an abbreviated form of Canada or Canadian! I was vaguely aware that the award was called a Candy, it never occurred to me that it would be "named" after John Candy, as well it should be! A national treasure. Canada never ceases to amaze 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇨🇦

I worked with Johns friend Rick Bennett who had been petitioning the Canadian Screen Awards to have the award nicknamed The Candy but they refused because they wanted to establish the award on its own merit. Norm was able to publicly override it during the live broadcast and make the name stick

When I was growing up I loved John Candy. He made a movie in the 80s called “Summer Rental” and my uncle and cousins bumped into Mr Candy while they were on vacation. I don’t remember their impression of him but I’ll never forget the photographs they shared, smiling and eating lunch with him on the beach. He really seemed to have the biggest heart, and I’ve always been grateful to hear that he really was as warm and generous as he seemed.

@@calisongbird , as a young neurodivergent child (definitely ADHD, maybe autism), I craved attention from other people but didn't always know the best way to get it. I went through a phase of casually taking objects from people while talking to them. If they were holding something (e.g., paper, phone, water bottle), I would slowly take it from them and hold it, ideally without breaking the conversation. That didn't really work. Esoteric animal trivia was also not well received. I'm not saying that Tom Hanks' rapper son is neurodivergent or disabled like me, but it does seem like the privileges he has enjoyed from his dad (e.g., fame, wealth, world travel) have sheltered him to the point that he is out of touch with reality. He desperately wants attention but has no idea what is entertaining to the average person. The fake Jamaican accent and bad rapping are his version of taking a water bottle out of someone's hand or sharing too many weird animal facts.

I hope that some of Martin Shorts audio tapes are included in the documentary. A treasure trove of the parties held by the cast of SCTV and The Second City (Toronto). The parties were called The Services. I think that was the name. Often, when driving to downtown Toronto for work, I would see JC at his house on Avenue Road (look it up, yes it is the name of the street) on the front veranda with his feet up on the railing and smoking a cigar. I had seen hundreds of celebrities pass through club but I'll never forget seeing Candy and Gretzky together. Candy as well as Gretzky frequented the club on many separate occasions. One time Candy got up on stage and sang with a band. Just whooping it up with the crowd and being his jovial self. I can't believe he was only in his mid thirties or late thirties at that time. The passing of John Candy and untimely demise of Phil Hartman were two of the greats that were a gut punch to me. Too soon.

My earliest memory of John Candy was on SCTV..... Mrs. Falbo's Tiny Town. The Letter P. John was Mrs. Falbo's side kick, and they visited a Prison. When they sang Folsom Prison Blues to the inmates I was hooked !!! You can see it here on You Tube. TOO FUNNY.

John Candy was just…amazing! He is such a huge part of my childhood. Side note: he needs more props for Wagons East. Such a great, under appreciated movie.

John Candy inspired me to go into food repair. Now I own over 400 food repair shops throughout the heartland specializing multiple repairs from cakes to spare ribs and now restaurant foods even total rebuilds of KFC famous bowls

I miss John Candy :( I'm glad his legacy lives on, he was on among my favourite actors, next to Tom Hanks and Robin Williams.

John Candy is one of those celebrities that people love for being one of the nicest, regular guys out there, much like the same way Tom Hanks is loved for being a nice celebrity. Loved them together in Splash and wonder what it was like between them on the set.

@@HueyRocks23 "Volunteers" was a terrible script that some Hanks and Candy (mostly Candy) made into a decent popcorn movie. 🍿

I always loved Roger Ebert's suggestion - that the movie would have been radically better had they switched roles. I'd have LOVED to have seen that movie.

The SCTV long form skit "The Last Polka", a music mockumentary about the polka playing The Schmenge brothers, is available on UKposts. Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and of course John Candy are all amazing.

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, I now think of John Candy every Halloween, which was his birthday. 2020 would have been his 70th and Ryan made a lovely compilation of John Candy’s funniest movie moments to the tune of “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young. You can find it on Ryan’s UKposts channel with the title “Happy Candy Day”. I just rewatched it yesterday.

My aunt’s birthday, too. She would have been 83 yesterday. #fuckcancer She always had this bemused smirk, and could put dad in his place with one word. 😂

I just pulled that SCTV Sketch. Funny stuff, period breaking! :) I had Black and White TV's and was lucky enough to have parents to let me stay up late enough to watch Johnny Carson! I have slapped the side of a TV or two to get reception. Adjusted some rabbit ear anttenas! :)

Candy's Johnny LaRue still cracks me up. His impressions of Orson Welles is spot on. Even though I knew who Orson Welles was when I was younger, I didn't know he was that difficult. So when those Orson Welles clips hit the internet back in the day, I thought of John Candy

It's funny they went to Martin Short, I mean he really came up with Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty, Short was absolutely in there, but he came in later, didn't he?

that makes sense about making the Canadian films occasionally .. I found a VHS movie called Party Time I think its got the most 80’s cover ever l was like why have I never heard of this so I bought it ( I still have a VHS player , I know ) it’s horrible btw but doesn’t diminish in a bit the laughs John brought me as a child and teen and the conan story of yellow belly I have gotten like 6 laugh bursts out of it already and will probably get 6 more over the next week .. I’m going to watch some SCTV I forgot about it I was of the Kids in the Hall and Conan era
