“more offensive”? I don’t think Conan tries to be offensive, and most people love him. I don’t get this idea that being “offensive” is a virtue. Offensive to whom? Conan spelled out his message: “Don’t be cynical. It’s my least favorite quality… if you work hard and be kind, amazing things will happen.” I don’t think someone whose aim is to be kind is going to try to be offensive to people.

I know fans already know this but, for the 10%, back when NBC cut his show for Leno, his staff was basically laid off. Conan then for almost a year, paid his staff out of his own pocket, and then paid the staff that came with him to LA, their moving expenses, and living expenses until the show started and they're back on TBS payroll. This alone says a lot about Conan's character and relationship with his staff. Fallon, Kimmel, etc, may just be themselves and their staff, but Conan and his people are one. Thank you, Coco.

The writer's strike era of Conan was likely the best late night television ever. Dude is way funnier off the cuff than he is scripted. Jay Leno at that same time in every joke, was implying people were drunkards, drug users, sexually promiscuous, or made jokes/innuendo about female anatomy. While Jay proved his limited comedic abilities, Conan was proving his genius and redefining what late night television could be. It's kinda ironic that a guy riding a zipline through his audience night after night is more mature than the guy who cheated him out of a job, but that's the reality of things. I'd love to see a documentary on Conan and his handling of the writer's strike, a montage segment of Leno saying the same punchlines for different set ups would be hilarious in this context.
@gallery75966 місяців тому
RE: "...a guy riding a zipline through his audience night after night is more mature than *the guy who cheated him out of a job,"* But didn't Conan greenlight an *NBC* proposal that was deciding Jay's retirement date so Conan could have his job?
@kellierafferty61204 місяці тому
Because Jay said on his own show "See ya in five years" and said on camera Conan would be getting the show...look it up. It has all been well documented on film and in books.
@gallery75964 місяці тому
However, it's well documented in Bill Carter's excellent book "The War For Late Night: When Leno Went Early & Television Went Insane"" that Jay's "see ya in 5 years" comment was the result of *NBC's* prodding. Jay knew nothing of Conan's deal with the network until after it was made, and since his only choices were "you can congratulate Conan and leave in 2009" or "you can complain, but you'll still leave in 2009," Jay graciously chose the former- never imagining that 5 years later the network would be begging Jay to stay.

I think the most interesting thing to me is that this Harvard grad who wrote for one of the most famous sitcoms in the history of television somehow has never lost his sort of “man of the people” worldview and style. Like I think it was Paul Simon who said the more famous you get, the harder it is to write songs people can relate to, since you’ve become more disconnected from the masses. But somehow, with everything that should distance him from his audience and even his staff, he seems to just…get it, I guess. He’s the one in a million celebrity who really keeps it real and stays true to who they are. And I think that’s really inspiring.
@daisyo.6666Місяць тому
If you listen to his podcast he seems to avoid surrounding himself with yes people. He prefers genuine people who will tell him the truth. That certainly helps. A lot of people prefer to surround themselves with servants who will do as they say, so their views get very distorted.

Conan, is the last of the breed of hosts who listen and actually joke around with their guests, instead of just laughing like a moron at every turn... Love ya Conan, you'll be surely missed.

Writers Strike Conan was peak Conan and no one can convince me otherwise

The writers strike was one of the best things to happen to Conans show. These were my favorite episodes

Conan in many ways is the best of American TV. Classically funny and beloved and somehow completely self aware while having funny.

While other talk show hosts need a structured preplanned format to entertain the audience, Conan thrives in the improv, random, and wacky comedy. He is at his best when doing things loosely and deviating from the plan. Mean while, other's can do anything without that blue card and teleprompter.

The rockets in the elevator: I laughed to myself “that is so stupid”, then he said the same thing. Truly a man of the people.

I first watched Conan’s clips of his interactions with animals and instantly fell in love with his comedy and charm. He’s just so goofy and genuine, I love how little it takes for him to make someone laugh. His curiosity and care for the animals was so refreshing when it seemed every other host was scared or unsure about them, Conan would hold it and not freak out when he learns it’s dangerous, always staying relatively calm. These clips were so chaotic but just a taste to his masterful comedy, truly a legend and I admire the man a whole lot. Team Coco forever!

He is the best talk show host ever in history hands down!!!

i love how conan has silly/absurd sketches and relatively serious interviews then on the other end of the spectrum craig ferguson has not many sketches but really absurd interviews and both of them are the best it goes to show that being a good late night host is so much about being unique, no matter in what part of the show you're doing that.

Writer’s Strike Conan was some of his best material especially his “beef” with Colbert and Stewart over credit for Mike Huckabee winning the Iowa Caucus.

Not only is Conan a comedy genius on top of his 'book smarts' as a Harvard guy, but he always gave props and respect to the ones that came before him, and speaking highly of David Letterman, and always referring himself to the "student" of the Late Night shows, and that's what I love him the most about. Best Late Night host to learn humility from. Not a comparison, but Craig Ferguson was also great, and I also watched Letterman growing up. Gained respect and started watching Kimmel after he defended Conan and ripped Leno, but Conan's improv ability and creating comedy out from awkward situations and his banters with regular people even from his days in Late Night is what separates him from others.

I met Conan for the first time a few days before Christmas in 2018. He was the nicest man ever when my camera wouldn't work correctly. However, I turned around to thank him for the Springfield Monorail and he was gone. Conan is a time-traveler.

Because he still acts like a kid. Not a gamer kid that’s the norm in this generation but still a kid in every other way. All other hosts follow the same old variety or political satire show but he’s the only one who is delightfully crazy enough to truly mix it up. Love Conan! 😄

All I can say is some of the best ERA of Conan was when I was working a second shift job and I would come home every night watch the last little bit of Jay whatever his name is and then get something to eat and watch a fresh show of Conan O'Brien and I just remember how good and how these were like the golden years between 04 to 07 but I'm going to clear this up now for everybody. Conan O'Brien has never been bad at anything he's ever done. The one thing I take away from him is that he's relatable and very humble and super kind and I think that is something that we could all take away from this legend. Thanks Conan for the laughs and I hope that you keep rocking out on HBO Max here very soon......333
